Subject: Navigating the Romanian Resource Servers

Last update: Mar 25 New gopher at gopher.nbnet.nb.ca

Hi/Buna:

We hope you will be able to convey this information to your
friends in Romania and abroad. It is very important that this
information is known to as many students, professionals and other net
users as possible.

INFORMATIONAL GROUPS

There are two informational groups about Romania:

- the newsgroup soc.culture.romanian (use newsreaders, such as nn, rn,
xvnews, xrn, to access it; learn your editors, such as vi and emacs in
order to edit your posts; talk to your sys admins, not to me, on these
issues); you don't need a subscription, just Usenet access (for
beginners, this is similar to a BBS). This is mostly an English
language group, with an international readership. As there is no
newsgroup / Usenet access presently in Romania, the interested readers
from Romania should write to Nick Sandru (explanations are given later
in this text) for using the mail -> soc.culture.romanian gateway in
order to receive the s.c.r. articles in their mail.

- the email group roma...@sep.stanford.edu, which uses only email as
its agent, administered by Alexander Mihai Popovici (mi...@sep.stanford.edu).
This is mostly a Romanian language group, running presently on a
listserv automatic server. In order to subscribe, send a message to
list...@sep.stanford.edu with only the following text:

subscribe romanians First_Name Last_Name

in the body (and not in the Subject:) of the message. Contact Mihai
only if you have problems with the automatic server. You can mail to
the other subscribers and receive (all) their messages addressed to the
list/group only after you subscribe.
___

Useful information from Nick Sandru:

"A mail -> soc.culture.romanian gateway is currently running on 'sandes.dk',
allowing people without access to Usenet news to post messages on
soc.culture.romanian. The messages posted to the e-mail address:

soc-cultur...@sandes.dk

are forwarded as news articles to the group soc.culture.romanian.

Regarding getting the group soc.culture.romanian on request: I can set up
the forwarding of s.c.r. to anyone via e-mail from 'sandes.dk'. However
you should contact your system administrator and ask him/her if you can
get access to the s.c.r. group locally, before you send a request to me.
Nick Sandru (email: n...@sandes.dk)"

Thus try to use newsreaders such as nn, rn, xvnews, xrn in order to
read soc.culture.romanian (or gophers, as described in the following).
Only if this is not successful, contact Nick Sandru.
___

Other gateways email-usenet :

In order to post an article send it in email form to one of the following
addresses:

soc-cultur...@cs.utexas.edu
soc-cultur...@news.demon.co.uk

GOPHERS

A gopher server was installed at ulise.cs.pub.ro. For
correspondence related to it, email Florin Radulescu,
flo...@ulise.cs.pub.ro. It contains Romanian news, email lists for
Romania, current status of our Free UNIX for Romania drive, list of PUB
graduates, etc, both in English and Romanian.

Florin Radulescu has installed a Romanian-only gopher at info.cs.pub.ro.
This can only be accessed with a gopher client (i.e. not with telnet).
For comments, please contact: flo...@info.cs.pub.ro.

Also try the Romanian Gopher installed by Gabriel
Climescu at mercurio.unine.ch (130.125.50.51). To some extent, this
gopher is a mirror of the PUB gopher. It is recommended to use it in
order to reduce the traffic on the PUB line.

Iulius M Nicolescu <i...@cedar.buffalo.edu> has also recently installed a
Romanian gopher at ceausescu.servtech.com (it is still under construction).

Daniel Drugea recently set up a Romanian gopher at
gopher.nbnet.nb.ca

READING soc.culture.romanian VIA GOPHERS

FILESERVERS

An informational fileserver was installed at the Central Institute
for Informatics (ICI), Bucharest.

FILESERV is a file distribution service that uses electronic mail
facilities to deliver files. To communicate with FILESERV, send an
E-mail message to:
f...@roearn.bitnet, or
f...@roearn.ici.ac.ro.

