BUCHAREST, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Romania's President Ion Iliescu and ex-king
Michael attended a public event together for the first time on Wednesday, a
move seen as sealing a reconciliation between the exiled monarchy and the
post-communist democracy.
Stripped of his citizenship and forced to abdicate following the communist
takeover of Romania in 1947, Michael, 79, has been living in exile in
Switzerland ever since.
Iliescu, the ex-communist president who sent tanks to stop Michael from touring
the country a decade ago shortly after the 1989 overthrow of communism, called
the former monarch "Majesty" for the first time in a public address.
"This (gathering) signals a long awaited national reconciliation and marks the
return to the values of democracy," the president of the Romanian Academy,
Eugen Simion, told a meeting of officials and leading intellectuals attended by
the ex-king.
The current visit was a follow-up to one Michael made in May, when he dined
privately with Iliescu after the leftist-dominated Senate passed a law granting
him 50 percent of the president's pay, an official residence and a bodyguard.
On Wednesday Michael, flanked by Iliescu and white-robed Romanian Orthodox
Patriarch Teoctist, attended a ceremony commemorating 400 years since the death
of the 17th century ruler Mihai Viteazul, known as Michael the Brave.
In 1600 he managed to unite for the first time, albeit briefly, the regions of
Moldova, Transylvania and Tara Romaneasca that formed the basis of modern
Romania.
Both Iliescu and Michael recalled the anniversary, but the ex-king also pointed
out the distorted history Romanians have learnt during five decades of
communist rule.
"During the dark communist years such celebrations were hi-jacked by the
authorities, and people were forced to turn up," said Michael.
"Communists mentioned my name among the Romanian rulers only when they had a
special interest," Michael said, without elaborating.
The ex-king said Romanians need no longer fear that Romania's territorial
integrity was threatened as it was during Mihai Viteazul's rule by the Ottoman
Empire which controlled large parts of the Balkans.
But he warned that disunity and apathy among Romanians could still undermine
efforts the country was making to join the European Union and NATO, which he
fully backed.
Michael said he did not want to emulate his Balkan neighbour ex-king Simeon of
Bulgaria, who recently returned from decades of Spanish exile to lead a
democratic government after winning a general election.
Iliescu said recently that Michael was free to enter politics if he wished.
"I hope history will remember me as a Romanian commoner," Michael said.
