Further hearing in the alleged theft of 25.9 million pounds against the
former Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Olusegun Olusemo, has
been adjourned till the 16th and 17th of March 1998.

This followed the inability of the trial judge, Chief Magistrate Mwada
Balami, to resume sitting in Abuja on Monday due to the death of the
wife of his colleague, Justice Husseini Muktar of the Abuja High Court.

Chief Magistrate Balami who arrived office briefly on Monday was said to
have travelled to Kaduna on official capacity as a member of the
judicial delegation to pay a condolence visit to Justice Husseini
Muktar, over the death of his wife.

Mr. Olusemo, now standing trial before an Abuja Magistrate's court, was
at the last sitting of the court. The former Accountant General and five
other persons were arraigned before the court for charges ranging from
conspiracy, attempted fraud, negligence of duty, forgery and breach of
trust offences contrary to sections 167, 315, 363 and 366 of the penal
code of 1995.

The other accused persons are Udu Jimoh, Andrew Onyesu, Julius Odeyemi,
Umaru Edota and Akpoga Ella, a former staff of Federal Ministry of
Industry.

Neither Mr. Olusemo nor any of the other five accused persons were
present in court at the adjournment on Monday.

Among those who have so far testified before the court are Finance
Minister, Chief Anthony Ani, former Secretary to the Government of the
Federation, Alhaji Aminu Saleh, Alhaji Alkaleri and Mrs. Iremire.

COMMENTARIES
============

The reputable government of Sani Abacha can hardly be accused of not
doing anything about corruption in Nigeria, as George Ayitteh said about
2 weeks ago, if we look at most of the opposition I'm getting, it's as
if they want to protect the fraudsters.

Is it surprising that all fraudsters in this case are from a particular
region of the country. Need I say more. We also heard of a netter
accusing Jakande of embezzling funds in PPA. Why are they like this?

O'dua or no O'dua Shehu should not be ignored and he should not be totally
condemned . The fact is, Yorubas have been abusing the Hausas for a long
time and now they feel that time has come to retaliate and retaliation has
been going on for a long time only the Yoruba people are too academic and
arrogant to know or accept.
To go a step further, I have personally documented some facts, for example,
when it come to fake product, the Ibo man is the boss. When it come to fake
document, the Ibos, Yorubas and the old Bendel are supper. The Hausa man? he
is a commission agent of the federal government money. Remember failed
banks? the Hausa man was the chairman due to his connection to the power
that give licenses he get commission for it and the banking gurus from the
south will do the real stealing. Majority of Nigerians know this only we are
too tribalistic to accept it.

Alhaji Shehu Momoh,

Is it GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT?

If the accused are tried fairly and found guilty they deserve a long jail
term.

On your commentaries, "reputable government of Sani Abacha can hardly be

accused of not
doing anything about corruption in Nigeria, as George Ayitteh said about 2
weeks ago, if we look at most of the opposition I'm getting, it's as if they
want to protect the fraudsters"

Do you care to comment on what our government have done to date on the
report of Dr. Pius Okigbo on our Central Bank, how the Babangida/Abacha
regime "accounted" for the missing $12.2 Billion accrued during the Gulf
war?

Most of what have been written on this missing money has never been denied
or disproved by the "reputable" government of Abacha. Common sense dictates
that any "war" on cleaning out fraud, etc. in our country should include
something this staggering. Instead our "reputable" government has focused
on civil servants, bankers, and other members of the civil society for PR
purposes. Of all the retired Generals and military men who served and are
still serving as chairmen of these failing banks, do you know of one that
has been hauled before the so called "failed Bank Tribunal"?

According to Dr. Nwankwo's book, "Nigerians as Outsiders", "The Okigbo panel
also proved that over $12.2 billion (one hundred and twenty-two billion US
Dollars) oil money, which revenue accrued to the Federal Government mostly
during the Gulf war of 1991 could not be accounted for. That Panel
demonstrated that the transfer of such funds into special accounts were
fraudulent; that their disbursement was virtually criminal; that no order
was imposed in their periodic withdrawal; that the projects they had for
service were extra-budgetary; and that till date no one can precisely say
what the money was used for, what is left, where it is, and such like. The
financial policies, thwarted the regulatory mechanisims of the Central Bank
and disbursed that money as it deemed fit in an unaccountable manner."

