archaeological evidence for such a campaign?
On the contrary, the archaeological evidence is overwhelmingly
against it. Of the 30 or so sites that are said to have been taken -
that is, destroyed - by an incoming group of Israelites, only one or
two could be candidates, and those are not certain. So the story of
Joshua seems to be about a military commander, a local hero who won
some great battles but the story is vastly exaggerated.
The fact is, most of these settlements we're talking about were
founded peacefully in the hill country where there were very few
Canaanite settlements. Almost none of them is a walled town. We have
no evidence of armor or warfare or weapons. Most of these are farming
villages in isolated areas where people were able to settle without
any conquest. And the Book of Judges acknowledges for decades after
Joshua's death that Canaanites were everywhere - so they hadn't been
exterminated….
In your book, you present the conquest theory along with two other
theories of how the Israelite nation came to be, the other two being
peaceful infiltration and peasant revolt. Which one of these is
closest to the truth?
Well, the peaceful infiltration model was interesting for a very
long time. It suits modern sensibilities better. It salvages the
Biblical notion that the ancestors of the Israelites had been
shepherds and pastoral nomads, and not invaders. But the problem was
it was naïve anthropologically. It was developed by Europeans who had
never been to the Middle East and really didn't know much about
Bedouins. And it's outdated today.
The so-called peasant revolt theory is a more recent theory that
views ancient Israel as a kind of peasants' war of the sort we are
familiar with in the 20th century. But again, there's really very
little evidence for it. It was largely a Marxist notion projected back
on antiquity…. But it had one great merit: it argued for indigenous,
or local, origins. And that seems to be correct. And it also suggests
that the early Israelites were peasant farmers (although the word
peasant is misleading, because there probably weren't any real
overlords). But they certainly were local farmers, so that part of the
model still looks good today.
But among archaeologists and among mainstream biblical scholars,
the model I pursue in the book is the reigning model today, although I
think laypeople are just beginning to hear about….
The model doesn't have a very good name - you could call it
"indigenous origins" or something like that. It's odd that nobody's
given it a real name. I hope my book will stimulate discussion and
we'll come up with a catchy name or something convenient.
So are you saying that there was no conflict at the beginnings of the
Israelite nation?
I wouldn't say there were no military conquests, but it is clear
for the most part the settlement was much more peaceful. The struggle
was not a military one - it was a cultural one, a social one, an
economic one, and ultimately, a religious struggle.
What was the political and economic situation like at the time of the
emergence of the Israelites?
Well it was fortunate for any new group seeking to establish
themselves. The whole Eastern world had gone through an enormous
collapse starting around 1300 B.C. By 1200, there was certainly a
power vacuum in Canaan. The Egyptians had lost their grip almost
entirely on their empire there. Other new people besides the
Israelites were coming in, like the Philistines. There were new
peoples emerging in Transjordan….
This was a perfect opportunity for a new group to insinuate
themselves. And for people who need a miracle, I always say the
miracle was that our Israel emerged at just this period. A hundred
years earlier, it wouldn't have been possible: the Egyptians would
have crushed such a movement.
A hundred years later, it would have been too late: the Philistines,
Phoenicians, Arameans and others would have already taken over central
Canaan. So there is something that seems almost miraculous in the
timing of this new movement in the hillcountry of central Canaan. It's
a propitious time.
Were the early Israelites a homogenous group?
No, they were not…. It's obvious that early Israel was a motley
crew of assorted peoples, mostly from Canaan, mostly displaced farmers
and villagers, but some newcomers from Transjordan, some refugees from
Egypt probably (our Exodus group) and other nameless people….
Eventually all these peoples were welded together very much as the
American people have become, despite their nefarious origins, into a
single people with a single name, with a single language and at least
a single ideal, although their reality was very different.
Israel was by no means unified. The process of unification took a
long time and it was never completely successful. The North and South
split apart within 100 years of the establishment of the state. And
it's very clear that Israel never attained the unity that the Bible
envisions as an ideal.
You mention two key pieces of Egyptian text that shed light on the
emergence of the Israelites. One is the Letters from Canaan. Can you
tell us a little bit about these and what they say about the emergence
of the early Israelites?
These letters are often called the Amarna Letters for the site of
Amarna, in middle Egypt, where they were found more than a century
ago. And they are letters written on clay tablets in a red shaped
writing… from the princes of Canaan who were at this time puppets of
the Egyptian overlords, the Pharaohs. And this was part of a
diplomatic correspondence.
