But unfortunately, I won't be there during Karl-Heinz's visit. We did
get together a few times during his last trip, though, and John and I

That reminds me of an anecdote my vegetarian daughter related to me the
other day. When she was traveling in L.A. with a friend, they stopped off
at a deli for a bite. She loves veggie and cream cheese
sandwiches/bagels/pitas, what have you. And, so when the server took their
order, she made it quite clear that she was vegetarian and that she wished a
veggie and herbed cream cheese on a bagel. Upon taking the first bite, she
felt she was going to puke because of an unfamiliar taste. She asked the
waitress, what is this in my bagel that makes it taste so foul. The server
told her, "You wanted lox". My daughter, not knowing what lox was, asked
for an explanation. When told that it was salmon, she was horrified.
Evidently when she ordered her veggies and cream cheese, she thought the
waitress asked "Lots?" (meaning lots of cream cheese) to which my daughter
responded in the affirmative. My daughter cannot understand why a server
would ask a vegetarian if they want fish in their food. :) :)

(I rise and start to protest, but my uncle opens the door and shoves
me inside. Obviously something is up, and my mother and older sister
are evidently on it as it is a full half hour before I get back out on
the porch. To my surprise, my beau is somewhat tipsy and my Uncle
Chuck is cheerfully pouring him another shot of single malt)
Me: Uncle Chuck, he doesn't drink!
Uncle Chuck: truer words were never spoken, my dear.
(Beau makes an attempt to explain how he got into this situation, but
my uncle helps out)
Uncle Chuck: well, since he has an affinity for grains and plants, and
things grown from the earth, I asked him about hops and wheat and oats
and all, and found out that he only drinks distilled water, so I
convinced him that he should try some of this...!
I was rather upset, particularly when Beau stood up to go to the
bathroom, but fell off the front porch and had an accident, and I
wound up driving back to Washington, DC with him sleeping soundly in
the back seat--a four hour drive.
Shot my weekend all to hell...

BTW I never thanked you for your comments on my photobucket site. I got a
new camera at Christmas time and have been using it regularly ever since. I
kind of take a quantity versus quality approach. If I push the button often
enough then some of them will turn out better than the rest!

If you're oot in it, but I can remember being cooried alow the quilt,
listening to the waves crash on the shore,watching the last of of the
fire's flames flicker on the ceiling and feeling so safe and cosy and
loving it ;-)

Based on the photos I have seen, I wish I had accepted the invitations I
received to visit Scotland when my brother lived there for several years.
He is in Wales now.

Aha, "a broch", eh ? So I dutifully googled 'Broch' and found:
A Broch is an Iron Age drystone hollow-walled structure of a type found only
in Scotland. Brochs include some of the most sophisticated examples of
drystone architecture ever created, and belong to the classification
"complex Atlantic Roundhouse" devised by Scottish archaeologists in the
1980s.
