Adey,

He is a radical, anti-government muslim leader who however have so far
restricted his movement to calling on Muslims to join his sect. He has
thousands of followers mostly among the Muslim youth in the north as well as
tertiary institutions who are frustrated with the way things are going in
the country. He is also antagonistic to the traditional muslim authority in
the north particularly the emirs who he accuses as using the name of
religion for selfish reasons unlike their founding father the Sheik Othman
danfodio. This is what most people believe to be the reasons for his
frequent arrests especially the current one that was said to have been
instigated by the leading Muslim leaders in the north who warn Abacha of the
impending danger El-zakzaky poses to the traditional and religious
authorities in the north. He is also alleged to be the leader of the Shia
sect in Nigeria though he never said it openly and the vast majority of his
followers belong to the Sunni sect. This is what I know about him.

Hello Doc,

Thanks!!

I must confess that I am always confused about what he truly stands for
and/or, what he aims to achieve, that is, within (the realm of) Nigeria.
I mean, if he professed to be a "radical Muslim Leader", why then would
he be "anti-Nigerian Government", which for the most part is always Pro-
Islamic beliefs? I think something is very amiss here... Why else would
these "Muslim Traditionalists" go all out to have him silence, or place
him in incommunicado (with his followers)?

One may argue that Sheikh El-Zak Zaki is more of a liberal, or moderate.
That is, rather than a radical Muslim. No? I am willing to bet that, he
probably preaches the seperation of State (i.e. Politics) from Religion.

Prince Adey.

Fellow Netters,

I believe the Nigerian Police should be call to order, why wasting peoples
lives because of their convictions, there is surely a better way to manage a
riot that is non violent. At least the news did not alleged that the
demonstrators are carrying guns.

What kind of a country where people cannot exercise their freedom of
association or speech? What exactly is the crime of El Zak Zak apart from
criticizing the status quo especially in the north?

I recognize that the Nigerian Human Rights community have been standing-in
for this guy but in my opinion they have not been loud enough. If the
government have a case against this sect and its leader they should charge
him to court and let him cool off in jail.
