I tried doing that early yesterday, without xposting, and it never
showed up on soc.culture.somalia. That newsgroup has very light
traffic; is it possible, even though it's a bambi group. that the
mail2news gateway does not carry that group?

Yes, there are five groups blocked in the soc.culture hierarchy for
posts via the mail2news gateway, although s.c.somalia isn't one of them.
In general I get more abuse complaints about soc.culture than everything
else put together.
