Please allow me piggyback on your posting to seek clarification to a
term recently applied to Ndi Igbo which I think is in error or maybe
that I do not understand. Are Ndi Igbo a nation or are they a tribe
within a nation called Nigeria?

Here we are a nation of over 27 million people
> (Ndigbo) without a national anthem.

Since Ndi Igbo do not have an independent territorial space and a
constitutionally instituted government recognized internationally, is
appropriate to refer to them as a nation?
I understand that nations can exist in the mind without sovereignty,
and that nations can be a collection of diverse peoples under one
geo-political set up, and yet can also exist as other understandable
anomalies justified by persuasion, nostalgia, and sentiments chosen
as a bonding device by people wanting nation status. As many times as
I have read on this net of Ndi Igbo being referred to as a nation, I
don't seem to be able to make the connection. I will appreciate
someone clarifying this issue for me.
Happy Weekend.

Subject: Re: IGBO NATIONAL ANTHEM
You have a valid question. Let me attempt to give my "own" simple
definition of Igbo nation:..." people bound together in thesame
geographical area by common language and culture". Sovereignty is not a
consideration.
Webster and Oxford dictionary can define it as they wish. For me, this
is it.

BIAFRAN NATIONAL ANTHEM
Land of the Rising Sun
Land of the rising sun, we love and cherish,
Beloved homeland of our brave heroes;
We must defend our lives or we shall perish,
We shall protect our hearts from all our foes;
But if the price is death for all we hold dear,
Then let us die without a shred of fear.
Hail to Biafra, consecrated nation,
Oh fatherland, this be our solemn pledge:
Defending thee shall be a dedication,
Spilling our blood we'll count a privilege;
The waving standard which emboldens the free
Shall always be our flag of liberty.
We shall emerge triumphant from this ordeal,
And through the crucible unscathed we'll pass;
When we are poised the wounds of battle to heal,
We shall remember those who died in mass;
Then shall our trumpets peal the glorious song
Of victory we scored o'er might and wrong.
Oh God, protect us from the hidden pitfall,
Guide all our movements lest we go astray;
Give us the strength to heed the humanist call:
To give and not to count the cost' each day;
Bless those who rule to serve with resoluteness,
To make this clime a land of righteousness.
To reply Maazi Gregg his question on whether ndiigbo is a nation of its own
or not. the answer is just simple YES! of course what we call ourselves is
what the world will call us, I think it is insulting to continue referring
to ndi Igbo as a "TRIBE" after all why do we have to waste our time with
this our discussions and so on if we are not fighting to be recognised as an
official INDEPENDENT NATION which we have and always will be.
Nya gazie nu ndi nwe mmadu.

Gregg nwanna:
In my opinion, all elements of your characterizations of a nation status
fully describe the people. We are a nation within nations.
