BIG UP FOR ETHIOPIAN SECURITY
H.E.Dr. Abdulmajid Hussein, the chairman of the Ethiopian Somali
Democratic League, escaped assassination Monday by two assailants in addis
Ababa. However the assassins, who managed to escape, killed a security
officer and policemen. The two assailants were described as Somalis.
.... .fortunately, it was also reported that the minister's wound was
minor, and that he was receiving medical care. Dr. Abdul Medjed
Hussien, is currently holding the Ethiopian Transport and
Communications portfolio, on top of his Chairmanship of the ESDL .
No organization immediately claimed responsibility for the attack,
but observers concluded that it was probably carried out by Ethiopian
Somalis opposed to the central government and to Abdul Medjid's party.

Hello All....
It is very sad that we Africans can not express our oppositions
without the use of violence. I am glad that Dr. Abdul Medjed escaped
the assination attempt, and his would be assassins will be caught and
brought
to justice. The Cycle of Violence in Africa should be stopped now.

Dhaqane said his group would continue attacking senior government

Any affiliation with Dhaqane?

"Fundamentalists in Mogadishu"? And what purpose does this namecalling
serve? Regardless of whether or not Somalis who associate themselves
with the "Al-Itihad" organizations in the Somali peninsula are correct or
not, it is imperative that they be not degraded and labeled
foreign-inspired names. You would not dare calling names any Christian
or Jewish organization in the west or would you?
Perhaps you have a narrow objective in repeating what your equals say,
but it is important to show some respect for organizations that may
oppose political programs that you may be sympetheic to.
Think about this.

Dear Khaliif
The above statement is so True in Africa. When our leaders
capture power (through what ever means) they lose their common sense
and
practice the unthinkable on their own people. They forget that the
rest
of the body is not a part of the head, and believe that the head can
survive without the body. The truth is diametrically the opposite.
We Africans need to change these cycle (abuse of power by the leaders)
through whatever means neccessary expect that of Violence. If you look
at our (Africans) post colonial history, you can see that most of the
sub-
Saharan countries are underdeveloped, war-torn, and full of violence.
For us our future remains a hostage of the past. Today we kill the
leaders,
tomorrow the leaders' sons and daughters kills us, (Today it was Dr.
Abdulmedjed tomorrow it will be the would be assassins) and the cycle
repeat itself over and over again. If you pick any country in Africa
randomly you will be able to see that the drama of violence is playing
under our own eyes. (Wethere it is Clan against Clan, Tribe against
Tribe, and so on..) We are caught up in the web where we are always
romanticizing that one day our Great Revolution will be the end to our
suffering, but at the same time we tend to forget that the people who
are
killed in the name of revolution and democracy are romanticizing about
their own Great Revolution. Now tell me where in Africa Violence has
brought any justice and peace to the mass. So what is the solution?
Is
our differences that great that we can not work out a solution
peacefully?
I think not... I know we can do it.. If you ask me what is the
solution, I
will say it is PEACE. How we are going to achieve it is the greatest
obstacle we Africans face today.

Dear Mr Takghen
you proposed a number of propositions that might be taken into account
in the attempt at trying to understand why Africa is in this agony
today. As you have already mentioned, at the centre of African
governments are their leaders. They think they are unique type of
persons, while their megalomania is satisfied solely by the ruthless
elimination of any obstructions to their fantastical desires of limitness
power. They terrorise their own people to remain loyal through the use of
indiscriminate murder. you see Mr Takghen, what distinguishes African
regimes from, say democratic ones, is their relience on terror and mass
murder. Only to take one example, Prisedent Meles Zenawi talks about
democracy in Ethiopia, However, we know that Ethiopia is succeeding in
wiping out enormous number of people in machine like manner in Ogadenia?
Does he think this is a democratic way of governing? the answer is now.
An example of the resultant unpredictability is what happened in many
African countries. In other words, the brutality of these leaders had
profoundly disorientated the masses and weaken their combative power to
the point where it paradoxically destroyed their own regimes. In short,
to me, the reason why Africa is in this jeapordy situation is because of
the evil motives of self-interest, greed, covetausness and thirst for
power. It is under these conditions that the crime of humanity is
committed and still is taking place in almost all African countries.
What can be done? It is possible to say that VIOLENCE agaist ruthless
regimes is one way of acheiving ever lasting political freedom and human
equality.

