Upon arrival through Kahanda Kanda’s unassuming gates, you have to
admit that you have indeed entered a very beautiful place. The tea
bushes are everywhere and the buildings are all done tastefully,
seamlessly blending into it’s natural surroundings. The bright orange
wall and tower were a great touch, giving a sophisticated yet ethnic
feel to what would otherwise be like so many other places in the Galle
area.
Kahanda Kanda rather beautifully translates into 'yellow moon
mountain', and is a chic boutique hotel in a working tea plantation.
Once the home of Englishman and interior designer George Cooper, this
hilltop retreat has been receiving quite a lot of praise as being one
of the top small hotels in the area.

"Kahanda Kanda is a seriuosly excellent holiday destination. Our party
of four all loved it and did not leave the resort once over the 3 days
as we spent the time swimming eating reading relaxing...exactly what
is needed on holidays. The food is a culinary delight and any request
was deliverd promptly and with a minumim of fuss. The service
throughout our stay was extremely efficient and friendly. The rooms
were amazing, each room has an outlook and is more like your own home
than a hotel room. The rooms are large and very well appointed,
decorator items, books. lounges , beautiful linen etc all add up to
make this and exceptional experience."
"Traveling to Sri Lanka with an American Friend used to nothing less
than 5 star acomm. We reseached and read where to stay in Sri Lanka on
line. One thing we didn't take it was the THREE AND A HALF HOUR
tedious car journey from Colombo airport. Plus the resort is a 25 min
car ride out of Galle itself in a hill side over looking a tea
plantation to a lake. Once you have un packed in your individually
designed villa with it's 4 poser bed and netting. The privicy and
surroundings are totally with it. The chef called 'Fous' is of the
highest standard and very accommodating as are all the staff eagerly
watched by the ever present (very English) owner Mr. George Cooper who
has designed the whole property. So, it is like being a guest at his
estate - a real treat. So are the staff. The evenings air is full of
monkey , peacock and bird call with the most spectacular sun sets over
the lake. Your in for a treat if you do stay here. Definatley worth
the three and a half hour drive to see a real part of Sri Lanka way
from the tourist trail."
"My wife and I found this to be one of the best luxury boutique hotels
we have stayed at, anywhere. Its location is perfect: convenient to
but just a bit away from the buzz of Galle and the coast, on a hill
that affords views and a refreshing breeze, amidst tea, palms, a lush
greenery. The food is an excellent mix of bright, fresh Western and
Asian styles. The styling of the rooms and grounds is well documented
in these reviews and in various articles and books on Asian resort
design, but is thankfully neither overwrought nor self-conscious. But
what really sets this hotel apart is the personal touch of the owner,
George Cooper, who really goes above and beyond in all respects to
insure his guests are pampered and get the most out of their time at
Kahanda. Add to that the warmth of his staff and you have the perfect
holiday destination. A wonderful choice for anyone looking to spend
time in southern Sri Lanka."
"This little haven should be known as the Secret Treasure of Sri
Lanka!! Kahanda kanda is an exceptional boutique hotel hidden in the
hills behind galle. Everything about this magical place is special and
is certainly a notch above anywhere else we have stayed during our
travels.
From the moment you arrive at Kahanda Kanda you know you have arrived
somewhere just that little bit different from the rest: from the fresh
flower necklaces and coconut drink you are presented with on arrival
to the incredible immaculate suites in which no surface has gone
untouched from the artistic flair of the fabulous owner George. He and
his wonderful team strive to make you feel like you are in a home away
from home and they certainly succeed.
The views from every angle of the hotel are amazing and look out onto
the green lush tea trees and beyond onto koggala lake. The sunsets are
not like anything else we have seen – just beautiful. From lazing
around the stunning pool to bike riding through the tea plantations –
any activity your heart desires can be accommodated. The staffs are
willing to go to all extremes to ensure you are satisfied!
The delicious food is just another aspect worth mentioning. From the 5
course breakfast menu to the scrumptious 4 course Thai extravaganza
meal we had on new years eve – all the food was fresh, tasty and
extremely well presented. You certainly were not left to go hungry.
All in all a wonderful finish to our Sri Lankan holiday – only regret
is that we did not stay for longer! Cannot recommend enough – worth
every penny!!"
"My wife and I spent three beautiful days at KK in October last year
and loved it very much - the food and service was perfect and the
setting a respite from the madness of the Sri Lankian roads which
drive me mad - the new freeway will make KK even closer to Colombo.
Happily reccomned KK to anyone and we travel a lot!!"
