I am sending this letter on behalf of a friend and STC alumnus,
Francis Ik. Onaga. The fax originated from the STOBA office in
Port Harcourt. STOBA stands for St. Teresa's Old Boys' Association.
St. Teresa's College Nsukka (STC), located a few blocks north of
the University of Nigeria Nsukka, is one of the premier BOYS'
secondary schools in Nigeria.
I am a proud alumnus, wrapping up the last two years of my
secondary education at STC after the Nigerian civil war.
Francis informed me that the quality of the fax from STOBA was
poor, and it was nice of him to have retyped the message for
this circulation. I consider this preamble important so there
is no confusion as to what STOBA wrote and what is being reported.
The message, however, is clear. Thanks.
Cyril

October 30, 1998
To: All Ex-Students of St. Teresa's College Nsukka
From: The National Secretary of STOBA (St. Teresa's Old Boys Assoc.)
Subject: Fund Raising Campaign To Renovate and Restore Dilapidated Buildings
Dear Alumni:
The National Secretary of St. Teresa's Old Boys' Association (STOBA) sent
a very important message to all of us that were graced to pass through
the college. The message is very simple -- help to restore and renovate
some of the damaged buildings especially the one upstair in the school.
A decision was reached by the executive arm of STOBA in a meeting held
at Onitsha to commence with re-roofing and replacement of old windows
of the upstair. The cost was estimated at five hundred thousand naira or
six thousand US dollars.
For those who may not be aware, the current principal of the school is
Rev. Fr. (Dr) John Martin Chikani. Fr. Chikani has strong support from
STOBA. Discipline and academic excellence are once more associated with
STC. If you would like to talk to the principal, his telephone number is
234-42-770053. Moreover, the national secretary of STOBA is Raphael Ugwu.
Ralph is based in Port Harcourt and can be reached by fax through another
active STOBA member Nze A.N. Ugwu. The fax number is 234-84-237127.
Let us not only try to meet this financial demand from STOBA, let us also
use this opportunity to organize in groups and regions for posterity and fun.
As an aside, we understand from STOBA that Rev. Fr. Butler resides
in Florida. You will recall that Fr. Butler was the first Principal
of STC.
The first step to achieving our objective and any other demands from
STOBA is to compile the names of all alumni. The database will be used
to estimate individual contribution towards realizing the immediate
objective. All informantion on the old boys in the West and Southwest
USA should be directed to Mike Ugwu (310)672-5808. Those in the Northeast
and Southeast should send their information to Francis Onaga
(732)390-0969 or by fax (732)390-9253.Others not covered here should
get organized too. We suspect we should have people in Europe and
elsewhere.
Upon complete database information, a minimum amount will be determined
and the contributions donated to STOBA hopefully by easter of 1999.
God bless and thanks immensely,
Francis Onaga

As an aside, Francis will hopefully and shortly be on-line. For now,
any message to Francis can be routed through me (Cyril U. Orji,
cyo...@aol.com). I intend to work actively with Francis on this
effort.
UP STC!
Remember STC has always been number 1. And before
anyone starts to contest this, remember that Kendo jumped ship from
CKC to join wonder boy Ogbueze in STC -- which all made the
1971 academicals possible. I think some people are still tearing
their agbada in Lagos and Kwara state :-)
(I'm out of here, and let the missiles fly ...)
UP STC!

I shall respond properly at Odabro on the 4th. I rest my case.
See you there and then.

MOE.
Since you wondered about Okongwu......OMGS Nnewi, "Lux et Veritas"
Private schools did a lot of booking, to keep the govt. and the mission
schools on their toes.
It is also true that some of the boys stayed closer to religion, than
the "mission" schools.
But, hehehe, some did socialize big time. Never heard of the Okongwu
MAN O'WAR BAY CLUB? They got around everywhere. Even so, the Man O'War
Bay club was surpassed by the school choir and the debating society.
Both these two kept St.Catherine's Nkwerre an exclusive property of
Okongwu.
It was not tough for private schools like Okongwu. Not at all.
Then came the police whistles that ended the pogron. The whistles turned
out to be flying bullets from bad shots from bastardly Gowon's police in
military uniform.
Boys became transformed into men, in defence of the fatherland. BIAFRA!
Ya diba.