These letters are very revealing about conditions in the 14th
century, when they were written. They deal with social and economic
and political matters in great detail. They are full of interesting
gossip: we have the names of Canaanite rulers and their dynasties, and
the local warfare between them. We have reference to a people called
the Apiru that sound a bit like our Hebrews, and may be related in
some way. [They were] a rebellious group of social dropouts. These
letters are priceless information about Canaan let's say about a
century and a half before the emergence of Israel. They give us a good
idea of the Canaanite society out of which Israel emerged. And I
stress in my book that they deal with the very systems that these
early Israelites rebelled against: the idea that the land belonged to
Pharaoh. And what the early Israelites said is No, it does not, it
belongs to Yahweh, and we are his stewards. And that's a radically
different idea from the idea a century and a half earlier.
The second piece of textual evidence you mention - and you already
mentioned once - is the Pharoah Menapteh Stele of 1210 B.C.E. Can you
tell us what that says, both literally and historically?
That's a victory inscription found in Egypt over a century ago and
now in the Cairo Museum. It's intact. The readings are not in
question. It deals with the campaigns of one Menapteh, the son of
Ramses II… around 1210 B.C.E. in Canaan and also in Egypt or Africa.
And among the people he claims to have conquered are people the text
calls Israelites!
It doesn't have the Egyptian indicator for state or nation, which
the other peoples are described as. It has the sign for "People" or
"Ethnic Group." So it should be read as "Israelite Peoples." And what
the text says is, The Israelites have been destroyed. They are laid
waste. Their seed is no more.
It's the first reference in history to the Israelite peoples. The
reading is absolutely certain, and he describes them accurately: as a
group of people not yet a nation or a state. And they were numerous
enough to be feared by the Egyptians, who were very well aware of them
and probably avoided them.
So it's not because the text is true - Israel was not destroyed -
but it's very important because it tells us that Israel was there
already. And the date is fixed by Egyptian records and astronomical
reckoning too, right around 1210 B.C. It fits perfectly with the
archaeological evidence.
Skeptics, of course, say it doesn't mean Israel but it certainly
does. And no serious scholar believes otherwise. So it's not our later
Israel - the Israel of the Monarchy - but it's our Israel of the
highland villages….
Do we know how many Israelites there were at the time of this
inscription?
We have a rough idea. Demographic projections are guesses, but
they're intelligent guesses. If you take some 300 settlements and you
figure out how large each one was and about how many houses they could
have contained, and about how many people lived in each house, you
arrive at a figure for the 12th century of perhaps 50,000 people. So
for the 11th century, maybe about 75,000. And by the 10th century,
when the state emerges, maybe about 100,000. And those are widely
accepted figures. But that is of course far below the biblical
figures.
According to the Bible, there were 650,000 men in the Israelite
army in the wilderness and early Canaan. That would have meant a
population of 3 million or more and that's totally impossible. So
early Israel was small.
At what point can we begin to call the Israelites Jews?
The term Jew is really an abbreviation of the term Judah, for the
Southern Kingdom. And it occurs not in the Hebrew Bible as such - the
people there are mostly Hebrews, or Israelites, or the sons of Israel
- but a neo-Assyrian inscription that describes the siege of Jerusalem
in 701 that calls Hezekiah, the Judean king, a Jew…. And after the
Exile in the 6th century, in Babylon, the refugees begin to be called
Jews and call themselves Jews.
So the term is relatively late. It comes into use only when there
is no more Israel. Of course Judaism, as a religion, is later still.
Not until the Roman period do you have rabbis or synagogues or any of
the other things we take to be characteristic of Judaism. So it's very
important to separate ancient Israel and the Israelites from later
Judaism, and Jews. The two are related, but we're talking about an
earlier period in my book, that you almost would have to say is pre-
Jewish, We're talking about the religion of an ancient Israel that
existed for about 600 years, between around 1200 and around 600 B.C.E.
So we know that the Israelites emerged from the local Canaanite
population. We have a fairly good sense of where they lived and how
they lived. What is the next big unknown in research into the origins
of the ancient Israelites?
Well I think one of the topics that has not been researched much
until recently in the light of archaeology is Israelite religion. And
the third book in my trilogy is on that subject because, again, I find
laypeople very confused and scholars have not been much interested in
explaining matters until recently. So the book I just sent to press is
titled, "Did G-d have a wife? Archaeology and folk religion in ancient
Israel." It's an attempt to show what we do know about the long
development of Israelite religion….
I think in the future we'll see a lot more research into religion
and cult, but Israelis, who do most of the work these days, are not
only not much interested in ancient religion, but it's a dangerous
subject in Israel. The Orthodox don't want any investigation into
ancient Israelite religion and will do their best to stop
archaeologists from dealing with these matters.
