instead, or Korcula on the Adriatic, you'll enjoy that much more, I am
sure.
But if you are really looking for sad places visit Dachau or Auschwitz

Ljubljana is rather smalll town for a capital, 4 days would be enough, you
shuold spend the rest taking trips all around Slovenia (Alps for example) or
go to Adriatic for the rest of your vacations.

I visited a couple of years ago and found it an attractive city. It's
pretty small, though, so I don't think you could spend a long time there...

The Hotel Bled was about $100 a night several years ago, and
a dreary place. It was the cheapest I could find downtown
after about 1.5 hours search, but those more familiar with
the city could give you a better rundown. We fled to the
outskirts after one night there, looked for signs
advertising "zimmer" and "camera" and found a nice place
(but with the bathroom down the hall) for $10 a night.
Switched to a nicer place for $25 the next night with an in
suite bathroom.

Happy is the man who escaped from the Saint Florian's Valley into the
wide world. It is a feeling as if one washed himself of some goo that
was sticking all over his body. As if he had been rid of some burden
that was holding him down and soared like a condor over the Andes,
strong, free, reborn. For the Saint Florian's Valley places great
demands upon its denizens: it demands not only obedience – that is
well taken care of – it demands love! I cannot say what is there in
the Saint Florian's Valley that would stir love in one's heart. The
Valley may indeed pretty in places but there are many other pretty
valleys in the world which are inhabited by people that are much
better than those living in the Saint Florian's Valley.
Now it has been noted in the Saint Florian's Valley that those who
sought illumination, well-being and freedom in far away places became
far too corrupted to remain citizens of Saint Florian's Valley. For
citizenship means the right to vote and how could those who became
corrupted in the free world possibly know how to choose properly the
movers and shakers of the Saint Florian's Valley. On the other hand,
it does not seem appropriate to lose all control over the cosmopolitan
expatriates and that is why the Valley enacted a special law which is,
as all things Saint Florian's something special, something that the
world has never seen before. This law bestows benefits upon those
worldly persons who may have escaped the Valley but for reasons that
are strange and incomprehensible still come around for a visit from
time to time and who are good to be gouged and ripped off a bit.
These will thus become denizens of Saint Florian's but without
citizenship and as such eligible for special privileges not accorded
to foreigners. The benefits, however, will be granted only by the good
grace of the mayor and the Saint Florian's notables and will be only
for those who can point out who is boss and who commands. And should
the mayor and notables be dissatisfied with someone the rights and
privileges of that person will be extinguished like a brief candle.
Thus the notables will ensure that no cosmopolitan slicker will
confuse the masses at meetings by idle talk about democracy and other
degenerate ideas of Western Europe and French revolution.

ancient times it was built "on the Ljubljanica River"... but the
