AMAJOR change of guard was effected Tuesday at the ECOMOG high command with
the appointment of the former Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to the late head
of state, Brig. General Gabriel Kpambe, as the new chief of staff to the
West African trouble-shooting military initiative (ECOMOG).
General Kpambe replaced Brigadier General Abdul-One Mohammed as the Nigerian
contingent commander of the force. General Mohammed was redeployed to
Kontagora, Niger State as the commandant, Nigerian Army Corp of Artillery
and School (NACAS).
The military authorities said the appointment is with immediate effect, even
though the Acting Director of Defence Information, Colonel Godwin Ugbo and
his counterpart in the Army, Lt. Col. Felix Chukwuma decline further comment
on the issue.
Also, Defence Headq-uarters sources confirmed the appointment of Major
General Oladayo Popoola as the new GOC 82 Division Enugu, replacing Major
General Felix Mujakperuo who was on Monday posted to the 2 Mechanised
Division Ibadan as the General Officer Commanding (GOC).
General Popoola was until his new appointment, the Chief of Logistics at the
army headquarters Lagos.
The source also revealed that Major General Ekpo Archibong, the erstwhile
Chief of Army Administration, was named as the replacement for General
Popoola as the Chief of Logistics.
On the new deployment list was the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Signals
and School (NASS), Major General Mishach Odaro, who was appointed the new
Chief of Administration (COA) Army Headquarters, while Brigadier General
Tanko Audu replaced him as the new commandant of the signal school.
The defence spokesman had on Monday told Defence correspondents that the
former president of the Special Military Tribunal (SMT), Major General
Victor Malu, has been redeployed to Lagos from 2nd Mechanised Division
Ibadan, as the commander of the Lagos Garrison Command (LGC).
He also confirmed the movement of the former LGC Commander, Major General
Bashir Magashi to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as the new commandant,
following the appointment of former Commandant, AVM Al-Amin Daggash as the
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
AVM Daggash is yet to assume duties at the military headquarters in Lagos.
Col. Ugbo said "he would report either today or tomorrow."
Also yet to assume duty is the new Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Rear Admiral
Jubril Ayinla, but sources at the naval headquarters in Lagos told our
reporter that he would assume duties today.
