Blackwater Employees Charged With Killing Afghans

Two contractors employed by Paravant, a Blackwater subsidiary, were
indicted on murder and other charges related to shooting and killing
two Afghan citizens in Kabul on May 5. Blackwater, now known as Xe
Services, has faced a string of legal trouble due to what many have
described as the shoot-first-ask-questions-later attitude of its
employees. But criticism of excessive force by the company's employees
have usually focused on Iraq, and this marks the first time
contractors connected with Blackwater have been charged for action
during the war in Afghanistan. An attorney for the employees, aged 27
and 29, insists they shouldn't have been charged because they acted in
self-defense. While the company has seen its legal bills pile up in
recent years, it has also received some good news lately. Most
importantly, a judge dismissed criminal charges last week against five
Blackwater guards who had been accused of killing 14 Iraqis in a
Baghdad square in 2007.
