Jayzus. I'm stupefied at how some people fight so hard and dirty against a
health care system that so many of us (in social democratic countries) take
for granted and appreciate. As is often the case with online news articles,
readers comments are very interesting.

Not everyone who has access to a free health care system use it
- many still take out private insurance as well as contributing through
taxes
to the public system.

You obviously don't feel that those better off in society should support
the ones
who are in need.

What about free education - should childless couples still pay taxes towards
that;
or pension support for the aged

The thing is that you never know when your circumstance may be such that
you will be glad that free system is in place, but think, if you haven't
contributed
should you still be able to access it?

Fred's an awfu Rightard Social Darwinist who could not
care less about people starving or dying of exposure so
long as their corpses are kept clear of his driveway. You
are talking to one of the evil Lizard-Brained bastards who
make life such a Hell On Earth for so many people who
Don't Have Theirs yet.

Still, he drives on the Highways and relies upon the Armed
Forces, and he himself is a 'Defence' Contractor who sucks
up taxpayer-monies directly from the Government Teat, so
in addition to being a General Rotter he is also a Class 1-A
Hypocrite - as with *most* Conservatard Bastards...

I must say that when you set out to make yourself look like a mindless
jerk, you really do a great job.

Nil isn't stupid at all. Health care for all is one of the most
successful programs ever introduced to Canada and has the total
backing of the Canadian people. It is the only issue that brings
protesters of all classes out onto the streets when it is threatened,
some thing that doesn't happen too often as it is considered political
suicide. The fact that you don't have universal health care in the US
simply underlines the Canadian and European opinion that the US is a
callous, money grubbing society which places no value on human life
when it is threatened. Do you understand that to us from the civilized
world, you seem like a hangover from the Middle Ages, a westernized
version of Tsarist Russia with pluocrats in charge and the poor serfs
never knowing that they are always lied to.
Do yourself a favour, stop posting garbage; stick to whatever you know
some thing about, which I must admit seems to be pretty much nothing,
And stop telling people that you're Scottish; because you embarrass us
all when you open your big stupid yap.

Canada thinks so. No citizen is turned away. Canada understands that
you can have bad luck and be left penniless.
When my wife died, Canada gave me half her pension. I didn't want to
take it - I felt I was in some way profiting from her death. A civil
servant led me aside and told me that I should accept the money as my
wife's last gift to me to make sure that I could manage with the kids.
The government also offered the kids help with university fees and
offered other small but significant grants for amounts for further
studies. Our youngest girl took the grants and now heads the ICU in an
Ottawa hospital. When I asked her why ICU, she said simply, "I wanted
to give something back".

One of the very few political heroes I have is the late great
Scottish-Canadian Tommy Douglas, Christian pastor btw, who introduced
universal health care to Canadians. I cannot even imagine that you could
graft a Tommy Douglas heart and inclusion onto the American political
scenery. It really does take HEART (a concept which seems to offend even
Conway in his defence of F***) to undersand the concept of "we are our
brother's keeper."

I will never forget the words of an American conservative when I told him
that the type of bone marrow transplant I had runs in the range of $500,000
of taxpayer money, and he responded, "Take no personal offence, but what a
waste of money", whereas in Canada, every time we witness a medical miracle
or a simple cure, we celebrate and know that our money is well spent.
Because, you never know, next time it could be *you* or your child or your
mother ... or .....

But, they are still considered marginalized politicos by the majority of the
American public, whereas Tommy Douglas in his day and until the present
time, though he is long deceased, is lovely embraced by the majority of
Canadians. Tommy Douglas wouldn't last but a heartbeat down in the U.S.

Here's a 1983 speech by IMHO the greatest Scottish Canadian ever:

The message is still relevant.

Tommy was dead three years later. But still beloved.

To the extent that is correct, it's important to understand
*why* it is correct... The demonisation of the word 'Liberal'
began under Ronald Reagan: a man who believed to his
dying day (and said so, many times) that Redwood Forests
*caused* Air Pollution; a man who had videotape of _one_
CSUC-riot at _one_ campus in the `60's sent round to multiple
television stations in college towns throughout California to
broadcast as though it was footage from *their* campus, and
used that as an excuse to close _ALL_ of the campuses; a
man who tried to _eliminate_ the US Department Of Education
altogether once he became president. And when he found that
he couldn't eliminate it, he and his party of Opportunist Bastards
settled for dumbing-down America (which is the only way they
can ensure Future Repuglikkkans, since Education is anathema
to Conservatardation) by underfunding Public Education to the
degree that many, *many* Americans simply grow up Sthooopid.

