I've been playing with 'fancy', ie non-standard fonts,
and I've got a totally new page at :
http://www.ian-stewart.eu/irs_xmas.php

It seems to work in Firefox 3.5.6, Opera 1.10
and surprise, surprise even IE 8.0.6001

Would you let me know if there are any problems
with the page rendering correctly and, if so, which
browser and version ?

It may not work in older versions of IE !

Ta muchly !

That's only going to work if the viewer has the 'Snowdrift' font
installed, and I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that about 95% of
all punters won't have it. You have a couple of choices:
- make the text you want to display in the alternate font an image
- Use sIFR (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Inman_Flash_Replacement
- Use FLIR (FaceLift Image Replacement, not Forward Looking InfraRed) -
http://facelift.mawhorter.net/
- suggest to your viewers that they download and install Snowdrift -

Hello there. Just taking a wee peek in at SCS after a couple of weeks
neglect (shame on me). Your Xmas page looks fine on my various browsers,
albeit in linux. When the missus gets her new Windows 7 PC on Christmas
Day (shhhh!), I'll have her fire up the same page in IE to see what
happens.

Jings, you've been busy at the coding, eh? A smashing effort! Can I place
a link to your website on mine?

Speaking of which, have now thoroughly updated my previously awful PHP
calendar at the address below, in a vain attempt to make it more
internationally useful. It's by no means perfect, but if anyone wants
their particular location included in the drop down list, or any special
days highlighted, just let me know. No hamlet too small; no event too
trivial. :-)

IE7.0 on XP and it works just fine (snow
drifting down and so forth) and I *do not*
have the Snowdrift Font installed...

Works identically in both IE8 and FF3.5.6 as far as I can tell.
I also tried IE7 everything is fine except the Atomz search box, the text
is stretched wider than the box.

Agreed. But it's loaded onto the server . . . . . . .

Ooops !! I hadn't uploaded it !!!
<smacks wrist>

I'm using the '@font-face' command and there's
both a .ttf and .eot file for the font face.

Sorry folks.

Errr, I hadn't uploaded the font to the server.

It *should* work without the local machine having

See the test page at :

OK, I've just tried with IE6, IE7 and IE8, they all render the same,
without the snowy font. IE6 and 7 have problems with the text on the search
button.
FF is fine although some of the fonts on your test page don't render.

One further comment, the falling snowflakes quickly get lost against a
white background

It's just a thought, but is your browser set to override/replace web page
CSS fonts with locally defined one(s)? This is easy to do on Firefox, but
not sure about IE.

I _used_ to eat all the pies, but this cycling-to-work lark has burnt them
off. Now I can start the whole process again. Pie owners beware. :-)

MoolBoran looks different, but other than size and colour, all the
others look the same in IE7 ... Windows Vista Home Premium.

Would it make a difference on IE8 ... Windows 7?

I've sent you a screen shot of what I get on both machines.
One has Windows & IE8 and the other Vista and IE7

Oooops, that page was changed today.

Maybe by next year, there will be a common standard
for embedded fonts.

No, I don't think so.

IE doesn't recognise a .ttf (True Type Font) which has been
recognised by Windows since 3.1. It needs an .eot font and
MS have a free program called WEFT to convert the former
to the latter. Sometimes it works . . .

It's just something I was playing around with.

I use Firefox and XP and there is no difference in the fonts- just the
sizes
and colours. Lots of tables at the bottom

Same with IE8

Looks to work fine in Chrome, as well.

Is that Google Chrome the OS or Google Chrome the Browser?

It looks to be working correctly on Chrome 3.0 browser.

Ok, now that I know what it's *supposed* to look like:

Google Chrome 3.0 - Falling snow and scrolling banner work. Search
box is the right size for the text. No snow effect on the red letters
and no twinkly lights or subsequent text (big blank area on the page).

Same look in IE, so it appears to be something more basic on the
machine than individual browser settings that is preventing it from
working.
