Think about how much ink and paper have been saved over the centuries by
omitting leaving out the superfluous "e". It would come to *dozens* of
pounds/marks/whatever.

Superfluity is in the eye of the beholder. I can think of a thing or two my
wife thinks are superfluous that I hold very dearly.
