Hamish MacBeth vs Hollywood Culture

Daniel Boyle's BBC-America television series "Hamish MacBeth" is a landmark
event, not just in Scottish culture, but in Western culture. It is a shame
more motion pictures about "urban meets rural" cultures can't have better
insight into the depths of this conflict. This is largely due to the
ethnicity of funding sources for motion pictures in the United States being
overwhelmingly Jewish (see evidence below) with other urban ethnicities
running close behind in prominence. Severe cultural bias with attendant
conflicts of interest are inevitable when "diversity" means one or a few
ethnicities get a lock on control points for other cultures.

Boyle's mythic rural town extends well beyond the boarders of Scotland. This
is also a theme of Garrison' Keillor's "Lake Woebegone" with its "Norwegian
Bachelor Farmers". Keillor is an unabashed Norwegian himself and shows,
along with Hamish MacBeth, a tiny bit of what rural ethnicities have been
missing by allowing their culture to be dominated by Jews and other urban
ethnicites. The city is sexier than the farm or the fishing port. It is a
sad fact that a significant amount of farm land in the US Midwest is leaving
families that have held it for generations -- not just from farm failures,
but also because there are no more generations of those families. A lot of
families south of Minnesota were of Scotch-Irish heritage. The head of Clan
Campbell, Diramid Campbell, wrote an essay titled "The American Clearances"
about the recent generation's disposession as an aspect of the resurgence of
clan identity. Scottish Americans and other diaspora Scots in similar
predicaments have a serious need to reacquire their roots. Things may be
changing, particularly as the Internet makes it possible for people to
establish profitable "electronic cottages". "electronic villages" in rural
Scotland for diaspora Scots who wanted to repatriate might be a way for
their more stubborn cousins to make some money and quarantine the bad habits
and unrealistic expectations that their prodigals picked up while in the
colonies ;-). Of course the urban Scots in Scotland are also detached from
their roots, and have similar needs -- and bring with them similar
liabilities -- so merely living is "Scotland" is no guarantee of
"rootedness". I dare say many Scotch-Irish in Appalachia and rural Scots in
Nova Scotia are more Scottish than most who live in the cities of Scotland.

The broadcast on BBC-America of Hamish MacBeth is at least as important in
that respect than was Gibson's "Braveheart" -- especially as it deals with
contemporary, if a bit mythical, rural Scots and the conflicts of identity
they endure at the hand of US culture, but also at the hand of urban culture
in general.

In many ways the series "Hamish MacBeth" centered on the moment when Alex,
the princess of the villiage being seduced by the city, proposed to Hamish,
the Sheriff from the city being seduced by the villiage.

The town had thought it lost what might be considered its crown jewel to the
city; and here she was, returning, not simply to Hamish, but to her
community that so desperately needed her. Hamish was in a position of
responsibility, not simply to Amy's heart, but to the community over which
he was given protective authority -- and therefore likely to be accorded
more attention by the young women. If he was not careful, he might lose
this opportunity to welcome Alex back home.

Alex was symbolic of the situation that Boyle made into a theme of the
series, which was the shortage of young women due to the attractions of
money in the city.

In the first half of the series, the over-arching romantic tension is
between Hamish and Alex, a Lochdubh female who left for a career in the
city. In the second half of the series, the over-arching romantic tension
is between Hamish and Isobel, a Lochdubh female who left for a career in the
city. At no time during the series was a young man leaving a young woman
behind in Lochdubh for a career in the city. There was, however, an
_explicit_ statement of the gender imbalance by Boyle's teleplay when he had
MacCrae Sr. say to MacCrae Jr. that MacCrae Jr. should be more romantically
aggressive toward the single mother brought to Lochdubh for protection by
Isobel, due to the shortage of _women_ in Lochdubh.

It is rather difficult to escape Boyle's "politics", if one can call such
mythic story telling by such a profane noun, when the climax of the series
involves the return of the Stone of Destiny in the return of Isobel as part
of a virtual human sacrifice of two brothers of Lochdubh which nearly
destroys both Hamish and Isobel as well. That Boyle went to such extremes
to bring Isobel back to Hamish from the city speaks well of Boyle's
awareness and compassion for the difficulties faced by small town Scots.

We can debate the demography of rural emigration as it stands today, but I
think you'll agree that the ratio of female to male rural emigration is far
higher today than it has been historically, and the negative impact on
fertility in rural communities is far greater -- necessitating sometimes
massive importation of labor to keep those communities alive, regardless of
heritage.

As for Alex's influence on the community, as one of its leading daughters:

Look at the hysteria over Princess Diana. I have a hard time discounting
the impact that "nobility" has. Young women are, unfortunately, as
fashion-conscious as ever. If the "best" of a town's young women are
dedicating their lives in a particular way, they influence many others in
the same direction. The needs of a community continue across the immediate,
day-to-day, practicalities and encompass the generations, including children
being born and raised in, of and by the community. If the young women
leave, the community withers and dies a slow, sad death.

