Jeremiah McAuliffe Refuted - Part One

A Comprehensive Refutation of Jeremiah McAuliffe

Verily, all praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, we seek His help, and we
ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our
selves, and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allah has guided, there is no one
that can lead him astray. And whomsoever Allah has sent astray, there is no
one that can guide him. And I bear witness that there is no god except Allah
- alone, no partners has He - and I bear witness that Muhammad, may the
blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, is His Servant and His Messenger.

As for what follows:

Verily, the best teaching is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the
guidance of Muhammad, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. And
the worst of affairs is that which is introduced into this Deen of ours. And
every new thing is an innovation, and every innovation is something which
leads astray, and everything which leads astray is in the Hellfire.

To proceed:

Jeremiah McAuliffe seems to exist solely in cyberspace, but I'm sure he is
quite active in his base of Pittsburgh. Regardless of his sphere of
influence, he represents a very dangerous, un-Islamic heresy, which is the
madhhab of the Modernists. Therefore, in the interest of slowing the spread
of this deviant, innovated sect, I have made an effort to expose and refute
his beliefs and concepts, many of which are common to the Modernist
innovation. Perhaps Allah will instill some fear in his blackened heart and
cause him to cease making Daw'ah to Bid'ah. May Allah accept it from me.

The Modernist movement (or Asraniyyah) is also known as the
Intellectualist/Rationalist movement (or Aqlaniyyah). A similar movement is
that of the Secularists (or Almaniyyah). They are really one and the same,
except that the Secularists are clear about their beliefs and heresies,
whereas the Modernists are not so obvious about their deviant Minhaj.

In a 7-tape set, Shaykh Jamal Zarabozo from Colorado has dealt extensively
with the Modernist movement and how it differs from the pure beliefs and
practices of Ahlus Sunnah wa'l Jamaah. So I will simply refer the reader to
those tapes, which can be purchased from Dar Makkah at (303) 691-2201
(Insha'allah, this number is current).

My first impression of Jeremiah McAuliffe, based on his posts in the "Islam"
newsgroups, was that he was a deviant Modernist. Then I softened my opinion,
thinking perhaps he was just ignorant and would shape up. However, recently
I visited his Web page (http://speed.city-net.com/~alimhaq/miaha.html) and
was appalled at what I saw. His deviancy is clear and unmistakable. He is
nothing but a Modernist fool. And some of his ideas and practices are beyond
Bid'ah and into the realm of Kufr and Shirk. Insha'allah, the evidence will
follow.

The first point to be made is that McAuliffe has apparently gleaned his
knowledge of Islam exclusively from deviants and "thinkers" such as the
following:

Muhammad Asad - Jewish convert to Islam whose translation and tafsir of the
Qur'an is one of the most popular in America. In his tafsir, he said that
the stories of the Prophets contained in the Qur'an are simply legends which
had gained historical status at the time of Muhammad, may the blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him, and thus were included in the Qur'an. Yet Allah
says in 25:5 that this is actually the saying of the Kuffaar (that the Qur'an
is tales of the ancients)! Asad also had other corrupt ideas, such as saying
Islamic hijab is not required. He claimed modest dress, as defined by the
time and place, is all that is necessary, meaning that the morality of the
society at the time of Rasoolullah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him, dictated that the women needed to be covered, but today's society
has improved to where they need not be covered. So by this statement, he
unwittingly insults the Sahabah, with whom Allah was pleased, implying that
their morals were such that the women had to be fully covered to prevent
fitnah, yet morals now have improved to where women need not be covered
fully. (The truth is that women must be covered completely no matter what
time or place it is).

McAuliffe is greatly enamored of Asad, and in fact goes beyond Asad on the
matter of the Sahabah, opening defaming them. He has also made the same
implication against the Sahabah with his position on the legality of music.
McAuliffe says music was prohibited because at that time it was used for
un-Islamic things (as if the Sahabah were more prone to un-Islamic things)
like partying, sex and sorcery (as if music is not used for these things
today) instead of worship. The actual quote from McAuliffe is:

<<Music in the hadith-- same issue-- one must fill out the social context of
the times to understand what role music usually played for them-- which was
most likely a role not of ibada, but of partying and sex and sorcery.....>>

Here he shows his Sufic tendencies, since using music in worship is something
exclusive to the Sufis. It should be mentioned that using music or any sin
in worship, or intending by that sin ibada, is a Bid'ah, a Kabirah, and
probably Kufr.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali - His translation and tafsir is the most widely read and
distributed in America. This is unfortunate, because it has misled many
people. Some people, particularly Sufis, consider it the penultimate
translation and tafsir of the Qur'an, as if it is better than the Arabic
Qur'an. Why? Because in it, Ali basically negates Heaven and Hell, saying
Jannah is a mystic metaphor for spiritual bliss, and saying Naar is simply an
analogy for spiritual separation from God or inner turmoil, which could be in
this world or after death. He also implies that Ahle Kitaab are believers
and doers of good and recipients of salvation, and even includes Buddhists,
Hindus, and other religionists in this category of Najaat. He, of course,
bases this evil concept on the ayah 2:62/5:69, interpreting it in a manner
incompatible with the Qur'an and Sunnah and fundamentals of Islam. He
mistranslates words to support his views, and generally throws the Sunnah and
views of the Salaf behind his back.

