I read a few months back in "INDIA WEST" that a production co. was
making a movie based on Guru Gobind Singh Ji life. The movie is supposed
to be in Hindi. The person playing the role of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is the
a guy from "Cunni" and "Mahabarata". I was hell of offended at this.
First, I always thought that we are not supposed to make movies based on
any guru's life. Also, I find it a insult that they are going to make it
in Hindi. Anyone else feel this way. The same production company is
supposed to make a movie on Maharaja Ranjit Singh as well in Hindi.

I've always wondered about the discrepancy: why are there no films about
the Sikh Gurus while there are numerous containing the Hindu Deities. The
teachings in Islam may forbid the depiction of Mohammed (I'm not sure here
so someone more knowledgable please correct me if I'm wrong) but as far as
I'm aware no such belief exists in Sikhism.

I personally don't mind what language the film is made in... BUT the
language of Sikhs is Punjabi, and this fact would have to be conveyed.
Look at it another way, if the film was in Punjabi, only us Punjabi
speakers would understand it. The story of our Gurus is one for everybody
to hear. (Please refer to the "English in Gurdwaras" thread at this
point.)

I am more concerned by other aspects of such a film. Films, by their
nature (i.e. "entertainment") have a tendency to take shortcuts, liberties
etc. I, for one, would not appreciate a film about any of our Gurus
unless it was made (i.e. Produced AND directed AND written) by people
fully versed in Gurbani and who had the utmost respect for the Sikh way of
life and had the honorable intention of making a historical work. A film
which conveys the depth and passion of the Sikh culture, and the ordeals
and trials undergone by the Shahids could not be just an "entertainment"
but would have to be a major academic exercise. A "Mahabharata" type of
TV serialisation of our Gurus' lives has the capability of being such a
work ..but based on my experience of "religious" films so far, I
personally doubt that the degree of accuracy needed would actually be
presented.

I believe that this is wrong. I am against the making of any
such thing in which some actor is going to be playing the
role of our Gurus. This should be stopped.

In article <3kpjjl$j...@news.doit.wisc.edu>,

Me too! Indian movies are only made with one motive to
make money and not for historical reasons. I would
definetely not want this malicious attempt to steer the
Guru's Teaching to somebody's profit.

Hindi Film industry is full of Punjabis but did any
body of them ever thought of making a good movie in
Punjabi they only want to earn more and more money.
These Kapoors, Khannas, Deols, Chopras, Mehras,
Singhs etc. are all the hypocrites who are never going
to do anything for Punjabi.

A movie on Ranjit singh for historical reasons only is
a great idea, It is my life long dream to make a movie
on Ranjit singh that's why I have read so many books
about him. Not just Ranjit singh but Jassa singh
Ahluwalia, Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, Banda Bahadur,
Hari Singh Nalua, Karorsinghia etc. There is so much
in Sikh history which Sikhs themselves do not know.
The best way is to make a good Television Serial or
to make a pretty long movie on either of thes subjects.

Is there anything that we can do to stop it.I don't think so.
This movie is most likely driven by money and not to promote
Sikh religion. Making a T.V. serials on Ranjit Singh is not a
good idea neither unless it is a documentary instead of a story.
