Britain's Hadley Climate Research Unit, University of East Anglia, suffered
a data breach in recent days when a hacker apparently broke into their
system and made away with thousands of emails and documents. The stolen data
was then posted to a Russian server and has quickly made the rounds among
climate skeptics. The documents within the archive, if proven to be
authentic, would at best be embarrassing for many prominent climate
researchers and at worst, damning.

The electronic break in itself has been verified by the director of the
research unit, Professor Phil Jones. He told Britain's Investigate
magazine's TGIF Edition "It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three
or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and
copied loads of data files and emails."
The file that has been making the rounds was initially brought to light by
the website The Air Vent. The 61mb file contains thousands of documents and
emails. As the archive was just discovered within the last 24 hours, its
authenticity has not been determined and as such readers should cast a
skeptical eye on the contents. It should also be noted that it appears the
emails were illegally obtained by whoever originally posted them.
At least one person that was included in some of the correspondence, Steve
McIntyre of the website Climate Audit, verified the authenticity of at least
some of the messages. McIntyre said, "Every email that I've examined so far
looks genuine. There are a few emails of mine that are 100% genuine. It is
really quite breathtaking."
The contents of the archive contain documents and email correspondence from
a veritable who's who in climate science. Among those included in the emails
are Phil Jones, Keith Briffa, his assistant, Michael Mann of the University
of Virginia, Malcolm Hughes at the University of Arizona, Kevin Trenberth at
the National Center for Atmospheric Research, James Hansen of NASA's Goddard
Institute of Space Studies and others.
The emails contain an array of discussions including what appear to be
concerted efforts to withhold data. Just as troubling is conversations that
allude to potentially manipulating climate data to "hide the decline" of
temperatures seen in the last decade.

Korespondencja zostala ukradziona z serwerów Uniwersytetu Wschodniej Anglii i dotyczy naukowców z tamtejszego oddzialu badan klimatycznych (Climate Research Unit), jednego z wiodacych na swiecie. Nieznani hakerzy zaczeli ja udostepniac pod koniec zeszlego tygodnia autorom internetowych blogów, którzy nie wierza w to, ze czlowiek ma decydujacy wplyw na ocieplenie klimatu, a czasem w ogóle podaja globalne ocieplenie w watpliwosc. A ci zaczeli publikowac te fragmenty, które maja stawiac czolowych klimatologów w dwuznacznym swietle.
Co wynika z ujawnionych e-maili? Siegaja one az 1996 roku. Ciekawe, ze mniej wiecej do przelomu wieków naukowcy wymieniali sie w nich glównie danymi, analizami wyników badan, omawiali konferencje, podróze, szczególy wspólpracy, odpowiadali na pytania dziennikarzy. Potem jest coraz wiecej emocji - badacze coraz wiecej czasu poswiecaja odpieraniu ataków ze strony inaczej interpretujacych klimatyczne dane, zbijaniu demagogicznych argumentów sceptycznych, glównie prawicowych mediów, a takze obronie swojej naukowej reputacji. Listy pokazuja, ze czuli sie coraz bardziej jak w oblezonej twierdzy, majac swiadomosc tego, ze kazdy niebaczny komentarz czy drobny blad, jaki popelnia, natychmiast obraca sie przeciw nim.
W niektórych listach nie przebieraja w slowach, bije z nich irytacja, wscieklosc na przeciwników, a takze na niektóre prace konkurentów, ich zdaniem calkowicie bledne, które jednak przeszly sito recenzji i ukazaly sie w naukowych periodykach. Padaja bardzo ostre slowa ("ten idiota", "dalbym mu w pysk"), ale pamietajmy, ze byla to prywatna korespondencja, która nigdy nie miala ujrzec dziennego swiatla. W koncu naukowcy to tez ludzie. Poza tym nie ukrywali tych opinii - wyrazali je publicznie, tylko nieco ogledniej.
Ujawniajacy te korespondencje blogerzy ze szczególna satysfakcja cytuja listy, które maja rzekomo wskazywac na manipulacje danymi naukowymi. Najczesciej przytacza sie fragment z e-maila Phila Jonesa, dyrektora Climate Research Unit, który pisal w listopadzie 1999 r.: "Wlasnie zrobilem trik Mike'a (...), zeby ukryc spadek temperatury". Te slowa sa dla klimatycznych sceptyków jak dymiacy pistolet w reku zabójcy - oto dowód na to, ze klimatolodzy ukrywaja to, ze Ziemia sie w rzeczywistosci oziebia, a nie ociepla!
Ale tak to wyglada, dopóki sie nie przedstawi kontekstu, w jakim pada to zdanie. Chodzilo o serie pomiarów przyrostów w drzewach, które do okolo 1960 r. dobrze oddawaly wzrost temperatury na Ziemi, ale potem ich wskazania rozminely sie z tym, co mierzono za pomoca termometrów. Ten problem, zwany "problemem rozbieznosci", byl szeroko opisywany w literaturze naukowej. Badacze przedstawiajacy na wykresach trendy klimatyczne musieli, w wielkim uproszczeniu, jakos pomijac i opuszczac niewiarygodne dendrologiczne dane. Mike z listu Jonesa, czyli Michael Mann, profesor Uniwersytetu Pensylwanii, wyjasnial w "New York Times": - Naukowcy czesto uzywaja slowa "trik" na okreslenie dobrego sposobu, by rozwiazac problem, bynajmniej nie chodzilo tu o zaden sekret. Te slowa brzmia jak dowód winy, ale kiedy im sie blizej przyjrzec, nie ma w nich niczego obciazajacego".
