The Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar , reconstituted the federal
cabinet on Thursday.
Nine former ministers in the administration of the late head of state,
General Sani Abacha, were among the 31 people appointed into the new Federal
Executive Council last night.
They are former Minister of Sports, Air Commodore Samson Emeka Omeruah
(rtd), former Communi-cations Minister, Maj. General Patrick Aziza, former
Minister of Industries, Chief (Mrs.) Nike Akande, former Minister of
Commerce and Tourism, Dr. Emmanuel Udogwu, former Minister of State for
Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Buhari Bala and former Minister of Justice Alhaji
Abdullahi Ibrahim.
Others are former Minister of Science and Technology, Major General Sam
Momah, former Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Hamza Sakwa, and former
Minister of Works and Housing Major General G.A. Mohammed.
Other prominent Nigerians appointed are, former Works and Housing Minister,
Major General Mamman Kontagora (rtd), former Provisional
Ruling Council (PRC) member, Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni, the President of
Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, former
Minister of State for Aviation in the Second Republic, Mr. John Nwodo Jr.,
former Ambassador to Israel, Ambassador I.C. Olisiemeka, and activist, Mr.
Samuel Olaiya Oni.
The rest are Alhaji Saka Sa'adu, Dr. Jonathan Madugu, Captain Beribe Briggs,
AVM Cannes Umenwaliri, Princess A.O. Oguneye, Alhaji Ismaila Usman, Mr.
Akpan Wilson Etukudo, Prof. Debo Adeyemi, Dr. Abubakar Ali and Prof. Musa
Yakubu.
The remaining are: Mr. Bello Suleman, Mr. S. G. Ogbago, Dr. Laraba Gambo
Abdullahi, Mr. Ambrose Fesse and Alhaji Alfa Wali.
Their portfolios will be assigned at the swearing-in ceremony billed for the
Presidential Villa Abuja today at 11am.
The erstwhile 33-member Federal Executive Council was dissolved by the Head
of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar on Wednesday July 8.
The late General Abacha had constituted the cabinet on December 15, 1997. It
was reconstituted after he dissolved his second cabinet on November 17.
The council had comprised 24 ministers and nine ministers of state.
Those who lost their positions include: Chief Michael Ani, (Finance) Alhaji
Baba Gana Kingibe (Power and Steel), Chief Tom Ikimi (External Affairs), Lt.
Gen. Jeremiah Useni (FCT), Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu (Internal Affairs), Chief
Dan Etete (Petroleum Resources), Alhaji Uba Ahmed (Labour), Chief Ayo
Ogunlade (National Planning)
