BUCHAREST (Dec. 29) XINHUA - The World Bank confirmed it had granted a
5-million-U.S.-dollar loan for cultural
programs in Romania, Romania's Minister of Culture Ion Caramitru said Tuesday.
"It is the only cultural project in the world the World Bank will finance in
1999," Caramitru stressed, adding that the money
would be allocated for the restoration of Romanian historical sites.
Thus, 2.2 million U.S. dollars will be allotted for the restoration of the
Brancusi complex in the city of Tirgu Jiu, birthplace [sic]
of the world-famous sculptor Constantin Brancusi. The money left will be dealt
between the restoration of the route linking
the Brancovenesc Palace to the Mogosoaia Palace and Potlogi, residential palaces
which belonged to the Romanian ruler
Constantin Brancoveanu (?-1714).
Some more 1.2 million U.S. dollars will be added as co-financing by the Romanian
government as a condition set by the
World Bank and another 600,000 U.S. dollars in non-repayable funds through the
World Fund of Monuments. Enditem