Fazlur Rahman - A man who was actually kicked out of Pakistan for his
deviancy, Fazl taught at the University of Chicago. He actually called
himself a Modernist. I have exposed some of his heretical concepts, as found
in his book "Islam", in a previous article. McAuliffe is exceptionally fond
of Fazlur Rahman's stupidity and makes no bones about it.

Karen Armstrong - She is not even Muslim, but McAuliffe refers to her books
for knowledge of Islamic history, doctrine, etc.

AbdurRaHman Lomax - He is a goofy Sufi who plies his trade in falsehoods and
distortions on the Internet. McAuliffe seems to have a reverential respect
for this arrogant man.

Nuh Haa Mim Keller - A noted Jahmi and Sufi and associate of the Kabbani
cult, he has been refuted by others. His book "Reliance of the Traveler" is
popular with Lomax and therefore is popular with McAuliffe.

Islamic Society of North America and American Muslim Council - The two
largest US organizations purported to work for Islam and Muslims, ISNA and
AMC are in fact bastions of modernism, innovation and blatant KUFR. Among
their many innovations are Interfaith dialogue (ruled Kufr by the Saudi
Ulama), participation in the American democratic system (which is Kufr Akbar
and Shirk), and participation in the US Military (including the appointment
of "Muslim" Chaplains). McAuliffe has advocated Interfaith dialogue among
the "monotheistic" religions, and has called participation in the American
government and military "healthy" aspects of living in America. With such
statements, he treads dangerously close, perhaps even crosses the line, to
Kufr Akbar (Major Kufr, which is apostacy). I'll write more about this in
another article, insha'allah.

The first thing one notices upon visiting his Web page is that a link to his
music is prominently displayed. I don't have the plug-ins to listen to the
files, but I did take a look at the lyric sheet. Here's a sampling:

May I say, just from these words, it is clear that Jeremiah McAuliffe is an
arrogant, Islamically uneducated windbag. An accursed nationalist.
Nationalism and Islam do not mix.

Jeremiah McAuliffe is also a fan of Jethro Tull, an English group who was
made famous by their song "Aqualung". Very Islamic, that. Ahem.

To conclude on this issue, I will just say that music is 100% Haram in Islam,
to involve oneself in listening to it and playing it is Fisq, and to use it
in worship is Kufr. The Rasool, may Allah bless him and give him peace,
warned of a people before the end of time who will consider musical
instruments and khamr halal. They will spend the night playing and making
merry, and in the morning they will be transformed into apes and pigs. Maybe
McAuliffe is one of them.

The next place I visited was the Islam section. Here is where McAuliffe's
deviation is confirmed, as he allows full reign to the whispers of Shaytan
and makes all sorts of evil, anti-Islamic statements.

In the article entitled "Contemporary Muslim Practice", this Jaahil writes:

<<"...this is what we found our forefathers doing..."

It is almost a cliche among converts to Islam that "Islam is the best
religion, but has the worst adherents.">>

This is actually a cliche which the people who have been Muslim all their
life tell the new converts, but never mind.

<<My experience of my Muslim
brothers and sisters since accepting Islam has been, on the whole, not
too good. As a consequence, I am holding views that many might classify
as unorthodox. Others might use more, ah, forceful adjectives! Be that
as it may, and leaving it for God to judge, it is my opinion that there
are some identifiable theological errors that underlie contemporary
Islamic practice.>>

So he admits his views are unorthodox. Unorthodox, in Islam, means something
that goes against the sources of the religion. And clearly his views go
against Qur'an and Sunnah. He admits this, yet he persists in his deviancy.
That is not the action of a Muslim. When Allah and His Messenger have
decreed a matter, it is not for a believing man or woman to have any say in
the matter.

"It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been
decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision:
if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong
Path." (Qurąaan 33:36)

God will judge on Yawm al-Qiyamah, but there is judgement in this life, and
one proof of this is the hypocrite who was executed by Umar, with whom Allah
was pleased, when he went to a soothsayer to judge his dispute with a Jew,
instead of going to Rasoolullah, may Allah bless him and give him peace.
Umar executed him and Allah revealed 4:60, until He said,

"But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee
judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance
against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction." (Qurąaan
4:65)

And Allah spoke about the hypocrites in another ayaah:

"They say, We believe in Allah and in the apostle, and we obey; but even
after that, some of them turn away; they are not (really) Believers. When
they are summoned to Allah and His apostle, in order that He may judge
between them, behold some of them decline (to come)....The answer of the
Believers, when summoned to Allah and His Messenger, in order that He may
judge between them, is no other than this: they say, "We hear and we obey";
it is such as these that will attain felicity." (Qurąaan 24:47-51)

So, what are the theological errors of contemporary Muslims, according to
self-styled Mujaddid McAuliffe?

