About ten years ago ABBA was offered a cool billion dollars to do a 100
concert tour.
They turned it down.
Now there's a Swede for you.

Apparently Agnetha (Fältskog), the blonde one, has always hated flying
and now totally refuses to do so. Allegedly why all four members of
the group attended only the Swedish premiere of Mamma Mia in Stockholm
and not the L*nd*n one.

Then again, they may sound just as good as they ever did.
Voices tend to wear well over time, even maturing and strengthening.
Consider all the Fifties rock stars still bellowing them out and the singers
well into their sixties and early seventies.

As to the money, you are most likely right.
I believe two or three million of their albums still sell every year.
The royalties on that must make a tidy sum.

I'm hoping the hoopla over "Mama Mia" might lure them out.
Hells bells, I'd settle for one TV spectacular and it from Stockholm.
I did admire that group.
They were one of a kind...............

The ladies have kept singing all these years and their voices are still
excellent. The two chaps have also maintained their skills, constantly
playing and writing. I doubt that they'd have much of a problem putting it
all together again.

I wish they would.
They still have a tremendous fan base out there.
And in this age, a hundred concert tour really wouldn't be necessary.
Just TV specials and some new songs.

From my local paper last week...

No more ABBA? Mamma Mia!

The two guys from ABBA say the group will never ever perform again.

Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, shown, tell London's Sunday Telegraph
there's nothing that will entice them onstage again.

Ulvaeus says money is not a factor and they want people to remember them as
they were: "young, exuberant, full of energy and ambition."

The film version of the musical Mamma Mia!, which features ABBA songs, comes
out July 16 in North America.

Hey Miz Helen!
Yeah, I read that pronouncement.
I'm waiting for the hysteria to mount as "Mama Mia" is released all over the
world.
It only took hearing "Dancing Queen" on the movie trailers to restore my
abba-mania.
What impact is the entire movie going to have?
Performers do love to perform, especially to rabid fans.
So there is hope. There is hope.

I remember Agnetha Fältskog (the blonde lassie) did a new song several
years ago, but it had nothing like the punch of the old ABBA hits. I too
have a soft spot for them. Almost everything they did is in my music
collection. I'm sure they easily do another chart topper.

I saw the musical several years ago in Las Vegas. It actually was
pretty good.

I have this horrible feeling that the movie isn't going to do it
justice. Too much 'star power' and I never figured folks like Meryl
Streep for musical performers.

I think you guys must all have been old at the time!

Abba were regarded as pretty rubbish by most of my friends. I remember an
Abba revival group coming to Aberdeen in the mid 90's and one of our members
of staff was going along, getting dressed up and really excited about it.
She said to me it must have been really exciting being around when they were
on the go. She really didn't believe me when I said most of us didn't rate
them at all at the time!

The amazing part is, as unique and successful as the group was, no wannabes
showed up to cash in after the group disbanded.
But who could hope to match that sound or create such songs?

They had the last laugh. They made some of the best Pop must of the

Now let's get this right - it wasn't Mozart, it was written as pop-

Anybody who thinks otherwise is a musical snob for sure.

What's a billion dollars US going to buy them? A couple of gallons of petrol

I can only assume you are having a "Senior Moment" here.
Either that or you are yet another stone deaf BeeGees fan.

Dig out your polyester suit and dancing shoes.

They aren't still after the filthy lucre are they? That's sad.
I agree that it's an absolute travesty that they didn't all do the decent
thing and die young from a gross excess of lots of everything all the time.
But you have to see it in the context of the 70's. They couldn't sing, they
couldn't play, but- following the likes of the Bay City Rollers - WE DIDN'T
FUCKIN' CAAAAAAARRRE!!!
Heady days. I still play them occasionally and it still makes where I used
to have hair stand on end even yet.

I've been trying to think of a single person I knew who were taken in by the
original Europop Muzak Manufacturers and I'm pretty certain there was not a
single one. Not one who would dare admit to it anyway.

Apart from their over-producing (16 track?) souless clonepap even I was
sickened by their relentless mercenary targeting of the brain-dead 13 - 17
year old female record buying market (virtually the only demographic who
were still buying 'singles' back then) in order to stay in the charts and on
TV.

"You are the Dancing Queen , young and sweet, only seventeen".

My collection is actually quite diverse; ranging from classical and 40's
big band, through 80's indy and new wave, to some extremely hard-edged
industrial techno. The Swedes are only one small part of it all. There,
did I redeem myself in any way?

They started off in the 70's as Joy Division, but after the lead singer
committed suicide, reformed appropriately as New Order. Pioneers of the
independent record movement which sought to end the stranglehold of big
corporations with innovative, quirky, non-conformist music and a
distinctly non-commercial outlook on record production. They exerted a
huge influence on the indy music scene from their base in Manchester. Of
course, they made some money in the process (paid the bills, etc.), but
never really sold out in principle, as most bands are tempted to do. A
few of their songs were used in a number of well-known films, including
some American ones.

Valve radios were great for sound quality. I have a friend in the Black Isle

cannibalises some to get others working as it's almost impossible to get the

Nothing wrong with valves - Mr Spock even managed to build a basic

I'm not convinced that Johnny Rotten even grasped the concept of concepts -
especially other peoples concepts.

I've just Googled the lyrics of 'Blank Generation' which I confess I was
unfamiliar with. I see what you mean but it's stretching it a bit to say
that Rotten 'copied' it.
That mood among intelligent disaffected youth was pretty much universal at
the time - brought on by massive overdoses of pure unadulterated Abba and/or
The Osmonds et al. The first rule of ideas is that if you are having an
orginal one you can guarantee that dozens of other people are having the
same idea simultaneously.

Aye, was being sarcastic. I swear it; he sounded positively bored and it
often seemed like he struggled to actually finish a song. One of their
tracks appeared to make fun of him by a well-timed voice mute halfway
through. I think it was a remix of "Round and Round".

A lot of other indy bands carried on with the crap singing tradition.
Happy Mondays, for one example. Thought my cassette player was broken
first time I listened to them.

I remember when Alice Cooper ran for POTUS. "Alice Cooper is hope" was his
campaign slogan.
I agree Roxy Music live was an absolutely class act when they managed to hit
the zone.

Consider this Adam's farewell eulogy as he prepares to raft the Pacific in
his version of Kon Tiki.
People, you'd best address the auld gaffer whilst you can.

Very much so, very refined. The Stooges on the other hand were raw power.

Those stone statues do bear a strong resemblance to old Adam, especially
about the nose.
Perhaps he is off to visit kinsmen.

: ) Absolutely Brilliant!

It's astonishing that, though I haven't seen them for close on fifty years,
it seems like only yesterday once reminded.

In fact I'm now almost recovered from the 'service' in my local 'hardware
shop'. Only half an hour ago I was seriously weighing up if would be worth
being jailed then deported for the sweet pleasure of busting the
'assistant's' fat lips all over his surly Dago puss.
Now, thanks to flobadob therapy, the adrenaline is subsiding and I realise
it would have been a hasty over-reaction.
My new plan is to crack him over the head from behind so he won't know it
was me. Not quite so gratifying as smashing his face in but it's balanced by
the lack of dire consequence.
So thanks for that.

And this is where you guys go for entertainment on a dull Aussie evening?

(BTW, why do you Brits insist on pronouncing "Loopty Loop" as "Looby Lou"?)

Possibly because they've never heard of 'Loopty Loop'. Is it something to

Kind AND gracious is our Adam.
Let's wish him well on his rafting expedition to the Great Barrier Reef.
(And all the Great Whites went "Burp")
