At One with G-d

A story.
Before the war it was not uncommon for a Jew to live his entire life in a
shtetl, a village, with a population of which ninety per cent were Jewish. For
many, the only contact with non-Jews was when the so-called 'Shabbos Goy" came
to their homes on Shabbat mornings during the cold winter months to light the
stove.
Now it so happened that Schmerel, a Jew from the shtetl, had reason to visit the
Shtot - the big city.
Schmerel was of course amazed by the tall buildings, the factories, the roads,
which he passed on his way to the Jewish section. But what really shocked him
was the small number of Jews compared to the huge number of non-Jews. Turning to
a fellow Jew he exclaimed, "Why on earth do you need so many Shabbos Goys?"
Unfortunately we have our own share of modern-day Schmerels. Jews for whom
contact with non-Jewish business associates is limited to just that - an
opportunity to make parnassa, a livelihood. The Jew lives in his world and the
non-Jew in his, with no more than business passing between them.
Being the source of parnassa for a Jew who uses his money to lead a life based
on Torah, to support Israel, to support Jewish institutions, to educate her own
and other children in the way of G-d - is no trivial matter. And certainly the
non- Jew, as a client or supplier of the Jew, will be rewarded for his role in
these Jewish achievements.
But is this the entire purpose of his contact with the non-Jew?
There is a Talmudic expression:"The wine may come from the host, but it is
proper to show appreciation to the waiter".
The Jew believes that his success in business comes from G-d. But it is his
non-Jewish business associates who are the vehicle for G-d's blessing.
If I receive from the non-Jew the opportunity to do business, to make money,
which I can then use to serve G-d and His people, is it not proper that I show
him appreciation by giving something in return?
On a more general level: We live in Australia, one of the best countries the
world has ever known, a country which has enabled us to have unprecedented
success, a country whose reputation is such that Jews from around the world have
chosen to settle here.
We certainly owe this country and its people something in return.
But what should we give?
As Jews it is important that we realize that our role on this planet extends
beyond personal religious devotion or even ethnic loyalty.

1 After these things had been done, the officials approached me and
said, "The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not
separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their
abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Per'izzites, the
Jeb'usites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
2 For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for
themselves and for their sons; so that the holy race has mixed itself
with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of
the officials and chief men has been foremost."
12 Therefore give not your daughters to their sons, neither take their
daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity,
that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for
an inheritance to your children for ever.'
[Notice the passage that said: "the holy race has mixed itself
with the peoples of the lands.." Race NOT religion! Also notice
another bit that showed even back then how a Jew was to view the rest
of humanity: "Therefore give not your daughters to their sons, neither
take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or
prosperity.." What Jews wrote people! Not what I said! Tavish]
