I've been warned by Claire not to be too partisan as it is seemingly not a
good example to show to the kids! I'm getting the hotdogs and bud ready
though I haven't gone as far as buy a US flag. One of the good things in my
life is that I was too wee to remember 1966 - one of the bad things is I
wasn't around to see the US humiliate England in the 1950s. Mind you this is
a different situation. The US are a much better team now. I think they will
be up for it.

A defeat masterminded by a Scottish manager and Scottish captain.

Of course the USA can beat England, that is not in doubt, however if
both teams play to the best of their ability then it is a no-brainer.
5-2 to England sounds right.

England scoring five goals against the USA or winning said game by 3 goals
sounds a bit optimistic from an English viewpoint. In fact scoring five
goals against anyone in the group stages sounds a bit optimistic as they've
never managed it against anyone before. Normally they don't even manage to
score 5 goals in all three groups stage games combined. They got 5 goals in
the 3 games in 1998 and managed 6 in 1982 and they got 6 goals from their 2
games in 1954 but that involved a 4-4 draw with Belgium. Likewise they have
only ever won by three goals in the groups stages on one occassion which was
in 1986 when they beat Poland 3-0.

What made me hit the stats was just that I can't remember England ever being
that impressive in the group stages. 2006 = only 3 goals in all 3
games..............2002 = only 2 goals in all 3
games....................1990 only 2 goals..........................1986
only 3 goals.....................1970 only 2 goals..............1966 only 4
goals................1962 only 4 goals..................1958 only 4
goals...............1950 only 2 goals.

Even Scotland has managed to knock 5 goals past someone :-) New Zealand in
1982. I know cos I was there. Mind you at least the boring white shites
normally qualify for the next round which is far mroe than can be said for
us!

My apologies for not being clear enough, I wasn't saying that England
would win by 3 goals but on paper that would appear to be the
difference between the 2 teams.

Who is this Wayne Rooney fellow?
The local press describe him as quite the potty mouth.
I understand the refs are even training so as to recognize Mister Rooney's
English obscenities.
As though they would card the shinning light of Saxon Soccer)

And English comments to all this seems to be "Well, that's Rooney for you.
He is ever so dedicated to winning".

He's one of England's top players and potentially one of the real greats.
Ugly little bugger though! He's already been sent off in a major finals.
He's very competative, and that is part of what makes him the player he is,
but he's always near the line of going over the limit.

Out of curiosity, I turned on the game at the 33 minute mark, England looked
quite comfortable with a one nothing lead. It it now 38 and change and the
US just scored the tie goal. The English goalkeeper it appears, just let in
the easiest shot in world cup history !

I trust someone is checking to see if any money transfers are being made to

And those angry bees in the background.......

Every two years! I have the European Championships to deal with too. I have
calmed things down a bit. There was a European Championships a few years
back where England lost all three of their group games and we were down in
Norfolk at the time. Her family got fairly peeved at me being so pleased
about it all. One of Claire's cousins said to his friend, who just happened
to be Welsh "Don't you think it is terrible that he wants anyone to beat
England know matter who they are?" The Welsh guy shrugged his shoulder
and said "Not really...we all feel the same in Wales"

For which Mister Green apparently is to pay dearly.

I'm no export on feetsball BTW, but I enjoyed watching the game.
It seemed to me, by and large, well played.
I began to understand the importance of position when moving the ball down
field.
I saw the intricate manuvers needed to position the ball near the opponent's
goal.
When those guys get near the goal, they strike like snakes.

I just might become a fan of this grand sport.
And I expect an upsurge of interest in the game from my fellow citizens.

In a footballing sense Britain doesn't really exist. England are England and
Scotland are Scotland and it is the oldest and one of the most bitter
rivalries in the sport. So making comments to Brits in general when talking
about support for the England football team and their fans' opinions on
Rooney doesn't make any real sense.

The majority of people I know (certainlt those Scots who follow football)
would like to see 'anyone' beat England. This is the first major tournament
for a while where there hasn't been unmpteen UK media stories moaning at
Scots for not supporting England. The most glaring example I can remember
was in Jedburgh when a German family sheepishly came into the bar to watch a
Germany v England game. It took them about 5 minutes to realise that the
vast majority of folk in the bar wanted Germany to win as much as they did.

You're perfectly correct the English know fine the difference between
Britain and England. Always have done of course but nowadys they are also
more likely to use English rather than British symbols etc. For instance up
until the 1990s the Union Flag predominated amongst England fans but now you
hardly see them at all. They are bedecked in the Cross of St George instead.
I've even heard my wife's English relatives moan about the national anthem -
suggesting they should use their own like the other British teams too. I
have noticed that the fans still sing Rule Britannia though so there is
still a wee discrepancy there. I suppose no-one has told them that the words
were written by a Scot :-)

I remember a game in the 86 world cup when Scotland played a particularly
dirty unsprtsmanlike Uruguay side. In the news reports it continually showed
an interview with one Scottish fan who fumed

"I hate Uruguay..........I mean I really hate Uruguay...........this is how
much I hate Uruguay..........if they were playing England - I'd want England
to win!"

Just about everyone in Scotland understood that to a tea................many
would only want England to beat someone if they really despised the other
team. And not too many many despise any other team that much.

Not at all asshole. It is clearly you who have fucked up. I originally
said that it was more than possible that the USA could beat England,
despite that fact on paper they are a "better" team. You made some
sort of facile joke about paper and grass, covering up your complete
lack of knowledge about the sport. Do yourself a favour stick to
something you know about. I do realise that narrows down your options
to the size of pinhead.

BTW you do realise that the USA did not fact beat England?

Do you have any comprehension skills at all Fred? Your recent replies/
posts suggest that you struggle in this area. Your poor attempt at
sarcasm is very weak indeed.

Does the truth hurt?

I'll comment on that once I have seen truth in one of your posts.

Perhaps this is a reincarnation of old double P.

You ought to improve your reading skills because they are clearly
lacking. Please show me where I stated that the USA could not beat
England, in fact I stated the opposite. What is really quite pathetic
here is the likes of yourself and your mate Fred jumping and up down
like excited school kids because of the draw, and then saying "I told
you so". Looks as though what I did wrong was object to your childish
behaviour. I am really quite sorry.

Where did I lie? Bilge is what you do best, in fact it is the only
thing you do. Have fun with your mate Conway.

And there we have it, no chance at all of mature discussion with more
"weak sarcasm" from dull Fred. You don't even like or understand the
game yet feel free to pontificate and pass judgement. Laughable at
best.