Continuity of the generations was, by the way, key to the climax of the
series when TV John's father appears to tell Hamish that Hamish and Isobel
would need for thousands of "Pampers" despite their agreement to "have no
children". Ewan MacGregor says he would be happy to spend the rest of his
career working with Danny Boyle. I believe Daniel Boyle, the screen writer
for Hamish MacBeth is a different Danny Boyle, but with story telling like
that, I can MacGregor's sentiment might apply to Daniel Boyle.

As for what I think Boyle could actually have done differently in the story
of Alex's return:

Hamish had not proposed marriage to Alex. He was not engaged to her.
Hence, the necessity of a public promise of marriage between them, if they
were to be married. This same absence of a public promise gave Isobel's
heart, as well as Hamish's, the formal freedom to seek each other out.
Alex's absence was not even required, but it did emphasize the informal
aspect of the situation.

That Isobel and Hamish exercised this formal freedom would not have been a
surprise in a more traditional culture, particularly given Alex's indefinite
absence.

This is what Hamish should, somehow, have said to Alex, because it is only
when that public promise has been made that the community can truly prepare
itself for the momentous changes that take place in the once sexual
intercourse consummates a relationship within the community.

This is the tradition of marriage among the Scots. The variations
introduced by more cosmopolitan standards were portrayed quite well in the
series, as were the dire consequences to a people of simple country heart.

Alex's proposal of marriage, even though it had come after sexual
intercourse between them, and even though it came from the woman instead of
from the man, and even though it came from a woman upon return from her
exploits abroad, rather than from a man upon return from his, was,
nevertheless, an appeal to the strength and wisdom of that tradition.

Hamish had, however, a deeper role to which he had to answer as protector of
the community.

Just as the role of community protector is more ancient than the institution
of marriage so the role that Hamish had taken on as community protector had
a tradition that required him to put the welfare of his community above
his own.

It was in that deeper tradition that he was least prepared to respond to
Alex's return -- and it was in that deeper tradition that he failed most
miserably.

This character flaw was not unique to Hamish. Like all community protectors
steeped in cosmopolitan values, they have had their communal instincts
suppressed or mutilated to such a degree that it has now invaded individual
relationships, typically appearing as though the men, not only of our
communities, but of our very families, have become weak and unreliable in
their roles as protectors of integrity. Perhaps the most visible symbol of
this decay, paraded around in a very public and theatrical way, was the
First Family of the President of the United States, although I see Bill
Clinton's situation as a charade via which the masses were provided a
scape-goat for far deeper difficulties with civilization.

Indeed, the pervasiveness of this flaw is a big part of what motivates young
women, such as Isobel and Alex, leave the simple rural communities in which
flaws, like most things in those communities, are most obvious, and seek out
urban communities in which the sophisticates are far more adept at
maintaining critical illusions. Chief among those sophistications, by the
way, is broadcast television programming itself -- one of the main reasons
that "Hamish MacBeth", with its even modest exposure of these issues, is so
unique and important.

So, to at long last, a actual course of action Boyle might have scripted to
more compassionately welcome Alex back from her "Sex in the City":

Although I realize it would have been out of character for Hamish, and that
this scene exposed the fatal, if endearing, weaknesses in that character
which I've probed above, I think hindsight tells us (or at least me) that
Hamish should have responded, first, to Alex's attempt to return to the
community, as evidenced by her proposal. His response should have been to
the situation; addressing the community:

"Alex seeks return to Lochdubh. This calls for celebration!"

Hamish should have then _immediately_ excused himself to attend to the
urgent preparation for the festivities and _immediately_ have asked the
elders of the community for assistance with the difficult situation in which
they found themselves. It would be easy to exclude Alex from these
proceedings as the guest of honor.

Only after Alex had been duly welcomed, in accordance with the wishes of the
community elders, should Hamish have responded to Alex's proposal of
marriage and he most definitely should _not_ have mislead her about the
events surrounding her return, least of all events of the heart.

In the espisode after Alex's death, "No Man Is An Island" we saw how
integral Hamish was to the community of Lochdubh -- that he had indeed "gone
native" and dropped his identification with the central government
authorities in the most radical acts of loyalty to the locals.

Like many of the suicides that are sanctioned in most traditional societies
Hamish's instinct was far from the pop-psychobabble slander of such acts as
"selfish" -- it was to atone for what he saw as a dishonorable act. His
heroism with the elder woman is what redemed his honor and therefore the
value of his life.

Without Alex's death as a conceit, I'm not sure what Boyle could have done
to explore this character development in Sheriff Hamish MacBeth -- and it
was, indeed, a crucial character development to the theme of the series.
I'm sure he could have found another crisis of similar depth without killing
Alex.

Back to that theme:

Some would say that the main reason that young women leave rural communities
for the liberations of the city is to escape stifling traditional roles in
which they find themselves cast in the more rustic environments.

