LAGOS, Jan 18 (Reuter) - Nigerian ruler General Sani Abacha's home was
thronged by mourners on Thursday after his eldest son was killed in a plane
crash, witnesses said.
``The family compound is filled with sympathisers,'' said Alhaji Musa, a
lawyer in the northern Nigerian city of Kano where the presidential plane
crashed on Wednesday night killing 14 people including Ibrahim Abacha.
He added that people had been flocking since daybreak to the house on
Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Fagge part of Kano.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the military administrator
of Kano State, Colonel Mohammed Wase, had declared Thursday and Friday public
holidays in the state to mourn the late Ibrahim Abacha.
An official statement in Kano urged the people, especially civil servants
to use the occasion to pray, NAN reported.
Family sources said the body of the younger Abacha would be taken to the
palace of the Emir (traditional chief) of Kano for Moslem prayers and burial
later on Thursday.
Other casualities of the crash included Bello Dangote, a member of a Kano
family that dominates the sugar trade in Nigeria, Musa said.
Officials at the Aso Rock presidential villa in the capital Abuja in
central Nigeria said the incident shocked the country's leaders but had no
immediate information on the Abacha family itself.
The independent Lagos television station DBN reported that the crash
happened on the outskirts of Kano and that all 14 people on board were
members of the Abacha household.
Airport sources said the plane was from the presidential fleet but
declined to give details pending the outcome of an official investigation.
They said it had been travelling from Lagos, the main business centre in
southwest Nigeria, and it crashed a few minutes before it was to land at its
destination.
``The cause of the accident is not yet determined and the bodies have
been evacuated from the wreckage,'' said a source at Kano airport.
The younger Abacha, the first of the military ruler's 10 children, was a
28-year-old businessman in Kano, the family's hometown.
He was educated at the University of Maidugari in northeastern Nigeria
and official sources said he was involved in several business activities,
including aviation.
There were four plane crashes in Nigeria last year that caused
fatalities.
Abacha took power in November 1993 in the aftermath of chaos that
followed the annulment of a presidential election to restore democracy.
He has faced a series of problems since then including strained relations
with Western countries over the hanging last November of nine minority rights
campaigners for murder in defiance of worldwide appeal for clemency.

I would like to add the name of Omieba Princewill, to list of casualties.
He hailed from Rivers state and was my friend.
A dynamic young man, who many will remember as the main force behind
several nightclubs in the capital, the latest being Daniels, and City
Tavern.
Softly spoken and always willing to give a helping hand, he will be greatly
missed by many, myself included.
May his soul rest in peace.