Commands are sent in the body of the message you send to FILESERV.
Several commands may be sent at one time; just put one command per line.

FILESERV Commands:

SENDME package Sends all parts of the specified package.
SENDME package.n Sends part 'n' of the specified package.

LIST [pattern] Gives brief description of all packages
matching "pattern". If pattern is omitted,
a description of all packages is sent.

HELP Sends this file.

Currently

SENDME adrese.1

sends you the Know-how list for Romania
(a list for specialists from Romania and abroad

SENDME adrese.7

sends you the email list for Romania

but verify this by getting the index with

LIST

Commands may be abbreviated. DIRECTORY is a synonym for LIST.
Problems, questions, and comments about FILESERV service on this system
should be directed to fs-...@roearn.bitnet or to
fs-...@roearn.ici.ac.ro.

Also at ICI (Research Institute of Informatics, Bucharest), there's a
list for discussions on network use that can be used for short
messages. The address is: use...@roearn.ici.ro

fields of knowledge, or just foster an open scientific dialogue, by
enlisting your availability for help/discussion on various issues, you

Quote from Tiberiu Grigoriu:

"This is an informal grouping of people from Romania, Moldova and abroad
trying to share various knowledge over the net, fax or in other means,
in order to help each other in their work and professional interests.

Our idea to link professionals from Romania and abroad seems to be
successful. We will keep this initiative open and try to do our best to
manage the growing list.

Request!
To: ALL the specialists from Romania and Moldova interested in joining our
list. The objective is to create a UNIQUE list containing both: specialists
from Romania and from abroad. I will try to group all the people on
same interes categories to be easier to find each others."

--- ROMANIAN STUDENT LIST

>From Ionut Pusca (i...@bestdpx.power-dept.pub.ro):

"STUDENT-L was initially used by Computer Science students, then
it started to spread to the whole Polytechnic University Bucharest.

Presently, the STUDENT-L is supported by four nodes, and there is work
to continue its extension. Three of the nodes are in Polytechnic
University, and the fourth is in the USA, this one being dedicated
to distribute the messages to the subscribers from abroad and to
retransmit the messages to the main server.

The list is meant to make the free circulation of information easier
and to have discussions relevant to the activities and life in
Polytechnic University of Bucharest. There are no restrictions for
any subject to be entered into, and everyone may submit subjects
(announcements, questions) to the subscribers of the list.
The list is administrated by the University students, who are the
main subscribers, but it is open for all those who want to join
them. :->

Because most of the subscribers are Romanian, most of the messages
on STUDENT-L are posted in Romanian, but English may be used as well
to post your messages, so there are no interdictions concerning
language. You may try Italian, French, German, Spanish, or even other
languages, although there won't be many who understand. :->

For the people who are from abroad who want to subscribe and receive
the messages of the list, mail to STUDENT-...@creol.ucf.edu
and in the body of the message write SUBSCRIBE student-l. For more
information, send HELP in the body of the message at the same
address; the SITES command lists all the nodes of the system.
After subscribing, in order to send messages to the list, use the
address: STUD...@creol.ucf.edu. Enjoy!"

Important: This distributed system works also as an file server,
mirroring to some extent info available on f...@roearn.ici.ro. In
order to get the index of available archived articles on all
distributed servers, send

SEND *INDEX.TXT

in the body of a message sent to STUD...@creol.ucf.edu
In order to get indexed files from the archive, send

SEND file_name

in the body of a message sent to the appropriate server.

Information related to Free Unix for Romania is available on some of
the servers.

This was really useful, and I'm sure it answered many folks' questions.
I think the article is a very good basis for a Romanian FAQ (if one
already exists, I'm sorry but I don't know about it). Most other
soc.culture.* groups have one (should I mention Hungarians ;-) ). This
would help both Romanians and non-Romanians.
Possible topics:
-what to visit in Romania
-fonts, WP software, other software
-internet resources
-history
