Tom, what sort of style are you looking for? The music is very varied. Same
thing if someone asked you to name any typical Austrian or German music.
Modern or Old? I'll give some stuff off the top of my head, it it helps....
If you're looking for something well known commercialized African stuff
Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Soweto String Cortet, Vicky
Sampson, Brenda Fassie - Too late for mama
Johnny Clegg & Savuka /Jaluka - zulu guitar e.g. Scatterlings of Africa,
Great Heart
Lucky Dube, Gecko Moon - Green Green Reggae
Mandoza - probably most played kwaito artist in SA, but there are many
others
Wonderboom, Springbok Nude Girls, Sugardrive (lacks substance), Cutting Jade
(good),
Seether (formerly Saron Gas) ,VOD etc rock style
Loyiso - RNB (very good)
Traditional songs like Shosholoza.
South Africa has a lot of jazz talent in Soweto as well. there is a mixture
of African and contempory jazz you might find interesting.
African house mixes are also a lot different from European. Much slower (in
fact its usually European House mixed at a 1/3 of the speed)

There is no such thing as "typical South African music". South
Africa comprises many different groups, nearly all of which have
distinctive folk music. In addition South Africans also write, sing
and play fusion music and music in genres imported from other
cultures.