So as a non-Israeli - although I've spent my whole life working in
Israel - I wrote a book that I don't think any Israeli archaeologist
would dare write.
But the other area that is neglected is the actual excavation of
some of these highland villages. Most of them are known on the basis
of surface surveys done 10 or 15 years ago. And unfortunately, the
Intifada and the Palestinian state that may emerge are going to make
any such investigation impossible.
The fact is, not one of these early Israelite villages has been
completely excavated and fully published. And I'm afraid that not many
are going to be because it happens that most of them are behind the
Green Line in the occupied territories, or whatever you wish to call
them…. And you certainly cannot expect the Palestinians are going to
want to excavate early Israelite villages in what they consider their
territory.
So unfortunately, the kind of research we ought to be doing in the
next decade is simply not going to be possible.

work has spent 19 weeks on Israel’s bestseller list — and that success
has come to the history professor despite his book challenging
Israel’s biggest taboo.
Dr Shlomo Sand argues that the idea of a Jewish nation — whose need
for a safe haven was originally used to justify the founding of the
state of Israel — is a myth invented little more than a century ago.
An expert on European history at Tel Aviv University, Dr Sand drew on
extensive historical and archaeological research to support not only
this claim but several more — all equally controversial.
In addition, he argues that the Jews were never exiled from the Holy
Land, that most of today’s Jews have no historical connection to the
land called Israel and that the only political solution to the
country’s conflict with the Palestinians is to abolish the Jewish
state.
The success of “When and How Was the Jewish People Invented?” looks
likely to be repeated around the world. A French edition, launched
last month, is selling so fast that it has already had three print
runs.
Translations are under way into a dozen languages, including Arabic
and English. But he predicted a rough ride from the pro-Israel lobby
when the book is launched by his English publisher, Verso, in the
United States next year.
In contrast, he said Israelis had been, if not exactly supportive, at
least curious about his argument. Tom Segev, one of the country’s
leading journalists, has called the book “fascinating and
challenging”.
Surprisingly, Dr Sand said, most of his academic colleagues in Israel
have shied away from tackling his arguments. One exception is Israel
Bartal, a professor of Jewish history at Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. Writing in Haaretz, the Israeli daily newspaper, Dr Bartal
made little effort to rebut Dr Sand’s claims. Paradoxically, he
dedicated much of his article instead to defending his profession. He
suggested that Israeli historians were not as ignorant about the
invented nature of Jewish history as Dr Sand contends.
The idea for the book had come to him many years ago, Dr Sand said,
but he waited until recently to start working on it. “I cannot claim
to be particularly courageous in publishing the book now,” he said. “I
waited until I was a full professor. There is a price to be paid in
Israeli academia for expressing views of this sort.”
Dr Sand’s main argument is that until little more than a century ago,
Jews thought of themselves as Jews only because they shared a common
religion. At the turn of the 20th century, he said, Zionist Jews
challenged this idea and started creating a national history by
inventing the idea that Jews existed as a people separate from their
religion.
Equally, the modern Zionist idea of Jews being obligated to return
from exile to the Promised Land was entirely alien to Judaism, he
added.
“Zionism changed the idea of Jerusalem. Before, the holy places were
seen as places to long for, not to be lived in. For 2,000 years Jews
stayed away from Jerusalem not because they could not return but
because their religion forbade them from returning until the messiah
came.”
The biggest surprise during his research came when he started looking
at the archaeological evidence from the biblical era.
“I was not raised as a Zionist, but like all other Israelis I took it
for granted that the Jews were a people living in Judea and that they
were exiled by the Romans in 70 AD.
“But once I started looking at the evidence, I discovered that the
kingdoms of David and Solomon were legends.
“Similarly with the exile. In fact, you can’t explain Jewishness
without exile. But when I started to look for history books describing
the events of this exile, I couldn’t find any. Not one.
“That was because the Romans did not exile people. In fact, Jews in
Palestine were overwhelming peasants and all the evidence suggests
they stayed on their lands.”
Instead, he believes an alternative theory is more plausible: the
exile was a myth promoted by early Christians to recruit Jews to the
new faith. “Christians wanted later generations of Jews to believe
that their ancestors had been exiled as a punishment from God.”
So if there was no exile, how is it that so many Jews ended up
scattered around the globe before the modern state of Israel began
encouraging them to “return”?
Dr Sand said that, in the centuries immediately preceding and
following the Christian era, Judaism was a proselytising religion,
desperate for converts. “This is mentioned in the Roman literature of
the time.”
Jews travelled to other regions seeking converts, particularly in
Yemen and among the Berber tribes of North Africa. Centuries later,
the people of the Khazar kingdom in what is today south Russia, would
convert en masse to Judaism, becoming the genesis of the Ashkenazi
Jews of central and eastern Europe.
