Morarji Desai, a Brahmin belonging to the Anavil sub-caste, was
installed as Prime Minister of India on March 24, 1977, after
the lifting of Indira Nehru-Gandhi's Kautilyan emergency. He was the
fourth Brahmin Prime Minister of the Indian Union in a
row, after Pandit J.Nehru, Pandit Shastri and Indira Gandhi (barring
the 14-day care-taker PM G.L.Nanda). He ruled up to
July 28, 1979. Immediately after coming to power, he devoted all his
powers to propagating Brahmanism, especially the
peculiar Brahmin custom of drinking human urine. Prior to Pandit
Morarji Desai, urine-drinking was confined to the Brahmins,
but he devoted his life to spreading this custom amongst the general
Indian population. This article provides some quotes and
extracts on this peculiarly Brahmin custom and Pandit Morarji Desai's
efforts to spread it.

Letters: Taking the piss
Urine drinking has the trappings of New Ageism and
pseudoscience ("The Fabricators", 23 August, p 36). I
have not come across any reputable reference to the benefits of
drinking urine, but I have heard that certain
Hollywood luminaries do it and some claim that it has
miraculous curative powers.
I hope that the museums where these fabricators work have a
science department that ensures the accuracy
and educational content of their exhibits to make sure visitors
take an accurate message away with them.

While some ancient medical practices have value, quite often
they can be very harmful, notwithstanding the
romantic view taken by those who look at them uncritically.
"The Fabricators" gives a very interesting example of what
seems disgusting to most people: drinking one's
urine. This was something that Morarji Desai, the late Indian
Prime Minister used to do. Some
Indians also drink cow's urine.
In northern Pakistan and parts of India, external wounds are
treated by washing with the person's urine. A
bizarre and dangerous practice in Pakistan is to treat a wound
on a finger by inserting it in a hole dug in the
ground filled with urine. This is surely a quick way to get
tetanus and Lord knows what else.
It would be useful to know about the uses and abuses of this
yellow liquid. Can New Scientist commission a
medical expert to enlighten us?

During the early sixteenth century, when the Moguls' first came to the
Surat district as conquerors, the Anavils were soldier farmers by all
accounts. Why they were soldiering, besides farming, is not known for
sure but one can guess. The word "DESAI" was not is use to describe
these people then. In those days, they were popularly known as
BHATELLAS rather than just ANAVILS. There are five interpretations for
this sobriquet:
1. Bhatella is a combination of two Sanskrit words: (BHAT+EELA). BHAT
means a soldier and EELA means earth. The word, therefore, means a
soldier-farmer;
2. The word could also be a combination of BHAT+HATHILA. HATHILA means
tenacious or obstinate and hence the word would be interpreted as a
tenacious or obstinate soldier;
3. The word has also been interpreted as a degenerate or derogative
derivative of the word BRASHTILLA which means those brahmins who had
lost their purity;
4. The word could have some BHAT meaning RICE + EELA meaning EARTH
thus being interpreted as RICE CULTIVATORS. It is also true that they
were the very first rice farmers in southern Gujarat, and
5. The word could be a combination of BHAT meaning RIVER DELTA + EELA
meaning EARTH and hence being interpreted as a people who farmed or
lived in river deltas.
The first interpretation, that of a soldier farmer, appears to be the
most likely interpretation because the word is a proper Sanskrit word
and Anavils were certainly fighters. Other surnames (family names)
that are common to the Anavils confirm this observation-NAIK VASHI and
MEHTA- all of which mean professionals in the army or Royal
administration. NAYAK means a platoon leader, e.g. GANANAYAK. The
Sanskrit word "VASH" means to control and MEHTA was a title given to
the prime ministers of the princely states in Saurashtra were called
Mehtas. Today, the meaning of the word MEHTA has expanded to include
accountants and teachers, possibly because of the heavy concentration
on education in the last hundred years since the arrival of British
influence and many Mehta families adopted a natural bent towards
accounting and teaching which is what they did when they were advisors
to the rulers of the princely states in earlier times.
