Sheila, thanks for the above link. Ian did a wonderful job on his website. I
read a lot of what he wrote and some of what his sister wrote, and it was
very interesting. Ian was a wonderful photographer. His photos are
beautiful. The view from the top of your driveway is spectacular. Was your
house behind the trees in the foreground? Do you still live there or is that
where you used to live? It looks like a very remote area. Were you born in
Sutherland? I can't imagine living in a house with a view like that. I don't
know if I could adjust, but would love to be there on holiday. Sutherland is
described in most sites as being very sparsley populated with beautiful
beaches and hills.
One of my relatives just outside Dunfermline lives close to a loch and when
I visited him, I said to him you have a lovely view from your back window
with the loch so close. It doesn't have high hills like in the highlands,
but beautiful just the same.
I liked growing up in Dunfermline. It gave me an appreciation of old castles
and old architecture and old history as Dunfermline was once the ancient
capital of Scotland and has the ruins of Dunfermline palace where King
Malcolm of Scotland and Queen Margaret of Norway once lived. Also ruins of a
monastery across the road from the palance ruins. Dunfermline 12 century
abbey is in same area where Robert the Bruce's body is buried. I passed
those places every day on my way to high school but I didn't give much
thought to the ruins. I had to go back to realize the historical influence.
I took a lot of photos last time, mostly of Dunfermline as I was only there
2 weeks.I would like to go back.
The highlands have quite different scenery than other parts of Scotland. In
some maps Fife is described as being in the central/east scotland which is
how I would describe it. Its different from the highlands and different from
the Lowlands.
Thanks Sheila, for the link to Ian's website. Its fanstastic with great
pictures and information. He wrote of anncestry on his mothers side who came
from Kilmichael Glassary in Argyll. My father was born in that area. He and
family moved to Fife when he was a boy. So that was an interesting part for
me as the towns and villages there were small. Maybe they even knew each
other.
I have seen a few parts of Ian O's website before, but it was quite a while
ago. He was not very old when he died- unfortunate.
BTW, wasn't there another Ian who used to sometimes post Scottish scenery
photos here - Ian Smith?
