In researching our family history, we have come across an old Swedish book
which was published circa 1875. With our rudimentary knowledge of the
language, we are stumped by the meaning of the word "undantagsman" which
appears in the sentence "Här är han skriven hos en undantagsman Nils Asp". If
anyone could supply us with a translation of this word, we would be highly
appreciative.

undantagsman, an older man that let the son or son in law take over the
farm. Instead he want a pension
in natura and a place to live.
I have tried to copy a link to a swedish-english dictionary
that I use a lot. / Siv

Hej Terry!

When someone sold his farm in the old times they could get an "undantag"
which is the right to live for free at their former property or a right to
food from that property. It's like a pension, an insurance for old age. Often
when a son took over his parents farm, they moved out to the "undantaget".
An "undantagsman" could therefore have been a person who sold his farm and
still lived on the property somewhere.

Good luck with your research,
Tabitha
