Agreed. Too close to tax freedom day. It should be renamed.
How about "DOMINION DAY" as it used to be called until the goddamned
Liberal Party of old changed it to appease Quebec...bloody idiots.

As a matter of fact, I will change it right now.

How about North American day. If it wasn't for the USA, Canada
wouldn't be what it is today.
c'tait pas mal con comme message. Tu es un vrai canadian toi !
I agree.
The name Canada, the maple leaf symbol and even the national anthem
all this belong solely to the french descendants in N.A., so it makes
sense to rename this day as you suggest.
Any suggestion now for a new country name that wouldn't be stolen this
time?
I have no quarrel with the anthem or symbols but the Dominion of
Canada says much for this country and I still don't know why it had to
be changed.
=
Yeah right. If the Americans had it their way we would be part of the
US. They keep whining that we don't spend enough on defence but the fact
is that the US is the only country we have ever had to defend ourselves
from. They have tried to invade us and take us over several times.
The Soviets were far to busy with minding their borders in Europe and China to
present an infantry rolling over the north pole and invade, then occupy
Yellowknife, Whitehorse and small towns in the northern regions of Quebec.
But after Palin turned out to be such a freak, I think the Americans should
have sold Alaska back to them. :)
And we would need them to defend us against any other.
If we had common sense we would gove Ottawa back to the indians and add 9
stars to the banner, no one want's Quebec and they do want to be a nation.
Let them. But I suspect the chickenshits are enjoying the free lunch.
You have a point, even Oh Canada was originally written by a Quebecker for the
1880 St. Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony. Calixa Lavalle wrote the music, which
was a setting of a patriotic poem composed by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-
Basile Routhier. The text was originally only in French.
Who? The Germans? My friend's father was blasting NAZI U-boats out of the
waters off of Gander well before the US was in WWII. He flew the Mosquito.
And then there's how there also is a defence treaty with the nations of the
British Commonwealth, which we happen to belong.
That explains why the words and music don't line up worth crap.
Ya, and how was WW II going before the Americans jumped in? LOL.
And have you ever seen a Canadian navy boat? China might not even waste
ammo on sinking it.
It wasn't translated to English until 26 years later, in 1906.
I'm still a fan of "The Maple Leaf Forever". Written by Alexander Muir.
The tree that inspired that lyric still stands, and was the unofficial anthem
of Anglo Canada for a very long time. He's buried at my local cemetary as
well.
Yeah, they won it. Just like "The Great Escape was all Americans". LOL!
>

The frigates aren't bad at all and considered high end my even the US Navy.
You don't know much about naval stuff, I guess.
Keep his song and lyrics handy, if Quebec ever gets the guts to leave we can
use it.

In many different translated flavors
Well, there's a similar thing with Gimn Sovetskogo Soyuza, the anthem of the
Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia replaced the lyrics,
but kept the music. I guess it was just easier to goosestep to! :)
Music we're all familliar with when ever we watch the Russians play hockey, or
the old Soviet squads a while back.
I forgot to add. The crazy part is that the Russians had a new anthem in 1991
after the USSR crashed and burned, but went back to the old music in 2001.
Can you say Putin? Can you say KGB (Kinda good boys)?
in english, of course. Stupid redneck
Yes, and it is too bad that Dief didn't win on the flag debate also.

But could we count on them? Our experience is that they would prefer to
sit back and let others fight for them until they see which way things
are going. They sat out most of WW I and then were prepared to sit out
WW II until Japan attacked them followed by a German declaration of war
against them.

Sorry, but I have ancestors who fled political persecution in the US and
came to Canada, and then they had to fight against Americans again when
they invaded and tried to take over Canada.
Mine too.

Depends who the enemy was, but most likely yes.
If it was Russia claiming NWT for resources, the US would rather deal with
Canada than Russia.

Funny. 1812? They invaded a British Colony. Remember who ran the country
at the time and who the Americans were really in conflict with.
And they were much better off getting rid of the Great Britania mentality
and replace it with a republic of 3 active branches of government. Heck,
Canada's senate is more like a over priced geriatric sleep center.

And if we change that to the 4th of july, that would make one less

It doesn't really matter does it. The Americans believe(d) they were
destined to rule all of North America. Look what they did to Mexico,
taking almost half its territory.

It's a curious thing, but those horrible British have left a legacy of
successful countries in the wake of their empire days. Our system in no
more flawed than the American system, tough I do tire of having a
foreign monarch as our head of state, even if it is only a figure head
position. Given that the US was bogged down in a war in Vietnam for more
than a decade and is now repeating that experience in Iraq, based on a
bunch of lies, their idiotic war on drugs, their high crime rate and the
huge gap between the rich and the poor, I don't think we have much to be
envious about, though some parts have nice winter weather.
Foreign Monarch?? The Queen is a Canadian you CIA Agent!
Gee Barry, you are supposed to be one of the smarter socilaists in news

canada saved your life.....do they give you a tax break so you can affford

evil.

Easy, once people take a good long look at what Ottawa represnts them, maybe
even dump Ottawa as a liability we don't need.
Easy, if Canada was Russia, would you want your friendly cousin living next
door or a missle silo 60 feet from the border?
US has a vested interest in making sure Kanada remains nuetral or is part of
the US. Certianly Kanada being part of China or Russia is out of the
question.

Pretty safe bet actually.

Actually the American system I believe is better. They don't have the
dictator syndrome and it can be repealed faster than you think. Right now
Obama is on a popularity run by shooting his mouth off. But as public
opinion loses steam and it is, the senate and congress will re-assert their
leash on the president.
No such safe guards exist in Kanada.
No. They have a vested interest in Canada remaining an ally. They had
their early defence radar system in Canada because they preferred to
fight the Soviets in Canadian air space rather than their own.

Of course the Americans living there now would prefer being in the US.
The Mexicans who lived there in the early 19th century wanted to be
Mexican.

Wouldn't it have been great for us if Dubya had been our president and

who voted him in.

Interesting Roy, can you show how that is, or is this something you
socilaists do when your high on crack and runnnig in circles
He's further to the left than me. You better watch out Mark. We're all

And would we be paid back for the money we gave to upper canada in the union
act?.. with interrest that would be enough to pay our debt AND buy back a
few province..
Not after all those transfer payments are deducted.
Ah! You mean Kanada (Village)?
Yes: We (Canadians that is) should rename ourselves 'North America'.
After all we are in America and we are (mostly) in the northern part
of it!
The US can have it's 'United States of America', including the parts
it stole from Mexico. And it's 'influence' in Puerto Rico.
BTW: Always amused when one reads "The USA and Possessions";
interesting for a country that was ostensibly founded to get away from
being a colony of Britain to have possessions?
Another Canadian (Sorry to keep using the old name!) alternative could
be UPNA (United Provinces of North America) and we should approach
those nice people; in the Turks and Caicos was it not, who wanted to
become part of Canada and offer them the chance to become our
Caribbean province. Don't worry about them being the 13th; other areas
will quickly follow wishing to become part of UPNA.
Also, btw, the right overtures through St. Pierre et Miquelon (Part of
France but just a few miles off the Province of Newfoundland-Labrador)
and using our French-Quebecois strengths might get UNPA into
membership in the EU (European Common Market). Years later we might,
reluctantly, agree to 'assist' our cousin, the USA, to also seek EU
membership; on our terms of course.