This has been a theme of urban counter-culture promoted via mass media
broadcast in the homes in which rural girls, or first-generation suburban
girls of the post WW II baby boom, were raised. As the POST-counter-culture
mass media event "Hamish MacBeth" tells us, the experience with this
abandonment of tradition has led many to return to their roots with new
wisdom won of terrible hardship (exemplified by Hamish, Isobel, Alex and
Alex's father) as well as willing sacrifices, such as Hamish and Alex's
father on the Island, and TV John at the end, leading to the return of the
ultimate symbol of tradition: The Stone of Destiny.

Forgive me if I wax a bit, but this is an issue to which I've given as much
thought as it deserves considering not only the centrality of the proposal
scene to "Hamish MacBeth, but the importance of that television series to
the post-counter-culture West and the enormous weight Western culture
wields, rightly or wrongly, in the evolving relations between
post-counter-cultures. It is one thing to produce an erudite book for the
intellectuals about "post modernism" -- it is quite another to produce an
internationally broadcast, engaging television series with serious depth at
a critical point in world history. The fact that few people recognize the
importance of this series doesn't detract from its impact.

Again:

Hamish MacBeth is a landmark event, not just in Scottish culture, but in
Western culture. It is a shame other motion pictures and series about
"urban meets rural" cultures can't have the level of insight into the depth
of this conflict exhibited by Hamish MacBeth, but this is largely due to the
ethnicity of funding sources for motion pictures in the United States being
overwhelmingly Jewish with other urban ethnicities running close behind.
Severe cultural bias is inevitable -- and it is such biases in media that
bias the affected cultures.

bought CBS for $36 billion. Vaulting over Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.,
Viacom became the world's third-largest media conglomerate, mating CBS,
Infinity Broadcasting, and 34 TV stations with Paramount Pictures, MTV,
Nickelodeon, UPN, and Blockbuster. Even before the merger closed, Viacom's '

As a humorous illustration of this bias, I've thrown together a little Perl
script that generates parodies of summaries of screen plays taylored to get
funding from Hollywood executives. The program may need a little work to
make it more believable, but the humor exhibited by these "executive
summaries" is largely the result of the incredibly self-indulgent Hollywood
reality to which they to mockingly pander:

Hardly Ballykissangel bandwagon. B was written by one of the old
'That's Life' presenters, Kiernan somebody, forget which one, and
first appeared in 1996ish.

Hamish Macbeth was created in 1985 by M C Beaton, a Scottish
(Glaswegian) writer. It therefore significantly predates B as well as
that other oft claimed but equally erroneous 'bandwagon', 'Northern
Exposure'.

My suspicion is that the true antecedants are more likely to be the
films 'Local Hero' 1983 (a couple of years before the first book) and
'The Wicker Man' 1973, but you would need to ask Marion herself about
that.

believes non-Jews are too stupid to think for themselves, and will
thus fall under the spell of the Wascally Juice? Is that it?

Are we simply too dumb to reason on our own, Mr. Bowery? Are we
completely incapable of thinking, as _well_ is incapable of earning
our way into the boardrooms of the world?

Transport technology, like any technology, has its environmental side-
effects that must be considered from the perspective of the evolutionary
history of the ecosystems affected by the technology. It is hard to over-
state the importance of transportation technology coupled with
environmental control infrastructures that allow radical mixing of
ecologies across climates. Liberalized immigration policies without
regard to these technological side-effects is irresponsible in the
extreme and is a property of all empires, but more importantly of
post-Guttenberg empires in which Jews wield disproportionate
influence.

Specifically:

Jews are denying the holocaust their immigration liberalizations
have caused other peoples. This is particularly unforgivable since

Jews had spread to all corners of the world could the Messiah come,
and that in a declaration that formed the backbone of the United

Ach the book may have been written whenever but there is no doubt the TV
programme was shot to a formula. A Sunday night lightweight comedy drama
with a city guy going to some back of beyond and interacting with some
rather peculiar locals, apart from the leading lady, who is eminantly
sensible and serious. Maybe I was giving Ballykissangel rather too much
credit, after all there is that other cultural classic Heartbeat which
precedes them all. London cop goes to live in the rural north with lots of
funny characters who don't exactly respect the letter of the law! Even
Monarch of the Glen has the laird returning from exile in London and
wondering how he'll cope with all these bumpkins, who often get the better
of him anyway. To me they are all the same, with only the degree of
tweeness seperating them. Saying that I rather enjoyed Hamish.

Well you are eminantly more sensible than me in that dept. I read a few
paragraphs. At least if Akins is going to say something he says it in less
than 2000 words, and even if you don't agree with it at least you can
understand the bloody thing.

If I were not open about the weaknesses I see in our own people McVay (being

Heartbeat (which is considerably harder to find on the web than Hamish
Macbeth) first started in 1990, well after most of the Hamish Macbeth
books were written. Also, the tv atmosphere was completely different.
Ballykissangel has a similar atmosphere to Hamish Macbeth, but is the
follower, and not as good IMO.