<<*Error I. De-Mystification of the Transcendent.
*Error II. Idolization of Muhammad and the Companions.
*Error III. Development of a Priestly Caste.
*Error IV. Misinterpretation of Qur'anic Claims of "Finality".>>

From the start, we see clearly his influence by such heretics as Fazlur
Rahman and Ismail Faruqi. And the title of his Error IV gets my hackles up
immediately (Qadiani, anyone?). He continues:

<<These possible errors seem to me to stem from difficulty with the
creative tension between literal and symbolic interpretations of the
Qur'an and the hadith literature. Essentially, a problem related to a
proper balance among the aspects of experience: physical, social,
subjective and spiritual-- the Field Model-- and a fear of falling into
a gnostic-style religio-spiritual error.>>

This is his specialty - burying discussions of Islam in psychological and
philosophical erudition. He is apparently a Ph.d in Philosophy and/or
Psychology, and, as with most Modernists, thinks his degree qualifies him to
give dissertations on Islam.

Certainly, we should fear falling into a "gnostic-style religio-spiritual
error"! In fact, McAuliffe is a prime example of what we should avoid
falling into! This is fascinating to me. It reminds me of Fazlur Rahman,
who had an entire chapter in "Islam" devoted to criticizing the Modernist
movement, which he was in fact a part of.

<<...God in the Qur'an quite
clearly states that He uses metaphor and parable. Parts of the Qur'an
are described as clear, others as ambiguous. It appears that
contemporary Muslims seem to think more of the Qur'an is clearly
understood by them then the reality would seem to indicate!>>

The Qur'an says that those who have a disease in their hearts follow the
ambiguous verses. The rightly guided follow the clear ayaat. McAuliffe
seeks to change the clear ayaat into ambiguous verses. Yet Allah says:

"And We have revealed to you (O Muhammad) the Book as an exposition of every
single thing" (Qur'an 16:89)

Muslims understand the Qur'an in light of the Qur'an and then the Qur'an in
light of the Sunnah. McAuliffe prefers his intellect and secular education
to these correct methods. Perhaps that is why he doesn't understand the
Qur'an clearly.

Its about a homeless, perhaps mentally ill person, or just one of the
dregs of society.

If you spent more time with the poor and disabled maybe Allah would
change your venomous heart to one soft with compassion.

But for some reason I just can't see you cleaning up someone else's
vomit or excrement, or giving them a hot meal, or bringing them the
Good News of the Qur'anic message. Not for the sake of Allah, nor
anyone else for that matter. Not you AbuS.

You see, the Islamic Nation in its current stand is shattered because
of people who follow your path. People who have nothing to do but
think and think and squeeze their minds, and then write and write and
write just to find out at the end that all their energies have been focused
to make other muslims kuffar. These muslims targeted are people who
say: "La ilaaha illa Allah Mohammad Rasul Allah", people who pray
five times a day to the most compassionate, most forgiving, and most
forbearing, people who pay zakat and attend Hajj and fast. People
who believe in Allah, his prophets, the angles and the holy books. But,
who probably do not take the words of people like Shaikh Bin Baz or
Bin Othaymeen or other Salafis. That's why you might see them Kuffar.

It would be really helpful if we spent that time uniting instead of
spreading hate. I mean really, just who are we to call other muslims
kuffar? What is the benefit? Can't we just delay our judgments for later
on? You know, life is short.

The Saudi Ulamaa will make anyone who doesn't follow them
a Kafir. They made Shiai Muslims kuffar. They made Sufis Kuffar,
and probably anyone who isn't a Wahhabi.

The Saudi Ulamaa will consider any any kind of Islamic discipline
with emphasis on thought to be Kufur. They don't want the people
to think. They just want them to obey what they think is right.

And it's definitely not for you to make.

Please, let's focus our energy to unite Islam and Muslims. Not to spread
hate upon one another. We all have difference. Even in Islam we have
our differences. But that doesn't mean that we cannot coexist and have
a healthy, in fact, a powerful bound. See, we all believe in one god and one
prophet. If we learn how to tolerate our differences, then we can progress.
Why can't you accept people who are different than you are?

We MUST accept the theological variety of the ummah-- within the
bounds of Qur'an and sunnah, and the Five Pillars.

Unity does not mean uniformity.

This leaves out the Mutazalites who believed there were 'Two Pillars'
-- tawheed [Unity] and justice [adl] -- both derivable by rational
thinking -- of religion.

Especially when those words threaten your "tawheedian world view", right?
You don't have a problem with words when it's Fazlur Rahman or Nuh Haa Meem
Keller or AbdurRaHman Lomax who is writing them!

The point is you are out of the boundaries of Qur'an and Sunnah, and maybe
the First Pillar. You are like the Jews, claiming they are the beloved of
Allah and saved from the hellfire, while they throw the book of Allah behind
their back and refuse to rule by what Allah has sent down. As Rasoolullah
prophecied, we have followed those who came before us step by step, inch by
inch.

Actually it does. There are permissible and impermissible types of
differing, and you are engaged in the impermissible type.
