Obasanjo heads FG committee on HIV/AIDS

MOVED by the urge to check the spread of HIV/AIDS virus in the country
the Federal government has set up an inter ministerial committee on HIV/
AIDS with President Olusegun Obasanjo as chairman.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Obong Ufot Ekatte who
announced this yesterday in Abuja also named vice president Atiku Abubakar
as vice chairman.

Obong Ekatte explained that the president was most concerned about the
growing spread of HIV/AIDS in the country."

He said the president has asked the presidency to be involved in the
control of the campaign against the spread of the disease for at least
two years.

His words "it requires a multi-dimension and multi-disciplinary approach
to put the disease under control."

He added that the setting up of the ministerial committee and the
programme working committee is with immediate effect.

Other members of the main committee include ministers of health,
education, Information and culture, women affairs and youth development,
defence and the secretary to the government of the federation.

Obong Ekatte also announced the setting up of a Programme Working
Committee which will coordinate the work and reports to the main
committee.

Committee is Professor (Mrs) Ibironke Akinsete.

Members include, Dr. Mohammed Sani Gwarzo, Dr. Lar. Dr. Jordan Lamajo
Bako, Dr. Udoh, Senator Abdul Rasaq Gwadabe and Mrs. Eulir-Ajayi.

Call for Papers for the Fifth Africa-USA International Conference on
Manufacturing Technology:

The fifth Africa-USA International Conference on Manufacturing Technology
will be held on July 10-14, 2000, at the Nicon Noga Hilton Hotel, Abuja,
the Capital of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Papers addressing various
aspects of manufacturing are welcomed. Deadline for abstract submission is
on January 15, 2000. Submitted abstracts will be reviewed and authors
notified of the decisions regarding the acceptability of their papers on
an ongoing basis. All abstract reviews and author notifications will be
completed few days after the deadline. The final manuscripts of accepted
abstracts are due on March 31, 2000. For complete details on the
