Sir Michael O'Dwyer had (after the fact) approved of Reginald Dyer's
actions. By the time that Udham Singh had grown to manhood and
travelled to London to take revenge, Reginald Dyer had died.
Dyer's former boss and apologist, Sir Michael O'Dwyer, was still
alive and was equally hated. In trying to cleanse his administration's
image, he tried to portray Dyer's actions as acceptable and necessary.
[Ironically, O'Dwyer was probably personally horrified.]

In any event, Udham Singh wasn't mistaken about his victim.

Mr Bhattacharyya, you misunderstood my post completely.I was referring to Udham
Singh and you took it personally.Come on I know very well that Bhattacharyya's
are bengalis and not f***** b****** punjabis.
BTW it is punjabis (like IceCrash) who insist that Udham Singh killed
General Dwyer. That's why I posted the flame.

Mr.Cybermadrasi,
It might actually prove helpful if you gained some
knowledge about the topic you write about. I know, it seems far-fetched,
but many scholarly individuals would agree that having knowledge about
a topic before writing on it is actually beneficial. In fact, many
would say that talking/writing about something when one has little
or no knowledge about that something makes one appear a horse's ass.

< Gen. Dyer was the individual responsible for ordering the attack on
the unarmed men, women and children. He died of natural causes.
However, Michael O'Dwyer was Gen.Dyer's superior and whilst many Brits
were agahst at the Gen.Dyer's actions, Michael O'Dwyer wholeheartedly
defended them and justified them (tried to justify anyways). Uddham Singh
knew well enough who he was preparing to kill and he killed Michael O'Dwyer
with full knowledge of who it was he killed. Michael O'Dwyer was sent to
hell via Uddham Singh's bullet and Gen.Dyer in his haste to get to hell
didn't get to taste the lead which some Sikh eventually wouyld have fed him.>

The above information will hopefully prevent anyone else from

sounding like a horse's ass. Not that I am calling you a horse' ass

Mr.Cybermadrasi. I have far too much respect for horses.

Many Brits were horrified at Dwyers action, and incidentally his troops
were Indian, in british service. One result of his action in the UK was
the adoption of "Full Dominion Status" [Independence] for India as a
plank in the Labour party platform [Manifesto] for the 1940 election.
This election was postponed by the war, but Labour victory in 1945 meant
that it was at the top of the agenda. The UK branch of Congress was
affiliated to the Labour Party, and a number of Indians, including the
MP for Battersea [South London], and India's future defence minister
were active in Labour politics in the UK. The latter chairing the Air
Raid Precautions[ARP] committee of the London Borough of St Pancras
throughout World War 2.It is worth noting that there was virtually no
Indian elctorate in the UK then, so these men were elected by the
British

In 1946 British troops in India, in especially RAF other ranks refused
to take part in suppressing Indian Nationalists. In particular when the
RAF officers [aircrew] were prepared to bomb units of the Indian Navy,
who had also mutinied, british RAF armourers refused to load the bombs,
so the sortie had to be cancelled. At one of the ensuing court martials
a corporal is said to have told an officer "you maybe a bloody Dwyer but
we're no ****murderers". Reactionary elements among the Brit officer
class thus had it made clear that the majority of the rank and file
rejected their attempt to sabotage independence. Indeed a manifesto
issued by the "Strike Committee" stated categorically that they had
joined to "defeat fascism, and defend democracy, not deny democratic
rights to other peoples". The defence at many of these Court Martials
was conducted by Indian lawyers, without fees, since the airmens pay was
stopped when they were arrested. Although some heavy sentences were
handed down, most were remitted at ministerial level. Does anyone know
if political pressure from the new Indian govt was involvedc in this?

I for one am glad to know that Uddham Singh did not die as the result
of killing someone in error.

A lot of people believe that Dyer, and O'Dwyer, should burn in hell
for all eternity.

I, however believe that compassion is an admirable human
characteristic, and feel that they should each burn for a lifetime for
each of the innocents who perished.

Shorter than eternity, but they wouldn't be out for a few thousand
years yet.
