Alagba,
Listening to a cultural conservative like Haruna Ishola is sometimes an
ugly reminder of the cultural dislocation I feel in this part of the
world. Let me identify the animals and give Jelili another free
lesson:-)

1. Ogida n = Is a nickname for Ekun (Tiger) Amotekun is leopard
2. Lagido is a nickname for Obo (Monkey)
3. Imado is another name for Warthog it also called Turuku
4. Ajanaku= is a nickname for Erin (Elephant)
5. Akata= Hyena (yes)
6. Inaki = Baboon
7. Ekun= Tiger
8. Ikoko=Jackal
9. Elegbede = Gorilla

I was struck that the song..."Niwaju, niwaju la o ma lo" (the irony of
the song, I was actually not making any progress on the road) contained
not less than 20 references to animals. Most of which if I ran in to
them
on Baltimore-Washington Parkway, I will have problem recognizing them.
Let me give you a sampler and all in one track!
1. Ogidan=Lion or Panther?
2. Lagido
3. Imado
4. Ajanaku= Lion?
5. Akata= Hyena
6. Inaki
7. Ekun= Female Lion?
8. Ikoko
9. Elegbede

What do you say?

Folks like Baba L'Egba does remind one about how much we are throwing
away.
Physical identification of these animals is my biggest problem. I guess
it will be asking for too much for our Gvt to construct zoos and parks
when human being can't get clean water to drink.
Abo mi re o.

PS..Many of these animals have double or triple names dependending on the
contextural usage.
Like..ori ajanaku kise eru omode. ajanaku koja , mori nkan firi. Now, who
will name his/her child elephant...erin , but our people goes by Mr/Mrs.
Ajanaku. OBJ even had one in his Cabinet, again the context.
ologini (chetah or loepard) tajo de , ekute epa ramo...but ologini in
domestic situation is a house cat...again the context.
ogidan ki se egbe lagido. ogidan koni se baaba, ki aja debe lo ge run.
imado iba sebi elede, aba lu je. Eru joba, ilu ku kan.
omo Owa, omo Ekun
kise eru akata, ki akata pa edie kotun pa eledie, e wo orisa.....I can't
get this one
gbogbo igi ti elegbeje ba fowo ba, didun lo ndun
kini igbin yio dan wo nto leri pelu ikoko

I am not sure what kind of music our resident naijanet music man, Jelli,
listern to. He is a disappointment in reminding us to listern to some of
our prolific artists. He ought to know that Napster had not scratched the
surface of ...music Africaine.

Good observation, Stevek
However, The same thing applies to the Lion. People in places it doesn't
exist (at least in mordern times) also have names for it and revere its
majesty. The list includes China, Japan etc.
I believe the house of Windsor or some other popular British family has a
Lion on their coat of Arms...

Indeed, I have wondered about that.

A character, as remote in antiquity (i.e., before the English came to
Africa) as Sir Lancelot Du Lake (of King Arthur's Court) used a lion on his
shield and on his castle at Joyous Gard (or so we are told). I believe King
Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) also used the lion for his coat-of-arms.

But in the case of lions (and sundry savannah felines) and elephants and
West Africa, I believe that some stray lions, probably, showed up in the
tropical forests every once in a while. After all, the savannah (their
natural abode) wasn't too far away.

Tigers, well..., I am miffed!

SteveK:

Na wa for yu o. That toxocology lab of yours is surely doing
something to you. So, there're no tigers in Africa? Please,
tell us, which Africa are you talking about?

Now, think about these Igbo words:
IGBO English
1. Agu Tiger
2. Odum Lion.

How come that our grandparents had words for tigers and lions
if there are no tigers in Africa? We want to know.

Steven Kueberuwa, what have you been sniffing these days?

Thanks and let peace reign in Nigeria and on Naijanet.

Kola,

Fox? I never knew there were foxes in Nigeria. Can anybody confirm this?
Please more definite answers than "I think ..." or "I heard ..." will be
appreciated.
