14-JUN-98

PARIS (June 14) XINHUA - The Nigerian referee who awarded a penalty kick to
Roberto Baggio is set to be out of the World Cup finals as FIFA thought his
performance was unsatisfactory.

Lucien Bouchardeau ruled that Chilean defender Ronald Fuentes had deliberately
handled the ball when Baggio flicked it on to his hand.

Baggio converted the penalty kick and secured a vital point for Italy in the
match against Chile.

A senior member of the referees' committee confirmed:"Bouchardeau has been
given a severe dressing down by the FIFA adjudicators. No one can believe he
gave the penalty. I Would not expect him to referee any more games."

FIFA will give each referee at least one game and then assess their
performances individually before deciding who will referee the later stages of
the first round matches.

A FIFA spokesman said:"It's possible that the weaker referees may get to
referee one of the meaningless games in the later stages, but that's yet to be
decided. If we were unhappy with their performance then they won't referee
again."

Please correct: Lucien Bouchardeau is Nigerien ( from Niger )... but as one
of the best Nigerian Hausa singer sings, Niger and Nigeria are all the same.

Have Good day and Good Luke to G.Eagles.