Dear Eliab G. Tarkghen:
Allow me to participate your discussion about the cycle of violence in
Africa. Mr. Eliab, I see contradictions in your part....Your
present Government once upon a time went overseas to fight with Amhara
dominated Governemet...do you remember (TPLF)...Today, you're preaching
peace and tolerence....We all Somalis share one thing in common and that is
Westren Somalis' independent and the ability to run our affairs as you Tigre
people do...I do not believe fighting...but, (you) the people of (TPLF)
have a record of killings and muder in Westren Somalia and else where in
Ethiopia...All over sudden, I hear a cry for peace.....Haven't you read
the recent article of Sue Pollock an Scottish human right work?.......Your
government have bad record of Human rights violation......please stop your
contradictions.......Dr. Abdulmajid is one individual......think
about...what is right.....how do we work together in separating Westren
Somali from Ethiopia? Here is where the peace lies....Any thought in
this....

By the same token, how do you expect people to respect an Ethiopian
regime which murdered the elected mayor of Qabridaharre in broad day
light for simply citing his rights as the administrator of the city? Are
you familiar with this incident? If not, how could you just accuse
people as "terrorists" by defending their dignity, religion and families
from the militia-backed regime of Meles Zenawi?

Dear Cavers:
War bal Toosa: Here is historical facts....observed and written down by a
student of Somali history and culture. Here is some of his writings:
.......Now, not merely in the North, but over most of their Westren
periphery, the Somali clansmen were experiencing Ethiopian pressure,
which though for the most part irregular and spasmodic in its application
nevertheless produced a considerable effect. And caught between the
conflicting ambitions of the Ethiopians on the hinterland, and the
French, British, and Italian, on the coast, individual Somali clans and
lineages sought to profit from this rivalry by playing one side off
against another. The effect of this was to weaken the general position of
the Somali and to encourage the entrenchment of foreign interests.

Am I wrong to assume that most of those who are using the term
"terrorists" against the gu men who atempted to stop Abdulmajid and
terminate his divisive presence among the Western Somalis are of from his
own subclan ?
And that the others who are defending the actions of those gunmen, including
myself are of from some other somali clans ?
When it comes to the issue of the Somalis, it appears that Meles is
going to have a great deal of balancing act to do, the Anfars of Jabuti
are expecting him to support in their armed struggle with the Issa Somalis,
but to do so would be against Abdulmajid~s plans for the Western Somalis,
he would like to recognize the Somaliland entity, but that would have
the potential effect of giving the Somali clans a badly needed
reason to re-unite against something, anything.
An Ethiopian diplomatic recognition to Somaliland might also be seen
as being against the interests of Jabouti because such an action may upset
the fundamentals of the economy of that one-city-state because of the
potential/eventual competition from the port of Berbera.

Dear Atto: Excellent analysis. Abdimajid Hussein, the honourable Minister

are non-Somalis who are against him simply 'cause Dr. Abdimajid happen to be

Oromos...for the fact that Dr. Abdimajid happens to be Somali..... It is
also unfortunate that Dr. Abdimajid is seen as anti-Somali interest!...He
is the only senior Minister of the Melas government.....I hope that Dr.

his.....This is the only way the Somali interest could be protected...all of

Dear Atto,
The subliminal message in your above statement is that Berbera port would
be deprived its potential if Somalia is put back together. Of course you
are cleaverly implicating the Djiboutians on this. Bargaining chip to
Djiboutians. If they desire a prosperous city sate economy, they must nick

Hello Muhamed
If you reread my post you will see that I do not in any way
advocate any kind of violence. So, if the government is committing
violence then it should also be condemned and not respected as
well. Mr. Muhamed I am just tired of violence in our continent.
Everyday the news we hear about ourselves is how we are poor,
hungry, underdeveloped etc..... . To make the situation even worse,
we add violence to it. So how do you expect things to get better
for us ? Again I will ask you the same question.... Is our difference
that much great that we can not work and live together?
For example take Somalia, How could a nation of people who have
so much in common (linguistic, religion, culture...etc.) find a lame
excuse CLAN and fight each other. Have you ever asked yourself
is it really worth it to fight, rather than live together? Have you ever
wondered how much money is spent in buying killing machines?
Could you just imagine what would happen if the same amount of
money is spent on education, agriculture, and buildings...etc? Well
the point I am trying to make is we are always FIGHTING because
of various reasons, but Did we ever try other venues to solve our
problems? The answer is NO! Why because it is not the Africans
way of doing it..... Again enough is enough, Now is the time to stop
the cycle and LEARN FROM OUR PAST MISTAKES. The fruit
of Violence is Nothing, and that is the big Lesson yet to be learned
by Africans every where.