So when Faux Noise (the 'news' channel most friendly to Stupid
People) tells the Marching Moron Monkeymass that Public Health
Care is a Communist Plot to Pull The Plug On Grandma, they
*believe* it, because they haven't had exposure to Facts or training
in Critical Thought which would enable them to question it or know
the truth.

And when you see Adam or myself saying something like: "there
can be no truck with Conservatism; it's deadly and it Kills, and it
Oppresses, and Exploits, and Harms, and Destroys," you might
not want to go all Kum-Ba-Yah on us and suggest Group Hugs with
these wilfully-ignorant knuckle-dragging Neanderthal lizard-brained
Throwbacks!

When one sees Cockroaches it's time to call the Exterminator.
One does not have a Group Hug with the cockroaches in order
to try to convince them to stay out of the kitchen. One does not
expect Reason from the cockroaches. One expects from them
only the behaviour of *Cockroaches*, because _it is in their nature_.
(Or have you not heard the parable of the Frog and the Scorpion?)

Of course I know the parable of the Frog and the Scorpion, and this brings
to mind the great Tommy Douglas speech on "Mouseland". Actually, I think

it's still relevant:

Thank you, Nilita, but remember we are much closer in our beliefs than many
here recognize.

I too belief in universal health care.
It is an abomination to deny sound health care programs to poorer citizens.

But two things concern me about the current boondoggle here in America,
how are we to pay for it and how are we to keep it becoming yet another
program to give vast sums of money to insurance companies?

I do have absolute faith in our Congress's ability to screw this up beyond
all hope of repair ("FUBAR" we once called it).
Remember the old saw about a camel being a horse designed by a committee?

(Sorry to disappoint the poo poo by not launching into a neocon tirade.

Well, I don't know how y'all are going to pay for it. I guess you don't see
any social democrat countries that as universal health care as models of how
to run such a program? Having said that, every model has its problems.
There is no perfect way to run a health care program. But, I hope you can
understand how we non-Americans are aghast that you don't have equality in
health care for your citizen. I'm not saying that "we" are "better" than
"you". We just don't get it. From the outside looking in, it seems that
the "not with my money you don't" and "it ain't my problem" seems heartless
and enhances the Merc rep to outsiders as being greedy money/oil grubbers.
Of course that's not fair, because there are so many good kind American
people, probably the vast majority, in fact.

on most things.

Hint: I'm in favour of all sorts of reforms to the health care system
here. Just not the ones they're doing now, which are stupid, do
nothing to contain costs, cut Medicare (which mostly works right now
but won't if they cut all that money out of it), and will generally
cost us a shedload of money to no real gain, no matter how they're
billing it inside the beltway.

Please bear in mind, Nilita, that people are not dropping dead in the
streets here in America for lack of medical care (assuming they seek it).
And people are not being denied health coverage because of a lack of funds.
There are currently programs to provide for the poor, Medicaid being one.
Free clinics are everywhere.
And our emergency rooms are pretty much the standard source of treatment for
those lacking insurance.
Have you not been following the efforts currently going on in Congress to
bring about universal health care in this country?
We may not be moving at the pace you foreigners would like but we are
moving.

Of course I've been following the events. And it isn't a matter of how

there is just so much ugly resistance to the concept of universal health

Kudos, Conway, for illustrating the point so well:
in a vicious political battle which exposes America
as _the only_ industrialised Western Democracy
_not_ to provide for Health Care for its citizens, you
take a belligerent tone with someone who hails from
a Civilised Nation - one *renowned* for its Peaceful
Ways, incidentally; one which US Americans were
*pretending to be from* when travelling in Europe and
the rest of the world during the Bush Years - and you
berate her for trying to impose "Thought Control."

You're a wilfully-ignorant knuckle-dragging moron
Conservatard worthy of the John Birch Society and
Pat Buchanan.
