Here are some excerpts from that book:
"When Menelik bagan his move to conquer the
southern region in the 1890's, he firt fought
the armies of the Muslim emirate of Harar under
Emir Abdullahi, and his defeat of Abdullahi at
battle of Chelenko brught an end to four hundred
years of virtally uninterrupted rule. The Harar
emirate, northwest of the Ogaden, was a small but
separate nation that had used its strategic position
astride the trade routes from the interior to the
gulf of Aden to build a thriving economy. It was
composed of a minority ruling group known as the
Adere(or Harari), who had built a network of alliances
with other groups, including Somali and Oromo, all of
whom paid tribute to the emirate. Islam united these
groups and played an important role in cementing
oppositon to the Christain Menelik. The walled city
of Harar was considered a holy city by the Muslims
and its capture by Christians thus added religious
animosity t anti-Ethiopian sentiment. The French
traveler and writer Henri de Monfreid, who worked
for Menelik, tells a story that illustrates this:
when Melelik received an emissary from Abdullahi
on the eve of the battle of Chelenko, the emissary
brought a Muslim turban, along with the message that
if Menelik wore the turban, the emir's troops would
not harm him; if not, then--by Allah!--the emir would
tie up him and his men with ropes and dispose of them
as he saw fit. Menelik replied that he would wear the
turban until the good Lord Medhane Alem(the savior of
the world) granted him victory, and he would then stand
on the top of the minaret on the central mosque, urinate
on it, demolish the mosque, and there build the church
of Medhane Alem in its place. Menelik was a man of his
word, for the church stands there today.
Although this act was clear designed to put the finishing
touches on the defeat of the Adere, they nevertheless managed
to preserve their language and culture by confining themselves
to thte walled city--a solution that also suited the conqueror's
security considerations. And so a small nation, now numbering some
30, 000, survived. After his victory, Menelik placed him cousin
Ras Mekonnen(Haile Selassie's Father) in charge of consolidating
and expanding from the base of Harar. Mekonnen fulfilled his
imperial mission by settling up military garrisons throughout
the Ogaden, and thus extending the Ethiopian empire to its
present porder with Somalia." Later when Ras Mekonnen was replaced
by his son, Haile Selassie, the book continues to write that:
"Part of Haile Selassie's program was aimed at social integraton
through intermarriage. He often ranted and raved at his governors
and generals for not talking the initiative in this,refusing to
acknowledge the socail and cultural gap dividing the Somali from
the Amhara--not least among such gaps being religion. His repeatedly
paraphrased dictum was that the best way to a man's heart is through
his stomach: "Tell your idle wives to teach Somali young women how to
cook Ethiopian food and make tella(beer), and religion will not be
obstacle".
The chauvinism implicit in this imperial command was two edged:
not only were Somali women presumed not to know how to cook, but
only Amhara men(mostly soldiers) were to marry Somali women.
