Since this group is supposed to be about Scottish culture, people
should discuss one of Scotland's greatest exports - The Broons and Oor
Wullie.
For 60 years these cartoon characters have delighted the nation but
have also caused great confusion among readers.
In the hope of getting some answers I appeal to my fellow Scots and
fans of the Broons and Oor Wullie to answer the following questions:
Unexplained mysteries of The Broons and Oor Wullie:
1. Why don't Maw, Paw and Grandpaw have first names?
2. Why does everyone rush round to Grandpaw's after listening to the
bairn - she has it wrong every time. Granpaw isn't having an affair,
a heart attack, eloping, dying etc - he's just doing something at the
'boolin' club to 'black affront' Maw.
3. Has no-one noticed Hen Broon and Wullie's da are either the same
man or brothers? Did Maw steal hen from outside the post office - it
would explain why he's nothing like the rest of them.
4. Why does Wullie's metal bucket never rust?
5. Where did Wullie's girlfriend Primrose Patterson come from?
6. Has Paw never suspected that Joe and Maggie might not be his?
7. Why does Maw still let Paw do DIY? Every time he so much as picks
up a hammer he manages to flood the place, make the ceiling cave in,
turn all the lights in Glebe St out, make huge holes in the wall or
smash the windows.
8. Did Wullie's Paw take revenge for Maw Broon stealing his twin
brother by stealing one of her triplets - Wullie is the spitting image
of the Broon twins.
9. What are Granny Sookers?
10. Where on earth is there a tenement that will have room for a
family of ten? And why do the Broons live in a close when Grandpaw
has a detached house?
11. How does Fat Boab manage to lose three stone just by chasing
Wullie round the streets for a couple of hours?
12. Why do rich American tourists always seem to be passing evey time
Wullie has some kind of art/ sculpture/ bucket exhibition?
13. Why does Maw insist on hanging out white sheets when Wullie and
his pals are playing fitba in the garden?
14. Why does PC murdoch never have any crime to solve?
Any help from my countrymen would be gratefully received.

Large white peppermint sweeties, traditionally associated with grannies (who
always semed to magically produce a 'wee pokie o grannie sookers' whenever a
bairn hurt him/herself, as a distraction/pacifier). They used to last
forever - but you wouldn't get many in a 'quarter'! Also known as
"pepperies" in some parts.

(Helen I'm sure would have an even better answer, given her Fife sweetie
shop heritage!)

Cheers

...........also known as 'sermon sookers' - to suck away at during the
minister's ranting on and on (and, of course, there were also
'gob-stoppers': even bigger and they changed colour as you sooked - the fun
was taking them out to see what colour they'd changed into and comparing
them with those in the pews behind and in front)
Cheers.

Don't forget 'the twins' and 'the bairn'. I mean, calling your mum, dad and
grandfather Maw, Paw and Grandpaw is fine, but what are the childrens names?
twin 1, twin 2, and bairn? Can you imagine if all parents called their
children that?!

I always wondered about that one....I mean, they can afford a holiday home
as well(the but n' ben) but not a bigger house?

On another note, did anyone ever see the Naked Video programme (comedy
sketch show on BBC2, I think). They did a Broons spoof once, where a lot of
these points were taken up and made a mockery of! The thing I can always
remember is the Bairn complaining she'd been wearing 'the same stupid pink
dress for 50 years!' and the twins asking what their names were...

Is there a URL where I could get a look at this?
It sounds slightly interesting.