Somali Islam Group Claims Attacking Ethiopian
MOGADISHU (July 9) Islamic radical group AL-Itihad Al-Islam said here
today it was responsible for the armed attack on Abdulmajid Hussein,
Transportd
and Communication Minister of the Ethiopian government on Monday.
A spokesman for AL-Itihad in Mogadishu, Abdulkadir Mohamud
Dhaqane, said his
group has carried out the attack which he described as a
prudent measure against
what he called the obstacles to independence in the eastern region of
Ethiopia
inhabited By the Somalis. The spokesman, speaking to reporters in
South Mogadishu today, has accused
the Ethiopian minister of dividing the Somali community in Zone fifth of
Ethiopia and creating unrest in the region.
The spokesman also termed as illegitimate the political party chaired By
Abdulmajid, Ethiopian Somali Democratic League (ESDL), the strongest
party in
fifth zone Ethiopia.
Dhaqane threatened that they will continue their attacks on Ethiopia's
high-ranking officials and their guerrilla fighting in the eastern region
until
Zone fifth attains independence from Ethiopia.
"Abdulmajid will not escape next time although he survives this attack,"
said
Dhaqane who admitted that 18 other senior officials are in his targeted list
and
will be executed soon.
The Islamic extremist group of Al-Itihad earlier claimed the
responsibility
of a series of explosions which occurred in Addis Ababa, the capital of
Ethiopia, in January and February this year.
Dhaqane said his organization has carred out the bomb attacks in Ghion and
Ras hotels in Addis Ababa in which four people were killed and more than 20
others wounded in February.
Dhaqane has also claimed that his group were responsible for the
killing of
senior military official in the Defense Ministry of Ethiopia, Brigader
General
Haylom Ariya on February 14 in Addis Ababa.
He said like those in Eritrea, Somalis in eastern Ethiopia must have their
own rights for national referendum where the people can decide their future
determination.
The supporters of Al-Itihad Al-Islam have found strong bases along the
border
regions between Somalia and Ethiopia for more than five years.
The Moslem extremists benefitting from the anarchy in Somalia have collected
a lot of weapons and ammunition. They also have many bases in Somalia
including
Luq and Qardho districts and Hawd reserve area of Somaliland, the break away
republic of Somalia. Al-Itihad has many religious followers among the
youngsters
from many different regions of Somalia.
Eliab.
Dear Hayan,
My point is that there is not enough shipping traffic to support so
many ports in the coast line between Massawa to Bosaso, you should expect
Jabouti to be understandably very defensive about this issue, and when you
add the Eritrean <massawa> factor in this equation, things may even become
more complicated.
You keep jumping into this "unity obsession" of yours, but you know what ?
Berbera may turn out to be the loser in this looming competition
between Massawa, Djabouti, Seylac, Berbera and Bosaaso, so what do you
think ?
According to this scenario Unity may actually become a profitable
endeaver, so I suggest you not empty the trash-can yet :>

It is OK to kill them but if they respond they are terrorist!
Eliab, I think you need to know what is going on out there before you throw
acusations like these.
This war have been going on since 1992 and it was not started by the Al-itihad,
it was started by the EPRDF's unprovoked attack on Haloyo in which they killed
24 members of Alitihad amongst them their leader.
To this date the EPRDF has not given any reason for this attack and the one
after it in fact they always get extremely angary when this question is put
to them.
Alitihad have been defending itself two years without attacking the EPRDF
hoping a solution may be found to this problem and only after it became clear
to them that the EPRDF was only intrested in war they started their 1994
counter attack wich forced the EPRDF to call for ceasefire in mid 1995.
Alitihad had agreed to this ceasefire and observed it though the EPRDF killed
four members of alitihad during the 6 months truce.
The two sides met several times to resolve the problem but did not succeed
because the EPRDF's demand was surrender while Alitihad's demand was a
government that they can trust.
The last meeting before the end of the truce was in October which i heard
have ended in the two sides exchanging threats, and soon both sides resumed
their fighting with less intensity but with enlarged operation area.
The EPRDF have started to intimidate the Somali refugees in the north and
intensified its opression campaign in the central regions, while alitihaad
had started operating in the north making Babili as unsafe for the EPRDF as
Gedey and extended its arm to the previously save cities of Harar Diridawa
and now Adis-abba as the EPRDF is frequently going deep into Somalia searching
for alitihad.
It seems to me that there is two sides which are fighting here for whatever
reason and each of them have the right to shoot back, therefore wouldn't you
say it is unjust to simply listen to one argument and declare the other
guilty.
isn't the terrorist the one who terrorise the innocent.
Nabadeey
I think the two statement sum all that i can say, the only thing left for me
is to say that this is a culture, I mean the violence, which unless we change
we will go no further from where we are now, and you know how hard it is to
change a culture, an other proverb " Waxaad baratay waa baaskaa".
The translation of the first one is, I guess " one shouldn't be startled by
the snap of the twig that he breaks" I.e. the consequences of your actions
should not surprise you.
I would like a peaceful solution to every problem and it is not hard to find
one but if one chooses to use force, then there is no other option left for
the other.
Miraad Layli Siigaale was not threat to any one when he was shot dead for no
reason other than fear of his disobedience, I say fear, I think you know in
that part of the world people are killed for what they may be thinking let
alone what they say or do.