So Shehu Momoh, when you write of reputable governments, always remember our
Dr. Gen. Abacha's government has never been one and will never be one. The
days of these tyrants are indeed numbered. You can continue to sing their
praises to high heaven, it changes nothing as the day of reckoning is closer
than you think.

Shehu or whoever you are, would you care to know you are overloading my
e-mail account.

Since I woke up this morning, I have received about 15 messages from you,
all of them written in poor taste denigrating people who have done nothing
to warrant your unprovoked attack.

The issue you brougt up is not even worth debating. You keep going on and
on, as if the man had already been convicted. Are you normal at all?

I normally don't join issues with demented entities like you. But why
should I be getting tons of e-mail messages from you, on a topic which is
not only baseless but unedifying?

My final word to you is this, get a life, stay away from drugs (or whatever
it is you are on)!

It is as if, you are saying the Yoruba man should steal OUR money.

What do you mean time has come to retaliate? You are saying it is time
for Yoruba men to steal our money.

How can we build a prosperous nation with ideas like this, still being
voiced in public.

So Yoruba men should steal our money? George Ayitteh are you listening
to this thread.

Dear Shehu,

I absolutely agree with you that it is morally and professionally wrong
for the acountant general to embezzle our money though he is still
alledge to have done that.

what you did wrong is protraying this as if he being yoruba is the reason
behind the alledge looting hence you have to accept that the subject use
in this matter is not appropriate;a netter has even suggested a subject
that seem acceptable.

If you are out to retaliate as Richard observed then you probably chose a
wrong approach because no single ethnic group is clean but the rate might
be different because one ethnic group happens to occupy most of the
government office plus the opportunity to steal.

I beleive you have made a big deal of the issue and it's high time to
relax or i will start releasing facts about other Nigerians involved in
the raping of Nigeria.

see ya.

Why do you keep skipping the fact that we are referring to the office of
the Accountant General - the person whose sole responsibility is to curb
this sort of bad behaviour.

Look at the amount involved too. 26 million pounds can do a lot for
Nigerians, this is my beef and not the fact that he is Yoruba. I am not
surprised, it is the amount!

Your ethnic loyalty trap is blinding your sense of reason here.

There is no doubt that many Nigerians have stolen money from the people, but
to use blanket statement like this will never solve the problem.
As you know, there are people like Tai Solarin, Olikoye and Beko
Ransome-Kuti. Gani Fawehinmi, late Awojobi just to mention a few.
We must remember that when it comes to stealing Nigerian money, no one is
clean especially the so called major tribes.

Kehinde,

I think you should just do what a lot of people did to the "wake and
smell the coffee man". I for one took him as a badly trained clown that
ends up annoying people instead of making them laugh.
It is unbecoming to take such a person seriously. Most people of such
disposition have a fixed expiry date. They will burn out in time but
faster if just leave them alone.

However for the seriousness of the issue with which this man is joking,
I think a comment is necessary.
At the dawn of the strangest political experiment we have had in
Nigeria. This "act" by Shehu reminds us of a problem. We all tend to
treat serious crimes lightly because of ethnicity. Are we no longer in
position to condemn evil just because it it evil. Does it matter who
steals from Naija? A thief is a thief!. Thank God several Netters have
condemned this act if the accused is found guilty.
The fact that some ignorant person steals should not encouraged more
enlightened people to join them in their evil ways.

Have a nice day!

Ire O!

Netters,
I think it is the height of incivility to resort to name-calling, and the
use of insulting language when responding to posts that we disagree with.
This forum confers on us the right of free expression (something most of us
wouldn't get in our country) and we should make the best use of it.
Referring to another as an "idiot" simply because he holds a view not in
consonance with yours shows exactly what you'd do if you were at the seat of
power. Yet we condemn the authority back home for cracking down on the
opposition!
This unmitigated intolerance must be curtailed on this list. Let's act
civilized, at least for once.
We're a 'brotherhood' (or 'sisterhood'). Let's live in the spirit of
give-and-take.
