DNA project aims to count Scots redheads
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-20237511

I must say that I prefer redhead than "a person with two copies of a
recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R
protein".

"By analysing a version of the gene in Neanderthals, the scientists found
that they also have sported fiery locks. We found a variant of MC1R in
Neanderthals"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7062415.stm

Hmm, challenging...

Enlightening. I wondered why the denizens of the
movie "Braveheart" had low brows, eye ridges, bad
manners, propensity to swear, always brawling,
ugly as possible, unkempt, lived underground,
hairy, smelly, drank like two fish, no fashion
sense, and much more besides.

Just as civilised world suspected, the Scotch are descended from
Neanderthals!

****"Braveheart is the very movie to see if one truly wishes to understand
the Scots.

Do you think I included a link to source got nothing? If you had read the
full aticle you would have seen that I cheated, as I do sometimes but
always with the source. The full sentence is:

"(We found a variant of MC1R in Neanderthals) which is not present in
modern humans, but which causes an effect on the hair similar to that seen
in modern redheads,"

LOL right back at you! Always read the link, I don't include them for
nothing.

Quite likely that early peoples at the North West periphery of Europe would be less affected by waves of migrations from the south and east and retain more of the Neanderthal and other early human DNA and characteristics. I have 2.8 percent, 0.7 percent more than my non-Scottish wife!(more sample date required).

Rather than looking at one characteristic,it could be more meaningful if we had some data on the similarities between Scots and Irish and Homo Neanderthalensis.

The question of similarities between modern humans being due simply to overlap and not mixing via amorous contact is IMHO no longer credible. It should become clearer when more of the big players apply new emerging computational techniques to the increasing body of data on Neanderthals, Denisovians and other peoples.
