I BUDGET 2001: South tops health allocation
By Jide Ajani, Political Editor
LAGOS— The year 2001 budgetary allocation of President Olusegun Obasanjo to
the Health Sector, specifically the Departments of Hospital Services (Teaching
Hospitals), development of permanent sites, installation of medical equipment,
special refurbishment fund for hospitals, centres of medical excellence, other
health institutions and training projects, as well as special programme care
centres.
The combined total for institutions in the south is N5,565,000,000 while the
North got a total of N5,120,400,000.
This calculation, however, is without prejudice to some collective allocation
of funds to health institutions both in the North and South offering similar
services.
For instance, some allocations under the National Agency for Food Drugs
Administration and Control (NAFDAC) with N220,000,000, National Health
Insurance Scheme, with N230,000,000, National Programme on Immunisation with
N2,960,610,000, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, with
a whopping N7,000,000,000, were spread across states in a nondescript manner,
and therefore could not be shared properly among the states.
Those with a clear cut breakdown are as follows:
Northern Nigeria
North Central -N2,800,000,000
North East - N750,000,000
North West - N1,570,400,000
Southern Nigeria
South West - N2,280,000,000
South East - N1,755,000,000
South South - N1,530,000,000
