Fiji... freedom or freefall?

The government in Fiji has taken yet another step towards
independence.
It might have been a tense situation. But this is Fiji.
We visited Levuka between the Speight coup and the current one.
it was interesting to note that one business, a boarding house had
been burnt down. it was owned by a Fijian family [whom we had met
previously]. This family was of Chinese European and Fijian descent.
More ominous and perhaps more telling was the fact that the Masonic
Lodge had been razed too. To me this was the signature of the
charistmatic movement who hate the Masonic Lodge with a fervour the
previous generations of religious zealots had reserved for the papacy.
So it was no surprise to learn that during the term of the Qarase
government the charistmatic healing preacher from the USA Benny Hinn
had a rally in Fiji to which half of the population had attended.
The Methodist Church is the main church in Fiji.
The charges of corruption against the Qarase government have never
been proved. Recent information indicates that his government merely
handed out the prizes of victory to its own supporters.
However more serious was the electoral system. electors were not
spread evenly across all electorates. So in some electorates people
had the voting power 10 times that of people in other electorates.
The Fiji Club in New Zealand continue still to support Cr Bainimarama.
What troubles me most that there is no news coming out of mainstream
Fiji. The media being sent from Suva appeared to be glued to their
chairs. There has been no reporting, interviews from within Fijian
Society, and the wider Fiji.

Well, there's certainly going to be even less now, with the strict media
clampdown in place, Government overseers installed in newspaper and TV
offices, and so on.

There is said to be two ways into Fiji.
Our old timers went there by boat...
mainly during the last war.
Today we go by plane mostly.
But the only way into Fiji is by kawa, or kava.

The family has a special relationship with Fiji.
Cr Bainimarama has declared martial law, sacked the
judiciary and devalued by 20%.
Fairly prudent moves... I watch the film clips. The conduct of
the troops are impeccable. Many will have served overseas
in much more troubled climes than Fiji.
Frank Bainimarama has assumed executive authority, and
given his brief, he is acting in the best interests of Fiji.
The media at best are always in search of "a story". This time
they became "the story" along with the others I mentioned.
Sometimes things have to be broken in the interests of policy.
Today on national radio, to Shaun Plunket Cr Bainimarama
outlined the process Fiji is to follow on its path to true
democracy.

Nothing....if Cr Bainimarama falls over the most likely Fiji will
fall over...
we are told very very little in depth about the situation in NZ,
I am prepared to alter my opinion. However there is no debate
in the issues.
and you should know debate is the handmaiden to information
and free speech.

I got a url on the National Programme last Friday.
It leads you to the Fiji bloggers who apparently
have curtains drawn and are broadcasting the
facts to the world. The main one Intelligentsiya
is your typical Libertarian web page with only
a modicum of Fijian content.
To be honest if all or any of those websites went
down i would be worried.
The other main dissenter is the former Commander
of Land Forces who is exiled in Australia.
This recent development in the coup has been much
more disciplined, at least so far...
