Your mother is really a most interesting person. I have no great eye
for painting, apart from the more "photographic" styles and I'm having
some difficulty following her mindset. I do like "Scaurhead". probably
because I can understand what it means, and actually it has a wild
style about it that I find very attractive.

Thanks for your kind words Micheil. A lot of people find my mother's
paintings "difficult"... I at last persuaded her to say something about
her art a few weeks ago, as follows:
"People ask me why I painted that landscape, why it's angry or sad ...
I'm not trying to paint pretty landscapes, that doesn't interest me. I'm
interested in using colour to express the emotion of the landscape. You
know the Australians and their idea of the Dreamworld? I'm trying to
create a Scottish Dreamworld!"
The small scans hardly do her work justice... they are glorious big
colourful bits of hardboard and canvas covered in oil paint... I'll post
when she next exhibits and you can see for yourself.
Most of her paintings are of trees, woodland scenes etc except for the
likes of Scaurhead and the series on the Border Ballads which she
started in the 60's at Art School and finished in the 90's having
produced me and 3 other new people in between!

Has she been influenced by Jenny McLean by any chance?
Jenny is perhaps more representational than abstract but the pallets
and styles are very similar.

Took me a while to get a reply but my mum and dad both claim never to
have heard of Jenny McLean. Who is/was she? I'd be interested to see her
work now to see if I agree with you....
