Hi,

I'm trying to find information about Chaka's Gate National Park in Natal,
SA. I'm especially interested in photographs. I would greately appreciate
any help.

Thanks,

We have a Royal Natal and a Golden Gate National Park, but I'm not sure
about this Chaka's Gate.

I've also never heard of it, but there are so many little private
parks springing up now next to national parks that anything is
possible - there are several national parks in Natal. I tend to
avoid Natal as a holiday destination - a personal prejudice.

Yes TJ, it is because of that very novel (which I've read 4 times now) that
I'm interested in seeing it for myself. I did try the wilbursmithbooks site
yesterday but it wouldn't open. I'll try again

Chaka's Gate National Park does not exist.
http://www.rhino.org.za/gameparks_index.htm is a complete list of KZN

Ah yes, is not personal prejudice a wondrous thing.
I for example, hold Natal in great affection (in spite of MCharlie &
Co) and yet prejudice demands I rather spend a week in Witpoortjie,
than one hour in execrable Cape Town.

Hmmm, Chaka's rock I've been to, Chaka's gate I've never heard of.

All I can say to that is a hearty South African "Ag shame, hey!"

On reflection there are many places in Natal that I'd rather visit
than Witpoortjie.

Well, I'd go for Royal National Park or Shelter Falls before Witpoortjie.

St. Lucia, Royal Natal National Park (or any places in the
Drakensburg), maybe even Pietermaritzburg.

Hear Hear, Cape Town is an utter shame.
In the spirit of the "New South Africa" it must be renamed
"Ichabod by the sea". Forthwith.

That is no reflection on the many good people of Witpoortjie:-)
I can think of two places in Natal I would seriously recommend NOT
visiting.
1. The abandoned gaol at Harding (Too many fleas).
2. Claremont township after dark (Like Germiston, but more so)

You have not lived unless you have experienced the many splendid
wonders of Newcastle!!!
Just imagine,
Discovering the subtle, exotic, tantalising flavours found only at
Jamoolidien's butchery.
Exploring the nether reaches of marvelous Hutton heights.
Trailing down sutherland street at midday on a bicycle fit for two.
Experience the ethereal, spine stiffening adventure of raiding the
Freemasons lodge at midnight.
The exultant thrill of watching an aspirant member being blackballed
at the Iscor club.

No, no, you are missing out on some of life's major magic:)

What is wrong with you people:-)

Dundee is a very good base to explore northern natal.
(Particularly the now defunct, dark satanic mills of Danhauser)

It has numerous historical places of interest including the museum at
Talana.
The countryside is beautifull, esp in spring. A visit to the Catholic
convent is like being placed in a time machine.

Besides, the roads are still in excellent condition, having been laid
down by my grandfather:-)
cheers

Indeed! Another figment of Mr. Smith's fertile, and very readable,

True. Its most prominent feature is a mine dump (coal) with a smell to match.

Consulation: if you get bored you can always go to Newcastle for the night

Having travelled extensively throughout SA I can assure you Chaka's Gate is a fictional park created by Wilbur Smith in his novel A Sparrow Falls - a brilliant book but pure fiction.

Chaka's Gate, is most likely inspired by Umfolozi/Hluhluwe National Parks in what used to be Zululand. Just visited in Dec of 2015 and had a fantastic trip. Reading that book too, really good!

I have just finished that book.
In my opinion, it is one of the worst books that he has ever written.
The story line is thin and drawn out, more lineage is used to describe his sexual fantasies.
Not the usual breathless pace where one can't wait to turn the page and fgind out what happens next.
It is constantly about bout women's boobs, waists and buttocks and what they do in bed and how many times.
Also, who needs to know that the lion covered the lioness 32 times in a day, it has nothing to do with the story.
I am also in dismay, that in one fell swoop of the pen, he killed off the whole Courtney family, Poor Garrett only gets a casual mention and nothing about Michael's French wife.
Yet, in the next book, they are all alive and well again.
It feels like this book does not belong to the other Courtney books.
All in all, a very disappointing book, the first one that I have been able to lay down at night to continue when I have time.
Usually I read the books in one endless session and forget all about sleeping.

And what book is that?

I don't see any book mentioned in the post you are quoting.

Having said that, I don't know of any National Park named Chaka's Gate
either, and if there were one, it would surely use the more correct
spelling of Shaka.