Dr Sand pointed to the strange state of denial in which most Israelis
live, noting that papers offered extensive coverage recently to the
discovery of the capital of the Khazar kingdom next to the Caspian
Sea.
Ynet, the website of Israel’s most popular newspaper, Yedioth
Ahronoth, headlined the story: “Russian archaeologists find long-lost
Jewish capital.” And yet none of the papers, he added, had considered
the significance of this find to standard accounts of Jewish history.
One further question is prompted by Dr Sand’s account, as he himself
notes: if most Jews never left the Holy Land, what became of them?
“It is not taught in Israeli schools, but most of the early Zionist
leaders, including David Ben Gurion [Israel's first prime minister],
believed that the Palestinians were the descendants of the area’s

In contrast, he said Israelis had been, if not exactly supportive, at
least curious about his argument. Tom Segev, one of the country’s
leading journalists, has called the book “fascinating and
challenging”.
Surprisingly, Dr Sand said, most of his academic colleagues in Israel
have shied away from tackling his arguments. One exception is Israel
Bartal, a professor of Jewish history at Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. Writing in Haaretz, the Israeli daily newspaper, Dr Bartal
made little effort to rebut Dr Sand’s claims. Paradoxically, he
dedicated much of his article instead to defending his profession. He
suggested that Israeli historians were not as ignorant about the
invented nature of Jewish history as Dr Sand contends.
The idea for the book had come to him many years ago, Dr Sand said,
but he waited until recently to start working on it. “I cannot claim
to be particularly courageous in publishing the book now,” he said. “I
waited until I was a full professor. There is a price to be paid in
Israeli academia for expressing views of this sort.”
Dr Sand’s main argument is that until little more than a century ago,
Jews thought of themselves as Jews only because they shared a common
religion. At the turn of the 20th century, he said, Zionist Jews
challenged this idea and started creating a national history by
inventing the idea that Jews existed as a people separate from their
religion.
Equally, the modern Zionist idea of Jews being obligated to return
from exile to the Promised Land was entirely alien to Judaism, he
added.
“Zionism changed the idea of Jerusalem. Before, the holy places were
seen as places to long for, not to be lived in. For 2,000 years Jews
stayed away from Jerusalem not because they could not return but
because their religion forbade them from returning until the messiah
came.”
The biggest surprise during his research came when he started looking
at the archaeological evidence from the biblical era.
“I was not raised as a Zionist, but like all other Israelis I took it
for granted that the Jews were a people living in Judea and that they
were exiled by the Romans in 70 AD.
“But once I started looking at the evidence, I discovered that the
kingdoms of David and Solomon were legends.
“Similarly with the exile. In fact, you can’t explain Jewishness
without exile. But when I started to look for history books describing
the events of this exile, I couldn’t find any. Not one.
“That was because the Romans did not exile people. In fact, Jews in
Palestine were overwhelming peasants and all the evidence suggests
they stayed on their lands.”
Instead, he believes an alternative theory is more plausible: the
exile was a myth promoted by early Christians to recruit Jews to the
new faith. “Christians wanted later generations of Jews to believe
that their ancestors had been exiled as a punishment from God.”
So if there was no exile, how is it that so many Jews ended up
scattered around the globe before the modern state of Israel began
encouraging them to “return”?
Dr Sand said that, in the centuries immediately preceding and
following the Christian era, Judaism was a proselytising religion,
desperate for converts. “This is mentioned in the Roman literature of
the time.”
Jews travelled to other regions seeking converts, particularly in
Yemen and among the Berber tribes of North Africa. Centuries later,
the people of the Khazar kingdom in what is today south Russia, would
convert en masse to Judaism, becoming the genesis of the Ashkenazi
Jews of central and eastern Europe.
Dr Sand pointed to the strange state of denial in which most Israelis
live, noting that papers offered extensive coverage recently to the
discovery of the capital of the Khazar kingdom next to the Caspian
Sea.
Ynet, the website of Israel’s most popular newspaper, Yedioth
Ahronoth, headlined the story: “Russian archaeologists find long-lost
Jewish capital.” And yet none of the papers, he added, had considered
the significance of this find to standard accounts of Jewish history.
One further question is prompted by Dr Sand’s account, as he himself
notes: if most Jews never left the Holy Land, what became of them?
“It is not taught in Israeli schools, but most of the early Zionist
leaders, including David Ben Gurion [Israel's first prime minister],
believed that the Palestinians were the descendants of the area’s
original Jews. They believed the Jews had later converted to Islam.”
