I am not the organizer of this group, but someone should make an
attempt at defining/describing briefly what the group is for before it
gets out of hand and what language should be used most of the time.
Any volunteers?

I'll introduce myself, too. My name is Philip Stinard, and I don't speak
Spanish *yet* but I hope to learn soon :) I spent a month working in the
Mayaguez/ Aguadilla area earlier this year (I was pollinating a winter
corn crop) and I fell in love with Puerto Rico and its culture. If
Spanish is chosen as the language for this group, I will respect that
choice and learn Spanish more quickly than I had originally intended :)
I hope to return each year to Puerto Rico for the indefinite future if
I am lucky and my project receives continued funding. (I want to go
back *very* badly.)

Saludos Felipe,
Welcome! Go ahead, its OK to post in English, however your Spanish will
not improve as much :) Tell us more about your project. Where you in
Isabela? What's the corn destination? Anything!
Carlos.

I too do not know spanish, but I am learning. If spanish is chosen for the
group, than I will have to learn it faster.
My girlfriend ius from Pueto Rico and I have heard stories of its beauty.
I cannot wait to hear more.

Gracias, Carlos. Yes, I was in Isabela! I work at the Maize Genetics
Stock Center in Urbana, Illinois. We grew our winter corn crop at the
Tropical Agriculture Research Station farm in Isabela. I stayed at the
TARS compound in Mayaguez and commuted each morning to Isabela before the
sun rose. By the way, I remember driving by the Hewlett Packard plant one
day when I was exploring Punta Borinquen :) I had a lot of adventures
while I was in Puerto Rico, and I'll be asking a lot of questions as I
post to this group. I was in Mayaguez during the Festival Patronales.
Does Mayaguez host this event each year, and is it always around the same
time in January? I enjoyed the music very much, and several nights I fell
asleep listening to the music from my house at TARS, which was only about
a block from the site of the Festival.
Before I close for now, here is a quick quiz question: Where is the
Plaza del Mango Obsequio, and what is its significance? (I found the
Plaza one day during my explorations . . .)

Hello Phil:
My name is Felipe Soto, I am from Aguadilla, I got my MS from Mayaguez,
and Iam here at the U of I in Urbana. We can get together sometime at
espresso and talk. I am in the Department of Entomology and we may know
some people from the experimental station.
Felipe
Phil,
Spanish is not the ONLY language of this group, althoug it will certainly
be the most used. Feel free to use Spanish or English whenever you
like. They charter of this group is very simmilar to PR language
law.

Gracias, Edelmiro! Emprendere hablar Espanol cuando yo tengo tiempo, pero
es dificil para mi :) I still need to learn more language structure and
word usage, but this group will give me a good opportunity. Please correct
me if I say something that doesn't make sense. I speak French pretty well,
and that is likely to confuse me as I try to learn Spanish. For now, if
I have many sentences to say, I'll have to use English, but I will use
Spanish when I can.
