I thought it will be of interest to all of us to know about different clans and their
origins. Any comments and additions/deletions are appreciated.

Following is a text taken from book "Canadian of Pakistani origins" by
Sadiq Awan

Origin of A W A N Clan
------------------------

The Awans posses the salt range region of Punjab and live as land owners
(maliks) and farmers in the Jhelam, Rawalpindin, Hazara, Peshawar,
Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Shahpur, Gujrat and Sialkot districts.

They are Indo-Aryans of Scythian/Parthian/Pahlawa (Iranian) origin, who first
entered India in the 5th century B.C. as Khshatrapawans of the
Iranion Achaemede Empire and then vonones of the Indo-Parthian empire about 30
B.B . At one period of Indian history they were the dominent ruling people
over a considerable are along the upper and lower Indus river.

According to history they embraced Islam between the 7th and 10th
centuries A.D. They are reputed to be hardworking people. The Royal
Shansavani family of Ghor was an offshoot of this clan.

Awans are related to Bawands of Iran. They had made several high
level marriages with the arabs and the Seljuks in the early Islamic
era.

Dr. Bellow in his historical book entitled the "Ethnology of Afghanistan"
placed the awans as part of the Isa Khel (Assak).

Awan is also a contration of Pahlawan, meaning the political grandees
and military leaders. According to the Encylclopedia of Islam
the Shansawanis of Ghor also had the military tiltle of Pahlawani.
In the districts mentioned as above the awans still enjoy
considerable economic, educational, religious and political
influence.

The former governer of West Pakistan, Khan of Kala Bagh, was a
member of Awan clan. Shah Jah Awal of Kharkot hazara was a famous
ruling ancestor of the Awan family of Rashaban, Tanawal.

The Awans of Pakhli (Shinkiari) in the upper Valley, as former
rulers, trace their origin to Arsace (Ardawan), who was received
by Alaxender the great as chief of Urasa at Texila.

The clan moved to lower - Tanawal towards Hazara plain via upper
Tanawal for economic and political reasons in the 14th century
A.D.

mind. I appreciate and will contribute information as much as I can of
the clans/tribes that I'm familiar with or have info. about. To get such
cultural info.(and you know, it is rare) is the only reason I checkout this
newsgroup.

I think you are missing some of the very important areas where Awans are
settled. These are Lahore, Sargoda, Mainwali, Gujranwala and Jhang etc.
There is also an organizataion under the name Al-Awan with it branches in
all the four provinces. They publish a monthly newsletter and have
established a colony in Lahore under the name of "Awan Colony"where most
of the residence are awan. Their annaul convention are well attended.

It would be a good idea for those interested to subscribe their magazine.
I don't have their address etc. now but I can arrange if someone is
interested.

The thing is, so many syyeds are actually those who took birth on
thursday. A lot of Abbasis are in fact "Dhoond" a hindu in origin. Bamba
the rajput tribe claims to be Ummayadh (Arab). Ghakkar rajputs are now
Keyani (Irani). This is a typical subcontinental caste-based mentality to
take the pride of being Arab/Irani/Afghani etc. Take pride of who you are
rather than who you are not

Awn is arabic work meaning helper and awan is its plural meaning helpers.awans are descendent of HAZRAT ALI THE FOURTH CALIPH OF ISLAM.They come to subcontinent in abbassid period.there are two qutab shah.one is awn qutab shah and other the other is qutab haider shah.syed awn qutab shah is from HAZRAT ABBASS ALAMDAR and syed qutab haider shah is from MUHAMMAD AL AKBAR known as MUHAMMAD BIN HANAFIA.both are the sons of HAZRAT ALI.it is also a probability that awan qutab shah is from HAZRAT HASSAN BIN ALI.HE Is also the relative of HAZRAT ABDUL QADIR JAILANI.the both qutab earlier settled with their families in afghanistan and letteron moved to salt range.but they are still present in a large in kpk trible area and afghanistan and also in India and other parts of pakistan.actual awans are very respectable brave wealthy and having all good qualities which a HASHMI may be have.but unfortunately many so-called awans also can be seen.No doubt AWANS are HASNI or ALVI HASHMI SYED and posses special nobility among the MUSLIMS.
