Attention, ACTIV-Lers! PeaceNet still has an electronic network
link to the Soviet Union. The "northwest.news" service from
Leningrad has managed to post two bulletins on the coup d'etat.
One of them follows. Other links have been cut, however. I
don't know how long this service will be able to continue, but
will post copies to you as long as it does.

Another good reason to subscribe to PeaceNet, in my humble opinion.

The unanimous support for the Eltzin-Sylaev-Hasbulatov
Statement was decided at having just completed joint meeting of
Leningrad city and Region councils, where district councils of
Soviet, members of Municipal Council, deputies of the Russian
republic were taking part.
The members of Lensoviet have called on to carry out the
laws of the legal government and immediately to start an
universal termless strike.
Near the Lensoviet building, there was organized a
constantly acting meeting at which the amount of people is
increasing.
At 2 p.m. the members left for big industrial plants to
initiate the strike immediately.
Leningrad TV is out of work on command from Moscow.
Independent broadcasting systems do not work under request
by KGB agents for the preventive inspection.
All fax-machines and computers at publishing houses of
democratic newspapers "Smena" and "Nevskoye Vremya" were burnt by
strong electric impulses.
During the meeting at Lensoviet, it was announced about
the information sent by Yarov, who has been included in the
Committee On The Emergency situation and from Sobchak /the
mayor/.
Yarov has called on the summon Lensoviet's emergency session
on August 20, at 10 p.m. Sobchak has suggested to summon the
Lensoviet session at 4 p.m. on August 19. The presidium of
Lensoviet has suggested these two suggestions.
The chief of the Leningrad police has left for the Pulkovo
airport to grant safe driving the mayor to Lensoviet. On request
by Lensoviet chairman Beliayev, the Leningrad TV center has been
guarded by the police.
The Leningrad international phone station has refused to
book international calls. Trunks booked beforehand were abolished
by operators.
Under unchecked information, financial operations have not
undergo at a local bank of branch. Since early this morning OMON
employees were presenting during bank operations.
