Is Mick Tucker still alive? He was the androgynous one.

Am I right in thinking 'Coco' was the first Sweet hit single? It had
the chorus 'Papa rumbo rumbo hey papa Joe coconut.' Was that Sweet? Or
was that New World? Were New World the band who had someone jailed for
trying to fix the playlist? If they were, whatever happened to the
bloke who got jailed? They sang 'Kara Kara Kim By Ay' I recall.

Could either band be considered 'Celtic'?

Fwooer ! How old are you ;-)

Yes, Coco was their first hit but you've quoted a line from 'Papa Joe'.

My big sister had the single of Kara Kara. Remember 'Tom Tom Turn Around' ?

Now you've depressed me, made me feel old, AND put a song in my head that always
sticks around for days at a time. <sigh>.

I would imagine that for "renal failure" you could read
"major alcohol problem". I saw him on a documentary a year
or two ago and he couldn't keep his hands still.
A sure sign (medical fact #374).

Shame The Sweet and Chuck Berry never got together to
record "Little Willy's Ding-A-Ling".

Is there an alt.music.songs.tumescent?

*My* big sister used to get Disco 45 magazine, and that had all the
lyrics in. Because of this I can still remember sizeable chunks of
'Little Willy' and 'Wigwam Bam'. And yes, who could forget 'Tom Tom
Turn Around'?

The great New World mystery remains unsolved: did the lead singer do a
stretch in the slammer? And just where is he now?

As I remember from my days of listening to Radio Luxembourg, they had
another single out before Coco called Wig Wam Bam. I don't remember if
it was a hit though.

:)..sweet did IMO one of the best Heavy metal albums of the
seventies..(yes..HM..) called 'Sweet FA.'..just as good as anything by
Deep purple..(well..nearly!). some of their later singles..(Love is like
oxygen for eg) were much better than the glam stuff.I saw a concert by
sweet (minus Brian) at the marquee a few years back..wonderfull stuff.

Weren't they the ones who scammed Hughie Green's "talent" show, Opportunity
Knocks, by getting their pals to send in hundreds of votes for them?

Hey! I found a Paper Lace record in amongst my parent's records.
My Mum said she saw them in Accrington. It's signed, you know.

The Sweet's later rock stuff was much better than their glam stuff,
especially some of the songs on "Level Headed". What were they
like when Connelly departed?

Absurd.

No serious student of Sweet could suggest that Wigwam Bam was the band's
first record. At least three others pre-dated it.

Can't help you there old chum. I think you'll find that that was couple
of years later. Did it not follow 'Billy Don't Be a Hero', which was
surely 1973? Blockbuster was 1972, and Little Willy was released before
that, probably 1971.

I can oblige with a chorus of 'Jeepster' or a little snatch of 'Cos I
Luv You', if it helps. If you wish something from a still earlier era,
would a few words from 'New York Mining Disaster' help?

Yep, but he was the drummer. The bass player is apparently living in LA
and of a rather impressive girth.

I was in a band that had a single produced by the guitarist Andy Scott.
A few years ago we went out after recording for a very strange timewarp
night watching a reformed and very eldery Mud.

Mick and Andy were sat next to me and when someone said 'do you want a
drink Andy? Mick?' it all began to sound like the intro to the seminal
'Ballroom Blitz'!

Andy's a pretty good producer and an excellent guitarist - and he had
some *top* stories from Seventies!

I have a Video of them playing at the Marquee ..round about 1990. Bloody
brilliant stuff...some of the old 'hits' , played in a punk/heavy metal
style..(much better than the originals IMO) and a lot of stuff from the
'Sweet FA' album..a truly rocking album IMO..they didnt have Brian
then...cant remember the singers name..he sounded a bit like Ian Gillan.
'Love is like Oxygen' was a classic ..

What about that touching and emotional song "Billy Don't be a Hero",
which deals with the sorrow and fear felt by loved ones who are left on
the "Home Front" in time of conflict?

"Billy, don't be a hero,
Don't be a fool with your life;
Billy, don't be a hero,
Come back and make me your wife.
And as Billy started to go
She said 'Keep your pretty head low,
Billy, don't be a hero
Come back to me'."

A moving plea, I think we'll all agree.

Oh, and he dies in the end.

Well, to quote the "Daily Record" Connolly and McManus grew up
together, but didn`t realise they were blood relatives until they
became adults.
So it certainly seems that he was Scottish, doesn`t it?

Felicity Kendal was on the scene long before Suzi Quattro. I always
fancied Mo Tucker (drummer with the VU), never having heard of Mick
of that ilk. Well after my time, I'm afraid.

I am related to someone who was dragged to the theatre one night,
kicking and screaming. One of the players was F Kendal, and she took
all her clothes off..... Anyone know which play it was?

Last time I heard of Suzi Q, she was clay pigeon shooting on some
dreadful game show. She did NOT remove her clothes, AFAIA, though
she was wearing leathers.

Jimmy Saville was quite the character. He dyed his hair black on one side
and white on the other on Top of the Pops. He ran marathons to raise money
for charity, and was an all-round nice chap. He got an MBE (OBE?) from
Queen Lizzie for his charity work. He always smoked huge stogies and had a
couple of heart attacks last I heard.

Adrian Street and Bobby Barnes used to be everyones favourite baddies in
tag matches. A fight between Street/Barnes and the Royal brothers would cause
my usually placid granny to put on a performance worthy of Rab C Nesbitt
and send everyone else in the room running for cover. I can still hear her

Other famous TV personalities who should do some wrestling include:
Keith Chegwin, Noel Edmonds, Chris Evans - yeah, won't be so smug once
Giant Haystacks has done a bodyslam on you, will you, you speccy ginger

Whilst on the subject, wasn't there a wrestler in the '70's called
Catweasle, who modelled himself on the popular magical time-travelling
character of children's TV fame (complete with toad perched on the
ringside)? Or is it another of my sad delusions?

Bloody right. Bert Royal did his back in fighting them; bad backs were
a gettout for any wrestler, Les Kellett was always "retiring" with a
back problem. All for entertaining the likes of you and me. I wonder
where they are now.

Brian Glover (the writer and professional northerner) used to wrestle
under the pseudonym of Aaron somebody? What was it?

Aaron Copeland. Bit of a polymath our Brian. In addition to wrestling
and acting he is also a composer of musical scores.

And with Alan Ginsberg?

They'll be telling us next that Siegfried Sassoon had a hair-salon and
that Rudyard Kipling 'makes exceedingly good cakes'.

By the way, is it true that Camilla Parker Bowles used to play up front
for QPR? It certainly looked like her.

Good question. Perhaps we can get back on track with some amusing Brian
Connelly anecdotes. Who's going to get the ball rolling? Now, as I was
saying, I had that Kendo Nagasaki in the back of my cab once...

Which reminds me. Who was the guy that always wore a mask and those he was
fighting always threatened, but never actually did, to pull it off and expose
him?

And I believe Kendo Nagasaki, mentioned elsewhere, also made a novely record.

Oh, I see... you've got something against wrinklies toodling around in
Volvos, eh? I thought this newsgroup covered that topic awhile back and
it was decided that I had every right to take up every lane of the motor
way and go as slow as I want in order to prevent the engine from falling
