ABUJA, May 13 (Reuter) - The population of Nigeria is now about 104 million,
with men slightly outnumbering women, the population commission said on
Tuesday.

Commission chairman Chris Ugokwe said the final count in the 1991 census, the
last census of Africa's most populous nation, was 88,992,220.

``The annual population growth rate is 2.83 percent and the current
population of Nigeria by mid-1997 is about 104 million people,'' he added.

In 1991 there were 44.5 million men and 44.4 million women.
