Bolaji,

Reading the news story posted by Femi Ojo (the one describing how
heavily armed policemen fled from ordinary snakes, dead chamelon, etc)
it is clear that there are serious allegations against Ganiyu Adams.
This includes the cold-blooded murder of a police officer. All over the
world when you murder a police officer, the rest of the Police
authorities come after you in full force.

We cannot also deny the fact that sections of OPC have been involved in
many atrocities over the past few years in the SW. The police thus have
a duty to bring charges and prosecute both the cultprits AND their
leaders. All what we should demand is a fair trial and no witch-hunt.
But the police should be supported in its fight against that murderous
section of the OPC.

Yes, the police have failed to contain the surge of armed robbery in
Lagos (and much of Nigeria), but this is NOT an excuse to fail to
prosecute any other arsonists and murderers.

One other little thing puzzles me in all of this. Recently, the Lagos
State governor (Tinubu) and I think the state parliament as well
publicly advocated the OFFICIAL use of OPC to fight crime in Lagos. How
could this have worked if sections of the OPC and the police are at
loggerheads? Or was the governor referring to only the Fasehun faction
of OPC? How could he have separated the two OPC groups on the ground? Is
it by which people carry snakes or use live tortoises as necklaces or
wear rings on their toes? This just shows that the whole idea was
bordering on lunacy.

Tony Kakhu:

1. Is it now unconstitutional in Nigeria to carry ordinary snakes
around, dead chameleon, wear live tortoises as necklace or wear a ring
on your toes? What kind of bias is this?

2. No one states that Ganiyu Adams should not be arrested. Fleeing from
the law does not mean that you are guilty of what you were alleged to
have committed, although by fleeing you have committed at least one
offence. There are serious allegations against him, including the
killing of a policeman. He should have his day in court, without
torture, and CERTAINLY without death in custody. The latter one - which
is a possibility, based on the serious allegation of police murder
against him and the recklessness of our Nigerian Police - would not be
pretty, if you know the OPC.

3. The security of Lagos (as I have conveyed to Tinubu directly and
others) and Nigeria in general NEED NOT TO TIED to ANY ethnic militia.
JUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. But the ethnic militia NEED NOT BE EXCLUDED
either, because they to are members of the community. They are not
ABOVE the law, but neither are they BENEATH the law. The only way to
exclude ethnic militia is to officially EXPAND the NP size and
efficiency, and/or engage non-ethnic militia STATE security operatives
running parallel with the NP. The only issue is one of separate
jurisdictions.

It is as simple as that.

PS: By the way, there is a psychological issue going on: the robbers
seem to fear the OPC more than the NP!

Bolaji:
Is that why Gani Adams and Co have (allegedly) been breaking into jails
and freeing suspected armed robbers? Stop the sophistry, please.
