TABBY MOYO AT LUDERITZ
THE Namibian Ports Authority (NamPort's) N$75 million project to
deepen and upgrade the Luderitz harbour to cater for increased cargo
has reached an advanced stage.
Developments at Namibia's second harbour are taking place in
conjunction with similar developments at the country's number one
harbour of Walvis Bay.
Dredging to deepen the Luderitz harbour so it can handle larger cargo
ships started last year while construction of a new 500 metre pier (a
multi-purpose landing facility for vessels) is nearing completion.
Once fully completed, large cargo ships with a maximum draught (depth
of water a ship requires for floating) of eight metres will be able
to dock at Luderitz.
The developments have been prompted by the tremendous increase in the
needs of fishing companies and the mines.
Luderitz Port Captain Nick Van Luyk told The Namibian that
construction of the new pier is scheduled to be finished in February
next year. The completed part of the new jetty will be opened this
week.
Van Luyk said the Luderitz project also embraces the construction of
a new cargo handling area and a container terminal.
The new harbour will target mostly fishing companies although Van
Luyk said the large mines in the South were expected to utilise the
improved facilities.
In addition, Government is upgrading the railway line between Aus and
Luderitz to complement the modernisation and expansion of the harbour.
The project is being financed partly by a loan NamPort secured from
the European Investment Bank to cover construction costs and a
minimum amount of cargo handling equipment.
The expansion of Namibia's two ports is a result of the projected
increase in trade between Namibia and southern African states with
the world.
In addition the booming fishing industry demanded new management
approaches and structural changes while better road links between
Namibia and its eastern and northern neighbours (the TransKalahari
and TransCaprivi Highways) are expected to enhance the flow of cargo
through Namibia's ports.
Developments at Walvis Bay have included the upgrading of container
terminal facilities, the purchase of modern container handling
equipment and additional reach stackers, deepening of part of the
harbour to 12,8 metres, upgrading the synchrolift and tanker jetty
and the creation of additional grain storage facilities.
Construction of new grain silos and conveyor belt facilities for
direct loading as well as the offloading of grain products from
vessels are also planned for Walvis Bay.
Namibia was said to be losing out on important business because its
ports were too shallow to accommodate most cargo ships carrying
containers.
Walvis Bay alone has the capacity to handle at least 50 000
containers a year if appropriately equipped.

Hoekom? Hoekom skryf Frikkie knaend in
